Looking at a new piece of silver jewelry (pendant) for my fiance.

I keep hearing about different types of silver (Argentium, etc.).

What is your preference when it comes to silver?

Post a picture of your favorite piece of silver jewelry and the type of silver it is!

Thanks in advance, everyone!

I like silver as it is an expensive option to WG, but it is a pain to clean. Even the Argentium tarnishes so I have pretty much sold off all my silver. The only pieces I have left are from Tiffanys and they have sentimental value to me.

I have lots of lovely silver jewellery which has been rather knocked off its perch in the last year or so by my WF and BGD DBTY and other high-end pieces.

However, I have been polishing up my silver pieces because I'd like to wear them again.

Getting some use out of the silver is also a good way of preserving my more valuable stuff from years and years of everyday use. (Of course I wear my rings everyday, but DBTY is more delicate.) I know silver isn't valuable like gold and plat, but it's still a precious metal. I also read somewhere - fun fact, correct me if I'm wrong - that sterling silver 925 is actually the whitest metal of all the white metals. When it's all polished up, of course.

My silver is all Tiffany and Links of London - oh, except I have a really nice silver necklace from Hot Diamonds and also a beautiful silver stars necklace from the fine jewellery department at Harrods in London.

I'm really glad you've started this thread! I'll be happy to post pix of my silver in the next few days.

In my local bar recently, my friend who works there looks particularly good in silver and she has a lot of it. We were discussing how, 10-15 years ago, everyone was so into the Tiffany chunky silver collections - the big heart necklaces and tag chokers, etc - and we were resolving to wear our pieces and bring that style back! I've got a beautiful 15-inch silver Tiffany choker with the heart instead of the oval tag, and it's not got a scratch on it. Such a pity that it just sits in the drawer and doesn't see the light of day. I'm going to bring it back!

I'm also going to dig up a few paragraphs from another thread about Tiffany silver.

Someone on a thread a while ago was saying that Tiffany's silver is downmarket, and as it happens I'd been reading a book all about Tiffany's silver tradition, so I wrote this. If you like silver, I just thought it might be of interest:

"It's true that Tiffany did expand their business so people who are not super-rich could own something from Tiffany. It's also true that there are some ghetto pieces in that silver collection. Like any store in the world, you have to apply taste.

Tiffany may have created things which cost less, but their quality did not falter. I think most people realise that the silver line of jewellery is a different business proposition from the gold and platinum jewellery. Even so, the silver is very well-made. I've got some really pretty silver Tiffany pieces and even the delicate ones are weighty, durable, and perfectly formed.

Tiffany has an unbeatable heritage. Tiffany's silversmiths made the Belmont Cup, the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl trophy, the Goelet Cup, and the Indianapolis Race Cup, and many more cups and trophies. What's remarkable about the Indianapolis Cup is its sheer size - about eight foot tall counting the tip, and very wide, too. There was also a silver bicycle commissioned once. I don't think any jeweller has created such breathtaking pieces out of sterling silver. Thanks to Tiffany, the world first took notice of an American contribution to the world of art and design when a Tiffany silver dinner service took the grand prize at the Paris Exposition of 1878. It took two hundred men two years to make, and almost 15,000 ounces of silver. And there were many more jaw-dropping works of silver, too, commissioned for all manner of state and private occasions and for the families of the great and good.

So I don't look down my nose at Tiffany silver. To wear it is to take part in a grand tradition from probably the best silversmithing heritage in the world."

Lol. Silver seems to get different reactions out of people. I tend towards colored stones, and I like custom items, so unless I wanted to complete about 1/2 as many projects, I set in silver.

All are silver custom projects. I have a bunch of Tiff silver too.

Freke - does that first ring have a thread somewhere? It is just gorgeous!

I like silver, it is very white and looks great against my pale hide. It is a terrible bother to keep untarnished though. :nono:

Freke, I think you need to check the prongs on your rings. I can't tell for sure about that beautiful topaz, but that green one is definitely in trouble.
I recently got a huge fright looking at my tanz pendant with a loupe, one claw was completely off the stone, and it only has three claws!

Great pieces, Freke!

I have a lot of silver cab rings from this guy:

http://robertsilversmith.com/

I wear an 18k red gold chain with a silver sand dollar pendant 24/7.

I wear a silver ring and an 18k Italian gold ring on my right hand.

I love silver. good silver. one day i'll have to take some pictures and post them.

I wear certain pieces enough that they develop a patina but do not tarnish. the others I store properly and they do not tarnish either.

the short version: I love silver!

Here is my silver pendant. I really love it! Its a bgd stone (even though you cant tell it from the pic).

I use the tin foil/baking soda method to clean it and it always comes out looking like new.

In other news, I just requested a quote on a silver ring with a gold bezel and a little bit of gold detailing on the shank...the
quote was $680 which I thought was pretty high for a silver ring (or maybe I'm just cheap). Its for a 5mm stone. Does anyone
think thats high? Its for this setting...I wanted the inner bezel in gold and the outter circle bezel to be in silver. I also wanted
the beads on the shank to be in gold. I've seen other all gold settings that are about the same price (as this mostly silver ring).
Maybe thats just the price for custom work?

Edit - btw...my pendant was made by Patrick Irla (have to give him credit)

Freke, your rings are amazing!

Tyty - very pretty necklace and ring! I agree that $680 is high.

Hi Movie zombie, what's a cab ring? Cabochon? If yes, what are the stones?

I don't think I ever made one. It's my push present/birthstone ring from BabyFreke. I have a couple pictures in this thread.

It's Argentium silver, the stone is an electric blue topaz Victoria elongated cushion cut from Barry Bridgestock, over 8 carats.

I am muy jealous of your collection.
