Would you rather have a high end quality diamond that may be on the small side, or a diamond that's bigger but has more flaws?

Yes= close to flawless but smaller.

ps:sorry, I'm not off to a good start here

I vote for size over quality, hee hee.

Sure, ideally I would love to have a few carats of pure, unadulterated diamond, but realistically it''s just not possible due to my lifestyle and our income. I also am 5''10" and feel that anything smaller than 1 ct. would''ve looked really tiny on my size 6.75 finger. It''s a very personal issue, and I have completely superficial reasons for wanting size over clarity/cut, etc. Just my opinion!

Btw, I have a 1.5 RB J SI1, for the sake of um, whoever cares.

There are so many shades of grey here I can't even sum up the question, much less answer.

Would I pay for a D, IF, Ideal Cut -- Heck to the no!
Would I want a honkin' K, I2, fisheye. Also - NO!
Would I rather have a 1ct D IF or a 1.5 ct H Vs2 ... H please.

When you say high quality, I am assuming you mean a well cut diamond. I''d rather have a well cut diamond over a larger not so well cut diamond any day. Larger isn''t always better, in my book anyway.

Deco, I agree. If I could have a nice D flawless but not as large, or a nice E/F/G and VVS1 or VVS2 that was substantially larger, I would likely take the larger...would depend on the stone though...I went from E VVS1 to G VS1 and I am happy because even though the E was a nice size, I got the size I want AND nice quality too...

I''m a quality kind of gal. I would rather have smaller and better than bigger and included. Bigger isn''t always better.

My DH and I went back and forth on this same topic! I really wanted a bigger center

He wanted flawless diamonds...well, we ended up meeting half way. But, I wish I would have shown him all these great G and H diamonds on here!

Maybe I could have gotten a bigger center stone.

Okay, I am going to go against all my Pricescope Better Judgement...and say Size is the more important feature TO ME. PLEASE, NO ONE ON THIS BOARD HATE ME!

However, it really depends on what would be "sacrifcing quality" for size. Would I get a 2ct K I2 overr a 1 ct F VS ? No, but I would pick a 2ct I SI1 over a 1.5 D-F VS-

This is just my opinion. It would also depend on the setting, grade report, ect.

If I had the choice of a 3ct SI2(eye clean) H or a 1ct Flawless D and BOTH were excellent cuts...Hands down the 3ct would win me over.

I think I would take quality over size. I really don''t care for diamonds over the 1 ct range...I know got to be nuts. I also like to know it is real and not look like a piece of glass...I know I am nuts again. I don''t want it to be yellow or included but I like to know it is real! Have I made any since?Higher on the color and SI on clarity.

Another vote for quality over size. I''ve seen small stones of good quality make poor quality big stones disappear.

Ok some thoughts here

Quality is a preference. To me quality is large with a great cut, if eyeclean even with a low clarity and low colour ( I like the capes) that is still quality to me, or my preference. I would never want the smaller D IF. Quality is solely the opinion of the purchaser. However this is a good thing as it means there is a diamond for everyone.

I think this poll could have been more narrowly defined to make it more meaningful. Not many people will ever consider (or even see, for that matter) a D IF.

I think the more realistic choice would be, would you prefer a E-F VS or VVS that is around 1.0-1.5 or would you rather have a I-J SI 1 or 2, 1.75ct. or above (all ideal cut)? Then some of us will choose the middle ground of G-H VS or SI1. I really don''t want a diamond over 1.5 cts., so it allows me to go a little higher in color and clarity. I''d honestly rather have the E-F VVS, but I''m not really willing to pay for it.

Quality over size but I would buy it from a dealer who has a lifetime and fair trade up policy

I agree with Deco. My EC is an "I". That was our compromise. It still looks nice and white and is a VS1. Very few people can afford a colorless, flawless diamond so everyone has to compromise somehow.

Me too! I think certain cuts over a certain carat range can look like glass (i.e. some of those insanely huge 6 carat e-rings all the stars seem to have.) I like my diamonds to sparkle. That being said, I say quality over quantity because IMHO a well-cut eye clean diamond can appear bigger because of its sparkle and fire. That''s just me though, probably because I know I may never get over the .50 carat that''s waiting for me.

I''ll just add that Tacori''s emerald cut is VERY white and beautiful! I imagine I color will vary as it can be closer to H or J. I do think the clarity in an emerald cut may be even more important than in a round. Her VS1 looks totally clean!

Quality over size please. Inclusions bother the heck out of me, so the cleaner the better. Plus, I''m color sensitive, so it quality is a must!

Ah, thanks Janis. Step cuts are not as forgiving (with color or flaws) than RB. But I do think this is a loaded question. Most people have to figure out what is most important to them (after cut) and look at diamonds with those specs. Very few people can have EVERYTHING they want.

Eye clean, is what''s important to me. I would go bigger any day as long as it was a well cut, bright stone and eye clean.
36.gif

quality over size is my vote. Inclusions bother me and eye clean may not be mind clean for me. I don''t know if I could go below si1 and actually would feel more comfortable with vs2 (although it would depend on the diamond).
I am much more tolerant of color than clarity.
That said, a well cut sparkly small diamond outshines a bigger poorly cut large diamond anyday.
Size is the least important of all my criteria.
