Show me your erings with a surprise diamond/gemstone

Hello All!

Lately I''ve decided I quite like the idea of a surprise stone in an ering. I''ve seen a few with a hidden sapphire or emerald. I love the color purple and was thinking about maybe designing one with a surprise purple tourmaline (I get the feeling purple diamonds are just a BIT out of my price range)

I saw an LM ring on his website with what looks like a sapphire underneath the cutlet. I would love to have something like that with a purple stone. The link to that ring is: http://www.artofplatinum.com/4images/details.php?image_id=68

What other purple options are there? I don''t know much about gemstones.. (expect my birthstone is Aquamarine, would it make more sense to hide one of those in a setting?)

Anyway, I''d love it if anyone could post pics of their rings with a suprise stone. I want to make sure this is something I REALLY like and not just a phase. I have a tendency to flip-flop on what I consider my "ideal ring."

I don''t have a ring with a surprise diamond, but I have tried on so many I may have pics I can post for you. Just a few comments though. Regarding, "I want to make sure this is something I REALLY like and not just a phase.", I know some people seem to like SDs and some don''t, but to me, they are so inconspicuous that I don''t think it would be something that would ever get on my nerves. I know exactly how you feel as far as, "I have a tendency to flip-flop on what I consider my "ideal ring." I am the same, and little things can get on my nerves. But I don''t think a SD is one of them. But another consideration is that once you pair it with a wedding ring, you might not see the surprise stone anyway ( meaning, it shouldn''t get on your nerves if you can''t see it?).

As for color, if you really like purple, then purple tourmaline could be really nice. However, if you are worried that you might decide you don''t like it down the road, a diamond would be safer - it seems to me - only because the color of the stone might be the thing I would ''change my mind'' about. Also, just my opinion, color-wise, aquamarine would be safer than a purple stone, because the light blue really complements the white diamonds. But that''s just an opinion of course. From a practical standpoint, I think aquamarines are relatively softer stones, so it might not hold up as well as diamond, with it being rubbed against by the wedding band etc... So you might want to consider, what wedding ring is this going to be up against? A light blue diamond would be fabulous! ( I toyed with that idea a while back), but I don''t know how expensive 2 tiny blue diamonds would be.

Ok, this is an awful picture, but I don''t have time to search. If you look up a PSer named "dockman" this is the beautiful ring he bought his girl. It has a SD.

Another Scott Kay - a five stone. Scott kay does a lot of the SDs. He even has a solitaire I saw recently, with a SD. It certainly seems prettier to see a SD at the bottom than all the metal where the prongs join up as on Tiffany-style rings. I don''t have a picture of it though.

This isn''t the greatest, but I noticed that this A Jaffe (on the right) has a much daintier SD than the Scott Kays usually do. I think the Scott Kay suprise diamonds are about 3 points or so, while this A Jaffe SD seemed 1 or 2 points, I think.

Now I feel stupid; I forgot to even click on the link to see the Leon. Is the SD under the diamond? If so, I can''t imagine getting tired of visually as you can''t even see it when wearing the ring. The only thing is, does it cause any color effect to the center stone? (not worded very well but hopefully you know what I mean) I was thinking Surprise Diamonds on the profile of the ring.

Thanks, dockman, and re-reading my post, I didn't mean to say the photo was awful ( I had saved it because I was interested in the transition from last diamond to prongs, and that was a good angle), but that it was an awful picture for portraying the SD, which she was looking for. Still love the ring, and I'm glad you showed her where to find pics. Yes, SK does seem to love SDs, and I think they are pretty.

Yeah I think she wanted the gemstone to be totally hidden, within the band. I know someone had one with a blue diamond just a few days ago but I forget who.

I imagine that having a colored stone directly under the diamond would cause the facets to pick up on the color and reflect it, but I think that would be COOL. I wonder how hard it would be to do that in a regular solitaire setting.

ETA: I didn't look at the Leon either! I just assumed it was a profile SD, not literally under the center stone. I've never seen of those before, but they look cool!

For another idea of surprise stones not visible at the top, there was a PSer named Cerahebra (I think ) who had rubies at the bottom of her shank - or something like that. It was made by Ocean Pearlman. That was kind of a neat way to have hidden stones (although visible at the bottom if I am remembering this right).

If it''s melee-sized, then it won''t cost you much at all - likely it will be included as part of the setting price like a regular diamond. Don''t just take my word for it (I could be way off, but when I looked at teensy yellow and blue ones, this applied), ask Leon or another jeweler and they can tell you for sure. I don''t know how hard it is to find purple diamonds, but it isn''t a color normally mentioned, so I think you may have a hard time finding one anyway. What about amethyst, alexandrite, or a tourmaline?

I have two surprise diamonds on the inside of the band of my promise ring. Even though you can''t see them, it''s still fun (for me anyway) to know that they''re there. I don''t have any current pictures of them, but if you''re interested in that idea, let me know and I can try and take some to show you!

I had always thought that was an open doughnut with some colored reflection showing through from the facets on the underside of the diamond (no colored stone in other words...)

However if you were to mount a stone like that under the culet of a diamond so that there was no metal between the gemstone and the diamond culet I do think the diamond would show a least a little bit of the gemstone color... cool idea... I have seen it before somewhere but cant remember the site.
