Oh JBK: the famous pear! How could I have forgotten?!! That indeed calls for a very special ammy!
I'm working on it! Possibly even with a little inadvertent help from you Minou! I hope to be finished after the holidays! <finally!>

I'm happy to advertently help too!

More on Jerry = Jerry Call, Inc. is in Grassy Creek, NC. I was in his shop this weekend and never had a worse case of tourmaline lust in my life. This is supposed to be the last year he teachs faceting. The shop has 4 Gem Master II faceting machines setup just off the showroom. If you are in the Little Switzerland/Spruce Pine area, you MUST stop in.

Sorry it has taken me so long, but I will try to reply to the request to explain the "blue flash" in most JXR amethysts...

Ok, so "blue flash" is something that is kind of a hallmark of a JXR...As you can see from the many photos in this thread and as well as the forum in general, there is usually a strong, dark, royal blue component of color in the JXR crystals/gems. Although this is more than likely the source of the "blue flash" phenomenon, the flash itself is not that dark royal blue. The "blue flash" is more of an electric, light blue when the crystal/gem is seen in direct sunlight or those true white flourescent lightbulbs.

Let's look at some pictures to give you a better idea of what I am talking about here...

Here's a random amethyst photo taken from eBay. This one is like most amethyst in that it has a fairly strong RED component. Because of this, when you see flash color coming out of the gem, it will appear pinkish-purple similar to what is shown here. Nothing wrong with this, but it is fairly common. Look around at eBay photos and you will see this type of color on, guessing here, probably 80-90% of amethysts.

Now, suppose a gem has a strong BLUE component. Another random eBay photo shown here that exhibits a stronger blue than the first stone. Notice how is is considerably more blue than the first one above. There is still a hint of red in here, but it is overshadowed by the blue component, thus making the color of light coming out of it more bluish than the first stone.

Finally, let's revisit FlyGirl's photo of her JXR oval stud earrings. When you get a strong blue component combining with strong direct lighting, the result looks kinda like this. It appears to me like an electric sky-blue flash as the gem scintilates or puts out fire (not sure of the technical term for what it's doing here, but it's similar to a diamond's fire). Beautiful stuff here and it's something special when you see it. Not all JXR's have this "blue flash", but most do, which only makes them that much more rare. Zambians can exhibit this flash as well.

Hope this helps more than it confuses anyone! Barret or George Ellis, you guys know more about this than I do. Please feel free to add on to what I said here or correct me if I have gotten something wrong.

We all know the market is abound with synthetic amethysts but have they come out with blue flash amethyst variety yet or are they just straight purple?

I have two JXR amethysts from TGT as well-- a 3.79 round and a 5.36 oval. I haven't set mine or taken any good pictures on my own. Here are Brad's pictures:

All good stuff...and, thanks Haywood for the description. I wanted everyone to know that its an actual lighter blue color that comes out of the stones, not just the bluer violet body color/royal blue that you were referring to.

Ive finally seen some nice blue flash coming out of my new stone, its pretty cool. It needs the right lighting though, as it will not come out in incandescent. The stone I got from Haywood is certainly a deeper color than my oval from brad, which is more of a medium color.

There certainly is a wide variation in color and saturation when you see them all posted. They almost look like different stone types.

OK - Now that I have the ring back from the vendor - I've finally got my own pics but I still can't capture how awesome this stone is IRL. AND I love the ring too!!!

JBK--your pictures are a lot better than the vendor's--at least of the amethyst's color!

Yeah, I cannot make out anything from the vendor's picture.

love the design.....the swirl effect really brings attention to the amythest....which deserves to be adored! :appl:
