9571AF34-7FA5-4F64-878A-E24AC4FF9CC3.jpeg just now I bought this Malaya garnet very impulsively. It’s a different colour than what most look like on google! I’d love to see yours! Do share pics unset and set if possible !

I love the colour. Mine aren’t peach ish but still feels like in parts it could look like yours

I love those light pinks! The malaya prices have drastically soared!

I also got one recently. 2.98 carats.

It’s so gorgeous !! Yeah the prices are through the roof but really really lovely colours. Your colour looks especially unique

Is the Mehenge garnet same as the Malaya?

Malaya.... Mahenge.... Umba.... Umbalite.... I think the descriptors are a little out of hand because all comes from the Umba Valley of Tanzania. This is confusing for a regular consumer! Add that the definitions seemed to be tied up with chemical composition. Lol.

If I recall correctly the first term in the trade for the peaches, salmons, champagne pinks and orangy pinks is Malaya... Then came the neon Mahenge spinels and I guess dealers rode with the success and came the term Mahenge garnets.... These shades are a mixture of pyrope-spess or almandine-pyrope-spess....

The Umbalites I see are usually fine rhodilites that are mostly pinkish purple or purple pinks.... And the Umba garnets are the orangy reds.

But location descriptors usually in other gems tell where the gems come from...Mogok rubies, Kashmir Sapphires, Luc Yen Spinels... So what will stop dealers from claiming any of which as Umba garnets and switching any of these stones? Would they be lying if the stone was mined at the location? As far as I currently see in the trade, the Malaya and/or Mahenge ranges from the salmon to the purples...

27967020-3E16-4809-9C5F-FBB1EFC2CE4C.jpeg I bought this pendant ages ago in a mineral shop (15 years maybe). I was told it was garnet. I took it to the Spruce Pine gem show last August. I asked a vendor who only sold garnets. I actually asked him if it was a spessartite or a hessonite. He said without question that it was Malaya. They are super sparkly IRL.

Cool color! Very nice!!

Not PS worthy stones but quite interesting to post for gem geeks. I purchased these as study stones so pardon the windows. It is quite difficult to look for a Malaya that is almost without color...but got 3 (one darker with a purple tinge) that are around 2 carats each. Also in the picture are light orange/champagne malayas to show how light the color of the bigger stones are. Photo is taken in late afternoon outdoor daylight and under LED lamp. The lighter stones color shift from very pale orange to very pale pink. Also, the 3 stones are cut rather flat for a garnet....so I checked JTV's Masasi Bordeaux garnets (JTV has the trademark to the name) who can have pale colors that may be similar...and surprisingly, the stones being currently sold are mostly below a carat.... So not sure if it's the shape of the usual rough of the specie that cannot make bigger cuts with good proportions.

Gasp! Is that one of JD's Mahenges? I had been looking at one on his website and noticed it was gone. Is it the 2 or 3ct-ish (I think?) one? I'm so excited to see what you think of it, if it is! I didn't need to be making any more purchases at the moment :)

Yes it is one of his! But it’s small- 5.7mm only. Just enough to make it a ring. I will post pictures when I receive it which should be today or tomorrow max

Hi ladies. I haven’t received it yet but I thought I should tell you....Something strange happened. I was a part of faceted gems auctions page on Facebook and Jeff got me banned!! He said I bid on some garnet rough and deleted that. And then he spoke to many dealers and they backed him decision to get me banned! It’s so strange I have bought so much from him and his son! They also acted like they are denying me the gateway to heaven or something. I’ve never had an experience like this and I was really upset so just wanted to share. I’m barely even looking forward to the garnet anymore :(

Im sorry that happened to you gemobsessed! I’m confused though. Did he ban you because you deleted the lot of rough or because you withdrew after you won? I’ve only bought once from his regular website, but was outbid the two times I bid on items on his Ebay site.

I’m saying he said that I bid and withdrew on the Facebook group. But I actually never did that. I didn’t even want garnet rough. And it was extremely unceremonious, the whole thing. No notice and when I asked both Jeff and the admin were very very rude. I’d attach the pics of the conversation but I am not sure what the PS policy on this sort of thing is.

That is perplexing. I can't imagine how upset you would be. I have never dealt with this vendor, I am sorry this happened to you.

That is so weird. You’d think customer service would offer you the benefit of the doubt. Heck, I don’t blame you about garnet rough. I can find it myself 45 minutes from my house!

Wow, so he says you bid on something that you didn't bid on? That is very weird. I'm sorry that happened to you. From the way you tell it, it seems very swift to ban someone without any ability on your part to defend yourself first! Hopefully the garnet is beautiful, I just love the color

Thank you all for your kind words :)

Yes i felt quite bad about it because I have bought many gems before from Jeff and his son and not just this garnet. I even told him when people plagiarised him on Instagram. And he didn’t consider that and he and his buddies just decided it’s cool to ban someone so unilaterally. Really the admin named Jim McCormick especially was so rude- he said he doesn’t have time to explain why he banned me and his decision is final. Seriously it’s just a auction group not some coveted club!

I genuinely think the fact that so many gem cutters are a bit of closed group may not be helping them!

What a horrible experence gemobsessed.

Could you make a new thread on this and explain clearly what happened just for our fyi?

Jeff has been nothing but delightful to me whenever I've spoken to him but even the neciest people can act lousy! I just want to know the full story.
