Simple Solitaire or Ornate?

I've seen so many beautiful rings here! Some are simple solitaries and some are quite ornate. They all make me wish I had one just like it.

Is your favorite ring (or the ring you wear most often) a simple solitaire or is it fancy and ornate?

What about it makes it your favorite or the one you like to wear most?

I'd love to see a picture of your favorite too.

I find it interesting that I came here with an idea of what I might like in a ring, but now find it changing a bit. Or I should say, I still want a ring like I was imagining and other rings like ones I've seen here.

My preference are more on the simple side, and my e-ring reflects that. It's actually the same as FrekeChild's stormy spinel 3 stone ring (that I asked DanielM to copy hahaha), but with a blue sapphire center stone and pink tourmalines for the side stones. I don't have any pictures yet since it still in the making but I just can't wait till I get my hands on it

I agree that there are so many beautiful rings here While I personally wouldn't wear something big and fancy all the time, I sure love looking at them! There are so many rings here with superb coloured gems and the workmanship of some of the fancier rings are to die for I would however wear them as a RHR occasionally if they were actually mine

My favorite 2 rings are simple solitaires and I will tell you why.
I LOVE the stones !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can see virtually all sides of the stone, table, girdle, pavillion, culet.
I can admire each stone in varying light.
One is soooooo well cut.
One has the most gorgeous color, to me.

However, ask me again when I get my next project.....
It is going to be the most "ornate" ring I will have thus far....

I prefer ornate settings, I dont have any to share though...I have a pink tourmaline, but I have not had it set yet....I dont have the funds as gold is quite expensive right now.

Has to be ornate for me. Simple rings are okay if the stone is huge or if an ornate setting would detract the eye from the stone rather than compliment it.

I like having a "wardrobe" of rings so I can match the ring I wear to my mood, clothing, time of day or activity. Sometimes I like ornate, or artsy, sometimes I like simple or classic. It's good to have choices!

While I do have several more-ornate settings that I love, most of my favorite rings are 7mm+ stones in solitaire settings. For me personally, solitaires are most complementary to my lifestyle and to my personal sense of fashion and dress -- but sometimes I have a loose gemstone that just cries out for something more elaborate. I take a lot of pleasure in figuring out the "right" home for each stone - and for me this means thinking about aesthetics, practicality, and economics - and every time I wear or look at "my" creations I get a jolt of happiness and satisfaction. Have fun figuring out what you prefer!

The ring I wear most often (every day) is my engagement ring and it's in a plain cathedral setting. For my other rings it varies depending on my mood; I like both simple and ornate settings.

I wear what I like. Dosen't necessarily have to match the outfit, just my mood. When I'm traveling for work I only wear my wedding ring and rings without stones because its just easier to travel this way.

I prefer simpler rings. I usually wear my spinel ring (barion emerald cut with baguette sides), a loliondo spess in a pave band, a blue green tourmaline in a silver dome setting or tension set tourmaline. In other words, clean and simple.

I have a preferance for solitaires but I love ornate settings... so I will likely alternate betweent the two. Final answer=both!

Thanks for all the replies. I love hearing what people prefer. I do believe I will need to own a few rings of both kinds in order to decide what my personal preferences are.

It's funny how simple replies can keep me on google or searching this forum for a bit. Words like "loliondo spess," "silver dome setting," and "tension set" kind of go right over my head. But I will know and speak the lingo soon!

I am so sorry about that!I didn't mean to be pedantic.

Loliondo is a mining town that produced some fantastically colored orange spessertite garnets. They were rarely clean, though.

A dome setting is like a wider band that is curved off the finger.

And a tension setting is a setting where the stone is held in place only by the pressure of the band, without prongs or bezel.

Well, I thought I only like ornate, blingy rings until I had my three stone spinel ring made, and I really enjoy that ring. While I do often think, "hmmmm, wonder what it would be like with diamonds", I think the stones are the true stars of that ring, and the fact it doesn't have diamonds doesn't ruin it's entertainment value for me.

Here's another strange thing to think about: Sometimes what I consider ornate is simple to others, and what I consider simple is ornate to others.

I only own two rings and both are what I would call a cross between the two.

My e-ring (avatar) and an antique OEC 3-stone that I wear on my right hand. It's set in yellow gold with an ornate gallery but otherwise very simple.

I like both very sleek modern settings and blingy pave - my husband is more of a blingy pave fan (he has Tiffany spectacles with crystals on the sides) despite being a very conservative 'city' type!

I took these photos today, and I think it's apparent why this is one of my favorite rings, not to mention, that it doesn't need the bling I usually love. The center is four carats and the sides are 1.1 carats. I think I figured out how to save my photos so that PS doesn't kill the color!! Yay!!! This was taken in my car as the sun was setting.

Here are two of my more blingy rings that I also wear alot, but they also don't take up as much finger real estate as the top three stone. They are 1.7 (trilion) and 2.2 carats (cushion) each. Both are spinels as well as the top three stone.

I have many (16?) simple erings. I tend to wear ornate rings on my right hand. Take my Beverly K halo for instance...

I tend towards simple, more organic and delicate designs. Although as time goes on I've gotten into more ornate settings. I guess a girl can only have so many solitaires before wanting something a little different!

I ended up going with a super simple solitaire and I'm glad I did. It's very wearable for my (rather casual) day-to-day life.

If I had a different lifestyle, say having to dress formally for work for instance, that might have influenced my decision. But I feel like I made the right choice.
