Okay, how do these things work and did your guys use them? If they did, were they worth it?

I saw this on The Knot's checklist as something we should consider getting for FI but he's actually never heard of them either.

ETA: I just googled them..........is it true these suckers attach to the guy's SOCKS??!!! THAT can't be comfy!!!! Are these things necassary???

Yes, they attach to the guy''s socks. I can''t imagine them being comfortable at all. They aren''t really necessary if your guy just buys a shirt that''s long enough to stay tucked in.

Wow. This just sounds like a torture device rather than a helpful accesory! I can not imagine having straps going down what I can only assume the front or sides of my entire leg on both sides

Phew! One more thing to cross off the list :)

That''s funny! I''ve never heard of them either. I can''t imagine my FI using them but I didn''t see it on my Knot checklist or maybe I subconsciously ignored it!

Yeah, it''s under the "groom''s accessories" item. It also suggests normal things like cuff links and a pocket square.......but then this

Shirt stays are acutally these long flat pieces of plastic that insert into the ends of a collared shirt to keep the ends pointed down so that they dont lay flat on the shoulders. They are super cheap and my guy wears them every day! They really help a shirt keep a nice crisp look to the collar.

You can get them at Express for Men in the mall and probably any major department store in the men''s department.

They''re a smart invention and help you NOT need starch for collars!

yes, stays are for collars. they are usually plastic but you can get them in different metals as well. if you went the metal route, you could even have them engraved with something special like a quote, or favorite saying, or even your wedding date.

Wait, so they''re not suspender-type things that hook at the bottom of a shirt and the top of one''s socks? They are for collars????

Hmmm................very interesting new information. I''ll have to take another whirl around on google............

Thanx, shigidigi!!!!!

I bought FI a set for valentines in sterling silver with his name engraved on them. He wears them everyday - they are so much better than the horrible plastic ones that break really easily.

They are also known as collar straighteners. I got mine on the UK ebay site for about $40 including engraving.

We are talking about two different types of shirt stays.

One is a collar stay, which holds the form of the shirt collar.

The other is a shirt stay, which attaches to the bottom of the shirt, and the top of the socks to hold the shirt down. It prevents the bubble that can occur when the shirt untucks a bit.

I wear shirt stays everyday at work..and they I love them. When my shirt untucks a bit, it can look untidy.
They are not as painful as you might imagine, however, they are probably not necessary.

You can also get a waistband tape at sewing supply stores that has exposed rubber threads to keep shirts from slipping out. Not as secure as the reverse suspenders, I suspect, but probably a lot more comfortable. Somebody would have to baste it in place in several spots along the waistband (and then remove it, if the pants were rented!)

I really laughed when I saw your post. We have to wear these with our military uniforms and after about a week and a half you get really good at putting them on fast, especially with marine staff sgts yelling at you. They really arent bad once you get used to them. Just make sure if you decide to go that route that you get the right size for however tall he might be. They are not comfortable if you need them to stretch more than they are supposed to. However I''m not sure they would really be needed unless your guy plans on taking his jacket off. Good luck.

Hah, I flashed back to the Marines too. Not comfortable.

Wow, okay, so there are shirt and collar stays?? Geesh, I just never knew!

I have a feeling we''ll be going au naturel but if R decides he''d like his attire to remain where he puts it, then at least we''ll know what the heck we''re talking about!!
