simple but not boring solitaires?

Hi,

I am proposing to my girlfriend soon with a family diamond. I don't really know all the details on it except that it's a classic 1 carat round brilliant. I'm getting it appraised soon. It was in an earring of my grandmother's, so I need to get an engagement setting for it.

After consulting with my girlfriend, I know she want a very simple but not boring solitaire, possibly with diamond accents. We looked around some of the sites on here, and it seems like she likes stuff like the White Flash Vatche Swan and the White Flash Santorini Engagement Ring. Basically, things that look like elegant solitaires but have some special touches.

After figuring out what she likes, she wants me to surprise her with the ultimate outcome.

What other styles should I look at? Based on White Flash, it seems as though this is achievable for $2,000 or less, so that is my budget, more or less. Preferably less.

What are your favorites that meet this description?

Great suggestions! These are definitely along the lines of what I am looking for.

Two things I know I don't like: halos and when the prong basket park looks like it was separately made and stuck onto the ring part. Sometimes this is described as a cathedral setting, but then I see cathedral settings that aren't bad.

(I would avoid the Vatche Swan and Sisley if she plans on wearing a wedding band because the wedding band will rub against the area that sticks out at the base of the head and cause it to scratch or wear away over time.)

Don't forget you can always get exactly what you want custom made. It will take a bit longer, but if you are looking for something special and unique then it is really the only way to go.

Ditto! It's gorgeous! I love the low-set head and the slightly tapered shank.

4squaremeals--I just had a simple but not boring solitaire made, and I wanted to echo the idea that you could always have something custom made to fit your vision. I came up with a design (in which I merged elements from a lot of other PSers' rings) and the my jeweler made the setting that I wanted. It was really fun to go custom, and it's quite shocking to see an actual ring made exactly as I wished!

If you scroll through to the last of the pictures on the first page you'll see the drawing I came up with for the ring. I think it's so cool that someone took that drawing and turned it into an actual piece. I really wanted the ring to look like a simple solitaire from the top, but to have all that whimsy when viewed from the side. Simple, but special.

Wow! This setting is so elegant and romantic. My bf would love this since it shows off the cutlet! Very nice- be sure to post it once it's done!
