Hello everyone,
I currently have a small .6 ACA in a plain solitaire setting and have decided on a halo reset. I could possibly upgrade the center stone to a .8ct center but I am unsure of the visual difference it would make in a halo setting. Any thoughts? Thanks

I think it would be plenty worth it if you do not plan to upgrade again soon.

Going from .6 to .8 halo will be an enormous difference.

I think so too.

0.6c is about 5.4mm, 0.8c is about 6.0mm. So it is going to be visible. Weight to diameter relationship is roughly cube root, so for smaller weight, for a same weight change will result in a more significant diameter change than a larger weight.

The PS rough guide is if you get 10% more surface area, it's worth doing. You'd be getting 23%, just the center diamond alone. Based on RBs, not princess:
5.4mm diameter for .6ct
6mm for .8ct

I would go for the increase before you halo. I think you will see a slight difference!

Not wanting to threadjack, but this thread reminded me of something I''ve been wanting to ask:

What is the visual difference between RBs that are 1ct and ~1.2 ct?

Is there a chart somewhere that compares the ct weight to mm size across the diamond. I know it''ll depend on the cut but is there a rough guide?

I would absolutely do it. .80 is a nice size!

Oh, It is a tough one! but thanks for all the input. Budget wise, I could do the increase and get an inexpensive halo setting. Or I could keep the .6 stone and get a great setting. Ugh! decisions

but, I know I want a halo....

If you want a halo, go for it. Have you compared size difference in person? I''ve been looking around at stones comparing my .41 to .62-.71 and there is a very visable size difference!

yep, it will be very noticeable!

There is a big difference in size going up by half a mm at that carat weight. If you plan to upgrade in the future, I would make sure to do it before you get a halo so you don''t waste a setting.

ok, here is a .74 compared to a .61.

That''s a difference I would notice! If it''s what you want, go for it.

If you''re set on the halo, i''d put the money towards a good one if it''s for every day wear. You want something with good craftsmanship to keep the pave from falling out.

I feel that the difference would be noticeable too. But maybe not so noticeable to others?
I hate being so indecisive. My setting options would be the Vatche Grace with the .60ct center stone or this one from I.D Jewelery.

This second option is substantially less money but has a different feel then the Grace.
I wonder if the Grace setting could accommodate a 5.5mm stone now and a 6mm stone later? This would be ideal.
How would the Grace setting look with a smaller stone? Any thoughts?

oops here is the other setting

Big BIg ditto to this. Grace by vatche all the way.

I don''t think there is much point is getting a larger diamond later to put into a halo designed for a smaller diamond. The outline of the ring would be identical so it would look the same. I didn''t realize you were going with a prong set halo. In that situation I am not sure the size difference would be noticable.

Good point :)

I am wondering what the Grace would look like with a smaller stone. I have seen it set with a .8 & a 1.25 and both look great but a smaller center might mess with the proportions.

It will be a noticable difference solitaire wise but question is will it be once you put it in a halo... Personally, I''d go for a nicer setting bc either way once you halo the baby it going to be huge. Thats just me tho....

They surely make the ring to fit the proportions? The .6 is not *that* much smaller, I suspect it will look like the amazing .8 the other PSer owns.

Thanks everyone! I have decided to go with the Grace

I am very excited and hopefully I made the right decision.

This thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/engaged.78991/ has a .8ct in a Princess Grace. I'd have gone for the larger stone first, and the IDJ halo, if that's what fit the budget. My original e-ring was 5.9mm and I also tried someting around .6ct and liked hte additional size. A well cut .8ct looks like 1ct to lots of people due their being so many steep/deep 1cts or "light" 1ct (like .9ct) out there.
But, me, I always put the bucks into the center stone and cut costs on the mounting. I'd probably never pay for a designer mounting. Fashions change. People sell used mountings. Competitors and good bench jewelers copy then for less.

Vache might be able to make that a little oversized to accommodate a .8ct later. Pinch it up a little for the .6ct now. I don't know. Possibly, the mold is the same in that diameter range. You'd have to inquire. Last time I explored Vatche, the buyer's diamond was sent to Vatche to be set.

Thanks HVVS but I have already placed my order for the Grace and believe me I have thought this one over for about a year. I would love to have a slightly larger diamond but I think I love this setting more. Unfortunately I can't have both. Hopefully I made the right decision

In the future (hopefully years from now!) I may decide to upgrade my diamond and then I will have a beautiful setting for a sapphire or ruby

It is one of my favourite settings. I really think that because you planned to halo it, the money spent on the extra .3mm would have been lost in the overall finger presence of the ring. You MUST come back with handshots ok?? I still think about this setting sometimes for my own 1.2ct.

Thanks Dreamer! I will definitely post some pics in about two weeks if all goes as planned

My heart has been set on the Vatche Grace for well over a year hopefully you are right about the finger coverage aspect
