Glitterata''s stories of these rings are even more amazing. perhaps she would like to share them for those who haven''t heard?

Ooops, Kmom! Thanks for asking for my grandmothers'' stories! I didn''t see this before. I just noticed it as I was looking through at everybody''s byooooooootiful rings. I love them, love them, love them! They''re all so different and all so pretty.

The ring on the left was my maternal grandmother''s. When my then-boyfriend and I told my mother we''d decided to get married (no rings involved), my mother said, "Oh, that means you''re engaged--I''d better give you my mother''s engagement ring!" My maternal grandparents got married in 1929, just before the stock market crashed. My grandmother liked to tell the story of her wedding gown. She wore an apple-green, knee-length dress with a green crepe scarf that went across her collarbones and fluttered down her back, and a little green straw cloche hat. (She wore green because both my grandparents came from poor immigrant families--she wanted to be able to wear the dress again for other occasions.) As soon as they came back from their honeymoon, the stock market crashed and the hemlines fell. That tends to happen when stock prices fall, maybe as a way for clothing manufacturers to convince women to buy new dresses. If so, it didn''t work on Grandma--she cut the scarf off the top of the dress and sewed it around the bottom.

Actually, there''s another romantic part of the story. My grandmother was working as a schoolteacher when she and my grandfather fell in love. At the time, there was a law--or maybe just a policy--that if a woman teacher got married, she had to give up her job. But my grandparents were too much in love to wait for the school year to end, so they got married in secret. They had another, more public wedding after the year was over.

The other ring, the one on the right, has the diamond from my paternal grandparents'' engagement. They got married in 1921. Then for a significant anniversary--I''m not sure which one--my grandmother had the diamond from her engagement ring reset in a pinky ring for my grandfather. He died when I was 10. When I graduated from college, Grandma had the diamond reset as a necklace for me as a graduation present. But I rarely wear necklaces, so I had it set in a ring after I got married. I love that it''s a memento of both of them.

Here is my 1.53 H VS1 center stone ring.
