So I have a vintage ring I call big blue. She is at the magical 5+ carat mark as is. Whomever had this stone cut originally was obviously to preserve weight retention. Her keel touches my finger! The best way to describe her cut is that of a Spanish Galleon. She is a quirky girl as her actual to the eye color in natural light is a deep teal, under artificial it's a full blue. My cell camera doesn't pick this up so I'll leave a Pantone card closest to the color I see.
I can't find my GIA papers so forgive the lack of some detail. I haven't been able to find it for six/seven years. I only remember that she's a little over 5 carats and has only 30% brilliance and was graded blue with a very slight gray modifier. I sadly cannot remember her actual dimensions. The diamonds in her mount are g/h VS of about 60+ points with a pretty heavy 18kt pink gold custom setting that looks cast/assembled to me. The only identifier is a K on the band. The GIA only designated it as 'modern'.
I don't wear her very often because the prongs of her setting barely holds her and this mount offers zero protection. It's also not really my style, but I appreciate it. This is clearer to see in the short videos. Also, you can read a newspaper through her.
I would like to reset her at some point using the diamonds from this setting and maybe recycling the gold because I really like the tone of the gold. Or, do I add prongs/bezel, close the back of the setting and rock the empire architectural vibe?
My main question is, should I recut this stone? Is it wiser to just live with her because she's a natural spinel at the 5 carat mark? Will I be 'ruining' her value to make her pretty and more dispersive? Could this ruin her color shifting?
The june 7th video is the ring with a piece of foil attached to close her setting in.
*sorry that all the pics are huge but my computer insists on formatting them this way.

I like how the stone looks with foil under it.

I understand your concerns about re-cutting the stone. I would send it to a qualified gem cutter and have them evaluate the spinel for a re-cut. Sometimes they can modify the cut a bit to allow better performance while still retaining most of the weight.

The stone does perform much better in the second video, however it still doesn't look that great. It does seem like there is a very nice color hiding in there, it sometimes pops out between the black circumference and the transparent center. :)

IMHO the 5+ct mark is only magical if a stone has great color. I would pay far more for a 4ct stone with terrific color than I would for a so so 5ct. I agree there's nothing to lose in getting the opinion of one of the gem re-cutters often recommended here.

 Yes, I agree as I can see her potential in the sparkling flashes of her peripheral faceting. It could be a very nice color.

If it bugs you, I’d look into a recut. I held on to a 5 ct pink sapph (big belly) for several years, debating a recut, but ultimately really loved it the way it was, and I love it even more now that it’s set. It sounds like the main reason you’re holding on to your stone as is is because of potential resale value, but what about the value of daily/regular enjoyment?

Reselling never occurred to me, I horde :))
I don't plan on ever selling her. It's more that I was under the impression that spinels weren't often found in larger sizes unless they were purples. Especially not blues. It was always more of a preserve the specimen thing. Though, because it's not that large I suppose in the end it doesn't matter.
Honestly, I felt guilty because I would rather have her cut/modified down to beautify her and set her in something more to my taste.

I believe you’ve answered your own question, then. :)

No guilt!!!

Please post pics if you go through with it. :)

Yeah, I think you're right
Now, who do I send to for cutting?!

Hi @Cockatiel I made a new thread for the blue. Everyone is saying recut!
Who would you suggest for a recut?
