Side baguettes and halo-ed center-stone?

Well...with my "Alexander terrible, horrible, no good, very bad" drawing skills, I tried to draw kind of what I have in mind and wonder what everyone thinks about this idea. Is it doable?

My design2.jpg

The center stone is oval but it would have an octogon halo all around it filled with thin baguette sticks instead of brilliant rounds. Maybe interspersed with a few brilliant rounds here and there.
More tapered baguettes on the shoulder and a cinch in mid shank. (Did I mention I love baguettes?).

(Note the difference from the Di/Kate ring top to the right. I want to avoid that look).

The center stone would be the 2.52 blue sapphire I posted above (9.2 x 7.2) so I am not sure how large it would face. But that's kind of what I have in mind.
Blue stone in a hall of mirrors.

The sharper octogon lines in baguettes should bring a bit of modern/sleek touch to a ring that could otherwise come across as a bit too traditional, frilly or common.

I am open to any warnings, criticisms or suggestions for additions.

I also need some opinions about gold vs. platinum. I like white gold but have heard that "serious" jewelers are reluctant to use it. They prefer either yellow or platinum. I did not even know that until I visited Leon Mege's site and another one similar.
Since I love my rings to feel very hefty - I would love platinum, especially now when the price is pretty much the same as gold.
I will just have to check with my jeweler to see if he works in platinum too.

Thank you all so much for your help!

Only art of platinum is reluctant to use white gold. Other jewelers prefer to work with gold than platinum. Get whatever YOU like. Find a jeweler who can give you what you want. It "may" be possible to modify a stock setting if you find the right situation.

I'd be curious as to what THEIR motivation is.
I's nice to make an informed decision.

For white I would prefer platinum due to the weighty, hefty feel - but until recently platinum was too expensive. Looks like it is now about as much as gold.

.

Pt is stiffer than gold, so better if you want strong forms with less volume than possible for gold; but ... metallurgy makes substantial difference.

I'd ask if this metal choice makes any difference, for a given design ... if it weren't such a tricky question to answer !

Digressing,
I have been playing with silver throughout the holydays - its properties are somewhere inbetween - stronger in most ways than gold, but not as much as Pt. (I love that black patina on whitest than white metal !)

I would go with what your jeweler is confident working with. IHMO this makes more of a difference than anything about the metals ...

I think I understand what the left drawing means & love it.

Good luck !
