Hi guys,

I was looking first at getting a 1.5 carat round but had originally set a budget of around 8000, saw I couldn''t get a G/H for that price. So I dropped down to a great stone but its size is 1.39 carat F with 7.3x7.37 dimensions so it looks like 1.5, but as I''ve been told before she might like the 1.5 lower quality stone over the better quality 1.39 stone. In order for me to do this I will have to go up another probably 1500-2000. Is it worth it? I really kind of want this to be her stone forever (or at least a long time). Thanks for your advice!

Hi Scaredof,

If the cut is great then you can definitely lower colour and clarity to get increased size, GIA or AGS graded G or H colour or even I and J can still be very white still and SI clarity grades can be perfectly fine if eyeclean. There wouldn't be much visual difference in size between the measurements/ weight you give and a well cut 1.5ct stone as they would give a similar look when set and worn but if you think your GF would rather have the larger size then consider that.

If you have any definite diamonds in mind go ahead and post the details or we could take a look for you and make some suggestions of diamonds you might like.

The 1.39 round diamond that I am talking about is GIA certified (2115023419) which I have a deposit on (total price is 7200). I actually asked for advice on this stone last week on here. I am just worried that''s all about the size because other jewelers have said that GFs usually prefer size over quality and she said 1.5 but also said not to spend too much, so I figured I found a great stone in the 1.39 in that it looks like 1.5 but is good quality and good price. I don''t have any 1.5 in mind but I know she doesn''t want the diamond to look yellow, so I have avoided I and J. Thanks for any help.

Here is the report check link for that diamond,

http://www2.gia.edu/reportcheck/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.showReportVerification&reportno=2115023419&weight=1.39

It has definite potential, it is around what is called a 60 60 type diamond, the proportions imply it could be a very bright and brilliant stone, but fire or coloured light could be reduced a little, this can be a trade off with these types of diamonds but no way to truly judge without seeing it.

Have you checked carefully to make sure the diamond is eyeclean? If you wished to keep looking you could definitely consider G or H colour if GIA or AGS graded but it depends on your preferences. The diamond above would give essentially the same ' look' as 1.5 carats when set in a ring so personally I don't think you would notice much visual difference especially when set between this stone and one of 1.5 cts.

If you are trying to hit the 7.5mm diameter, that is more like 1.6ct. That diameter of stone that you picked will look like essentially 1.5ct, "close enough" size-wise. I''d look at the clarity (how eye clean?), and the performance next.

It only has twining in the table that is not visible to the naked eye, so to me and from the jeweler it is eye clean. It sparkles too but I don''t have an eye for fire and coloured light especially to tell if it is reduced, any hints to telling? So you guys think that I should stick with this one and not go for 1.5 because it will look like 1.5?

Its hard to say....If you think your GF would rather have a 1.5ct because she values being able to say it is 1.5cts then go with that, if not then you can consider this one. Ask the jeweller if you can view the stone away from any bright store lights to see how it looks in lighting conditions similar to those it will be worn in. Especially see if you can view it in plain daylight to see how it looks and behaves then.

It sounds like she wants to tell people her diamond is 1.5cts.

I''m not sure where you''ve been getting your advice that girls like quantity over quality, but there have been many women who''ve posted saying they''re upset that their diamond isn''t as sparkily as they''d like it to be.

In your shoes, I''d get the 1.39 higher quality as it''ll look like a 1.5 when it sparkles like crazy AND it''s less expensive. Use the $2K you save and get her a fabulous pair of matching earrings.

I would ordinarily agree, but I think his gf also told him she would like a 1.5ct. Most likely she would and should be happy with this diamond, but if she said 1.5ct it is something worth considering.

no, not worth it, IMO.

Thanks guys, going back and forth between your posts is exactly how I keep going back and forth! I guess I''ve got some deep thinking to do.
