Hi all,

I was wondering where I could find a nice pair of blue sapphire studs (heated is okay but no BE diffusion) for a gift for my sister for her master's graduation, she likes blue a lot. My budget is about $60 / 45 Euros. I have already found one pair from an approved vendor in that range and another from an Etsy vendor who looks fairly legitimate. They are very small but they are genuine, but wondered what my other choices might be for this or if anyone could find anything else before I pulled the trigger. Blue topaz or blue spinel is another option I'd be willing to go with but I think she would prefer a darker color such as spinel or sapphire as opposed to topaz. I was thinking simple setting in silver, probably, for cost's sake so that the money can go into the stones instead, such as bezel or 4-prong.

Thanks for your help!

EDIT: Kyanite might also be acceptable, but I don't know anything about that gem. Can someone enlighten me?
EDIT: I forgot this until just now, but she also does like moonstone and has a moonstone necklace already that she could have earrings to go with, so moonstone studs are one more option, as long as they have a little of that blue to them.

Blue topaz might be a good option is you want a larger size stone and want to stay in your budget.

Thanks for the replies! Chrono, those are a little more than I wanted to spend. I found several options though not all are sapphire. A very well cut blue topaz actually, or some nice kyanites. Could someone tell me more about this? I will post some pics when not using my iPod touch. :) the ones I have found are already set so there will be no setting fees.

Edit: it is an approved vendor but I am not saying who yet for lurker purposes.

Blue topaz are inexpensive but pretty because they have been irradiated in a nuclear reactor. But not to worry, they are safe to wear.

It is nuked but it's meant to be safe by the time it reaches us. Kyanite is very pretty but easily damaged. But if you baby them it could be fine. How about blue tourmaline? I saw some on Ebay already set.

With that budget I would certainly consider Be treated Sapphires, will not fade, much tougher than Kyanite and never irradiated like Topaz. For untreated however, Kyanite. Best regards, Lee

Don't forget..there are different colors of Blue Topaz. Blue Topaz comes in Sky Blue (like Aquamarine), Swiss Blue (Like Blue Zircon), and London Blue (like Blue Spinel). So maybe search for "London Blue Topaz" and see if you like that color. As noted, Blue Topaz has been irradiated for color, but its durable, fairly brilliant, and inexpensive.

Kyanite can be a vivid Blue, like a top Kashmir Sapphire, and is untouched as far as saturation for the dollar. If you find some Kyanite that has no zoning and good cutting (a lot of Kyanite is poorly cut, and has bands of color/white called Zoning) thats a great choice if she likes the silky/velvety looking Kashmir blue Sapphire color. Kyanite, as noted, is fairly soft...but earrings don't really get banged around much. If they survive the setting process, you should be good to go. Not a very brilliant stone, it is all about the rich color.

If you can find blue Tourmaline, thats a good choice, and that color can go anywhere from light blue to deep greyish-blue. Blue Tourmaline is usually referred to as "Indicolite" if you are searching.

Blue Zircon is a great choice for earrings too...as its very brilliant and very dispersive. Its not super durable but great for earrings, its harder than Kyanite, too. Blue Spinel can be found in smaller sizes but in the lower prices it will probably look greyish-blue.

Hope this helps, good luck!! Search "London Blue Topaz", "Indicolite", and "Blue Zircon" and see what you like, with "Kyanite" being another (albeit softer) option.

Good idea. Blue zircon would be really nice and sparkly.

Thank you! Again I am on my touch so it is hard to post pics. But thank you for all the help. The kyanites are IMO the most beautiful for the money but I think I will send my sister pictures of the best ones and let her pick for color variations etc. she likes blue topaz (I do know it is treated. I asked her about this so that she would be sure to like them. In the running are the kyanites, a pair of London blue topaz, regular blue topaz, and a few pairs of Montana sapphires. I found one pair that had a very nice color and not too pale. They I think are about 75$ but that is not too much over the budget so that would be ok. I'm not sure which she would like the most. They are from an Approved vendor and all are set in silver four prong settings.

Edit: she told me she would prefer something blue to moonstones so those are out. Thank you though!

You seem to have narrowed it down ( or close to it ). Yes, please post pics when you get a chance!

Here are photos of some choices in that range. What is nicest in your opinon?

alright, it is not letting me upload anymore. I have about three more. Grr.

Ooh, I really like the London Blue Topaz, but then, I am a bit obsessed with those stones, regardless of the treatment they go thru. How big are those?

It could either be the file name (keep it short and simple, no underscore or slashes) or the file size (keep it under 500KB). I'm heavily biased against blue topaz so that's an automatic out for me.

I'm not personally against blue topaz, but it's not my absolute favorite. She likes it though. I will try to upload the others. There are also a pair of green sapphires that are really cool.

Tiny sapphires (3mm). Heated, but no BE. Look like a decent cut to me, and good color.

Green sapphires personally I really like these.

Kyanite cabs. I think this color is gorgeous and they would be safer in this semi-bezel setting, right?

Swiss blue topaz, these are the least expensive but also IMO the most "generic."

The kyanites are gorgeous! As cabochons and earrings, you are perfectly fine to wear them as they are, even if prong set but yes, bezels are fine. Definitely my top pick, followed by the green sapphires.

I agree with you, Chrono! I sent them to her to pick out which she likes the most, but I have a hunch those will be her top two picks as well. They are definitely mine! They appear to be good quality for the money, correct? I know these are all not top-quality, but I am asking about quality for price. Thanks! Edit: I do see some color zoning in the kyanite cab on the right, but I like the color and guess it would not be too noticeable?

Yes, good quality for the price paid. I wouldn't sweat the banding seen in the right kyanite. It's not terribly obvious and anyone who gets that close to her had better be someone she knows super well in the first place. :naughty:

hahaha, yeah, true. :twirl:

And just out of curiosity, what is the quality on the sapphires, the dark blue ones? I am just curious. I am trying to get better at judging sapphires as I eventually want to buy one. Are these a bit dark to be desireable in general opinion?

They don't look lively at that distance - a bit dull. Cannot tell much about the colour (too far away) but it's not too shabby.

Thanks! I had also wondered about the dullness.

They are too far away to tell but it could be the clarity and / or the cut.

Thanks for the help everyone! Much to my surprise, she chose the London blue topaz. I really thought she would choose the kyanite-but she didn't like the setting. Good thing I didn't pick those for her! Maybe I will buy a pair of those myself!
