Which do you guys think look better? I''m leaning towards a princess...

Here''s my take on this. You''ll probably get lots of votes for round studs because they are kind of the standard bearer of stud earrings. I wore 1/3 carat each round studs for years, first in yellow gold prongs and later I had them remounted in white gold bezels. For my birthday this year I wanted something different and I asked for princess cut studs. They are about 3/4 carats each set in platinum baskets. I love them! They are different than what you see most women wearing and still fit nicely on the earlobe. I have not had any problems with them rotating on my ear either. They stay put and look fabulous! My vote is princess, but you can''t go wrong either way.

I vote for round because of the light return which is superior to a princess...but really it''s more about what the shape is you like to see in your ear. If you want great light return then go with rounds but if you like a shape more, then princess would be better.

Have to be honest though, most princess earrings I have seen on people don''t look that sparkly or anything other than white squares on the head...so try to find a well-cut set that will throw some sparkles!

Yeah I see what you''re saying Sundial.
I''m liking the princess cut because it''s not something you normally see in earrings and I feel like the round cut is too old-fashion; although I''m a huge hypocrite since my e-ring is a round. :) But the round studs just don''t seem as nice to me as the princess studs, and a bonus is the princess cuts are slightly cheaper. :)

Mara is right though if you go with princess cuts make sure you see them and that they are sparkly. Mine only had GIA certs so I don't have all the cut info, but they catch the light every time I move! By the way my ering is round too, they don't need to match in my opinion.

one other comment re: old fashioned...

a few years ago my then-bf, now hubby, asked me about diamond earrings. i said i wanted bezel set rounds because they were all the rage.

he thought that was too trendy and got me regular 4 prong set rounds.

at the time i thought, well i really wanted bezels...but when a year or so later the bezel set kind of fell a bit by the wayside as a hot trend, i was really glad that he got me regular rounds.

so i wouldn''t think of rounds as old-fashioned but rather ...classic! i think both princess and rounds are more classic since they are the shapes you do see the most.

Have you gone to a jewelry store and tried one of each on at the same time? Cut is critical to maximizing the sparkle of either shape stone, but to help determine which look you like better, you need to see examples on your ears.

I like the idea of either one. I think princess cut studs are very interesting and I always like how they look when I see soemone wearing them. Rounds are also classic...you can''t go wrong with either; you just need to decide which cut/shape you like better.

If you''re leaning toward princess cut, then go for this shape!

For small ones, round would benicer because of the brighteness - from the polite viewing distance (not wispering in one's ear, that is), all that sows is a bright dot so it better be bright.

Larger would work nicely in a fancy shape because the distinct look will show better. Recently, someone had a pair of princess earrings made by Mark Morell. Quite lovely and different - if you find the style of your liking:

What "smaller" and "larger" means is a personal choice, of course. These earrings were just under half carat each.

THIS is their original thread, including some pictures showing the earrings in use...

Regardless, this is entirely your choice

I love the pictures Ana posted. I''d vote for round, though, because of their great light return. I wouldnt be afraid to consider well-cut I-J and even K colored stones in the SI or I1 range, since earrings usually dont get inspected very closely.

I still can''t decide! They are going to be on the smaller side - 1/2 carat each so I''m thinking perhaps I should get round? I don''t want to get princesses that are so small they look like little white rectangles on my lobes!
Valerie - those Mark Morrell earrings are gorgeous but I think for my first pair of diamond earrings I want to get regular studs and then hopefully I can add to that. :)
