So, how much *have* diamond/metals prices risen?

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new here, and again and again I see posts about how the price of diamonds/gold/plat have skyrocketed recently. Can anyone shed some light on exactly how much? Like, if I could rewind, say, to 2010, how much would I have spent for my new studs, or the sidestone pair I'm putting in my new 3-stone... or the 18k setting itself? Just curious... and a bit masochistic, I guess. :)

At the top of this screen click on Resources, then select Diamond Prices.

I have spent 3900 on 1 carat j vs2 AVC in 2010
Now 1 carat L vs2 AVC is 4800
so i think the J would be around 5500 or so
a difference of 1400
The ounce of gold in 2010 when i bought my diamond was 1200$/ounce, for my diamond i could of bought 3900/1200=3.25 ounces of gold
Now the spot price is 1660$/ounce so for the price of the diamond similar to mine you can buy 5500/1660=3.31 ounces of gold
So in reality i have paid in 2010 about the same in gold as what you will pay now even if my price seems a lot cheaper!
It is more obvious in less than 1 carat diamonds that did not change in price much. The loss of mine is more.
In 2010 i bought also 0.61 g vs2 ideal hearts and arrows for earrings cost me then 1957$, 1957/1200=1.6 ounce of gold
The second diamond was 0.61 F VS2 ideal hearts and arrows cost me then 2320, 2320/1200=1.9 ounce of gold
Similar diamonds now are a tad more.
I will round the current price for the same specs to 2200, 2200/1660=1.3
I have paid much more then than what you will pay now for under carat diamonds!

Thanks very much, both of you!

 Holy guacamole! Wow... it really would have been good to start this new hobby of mine a couplefew years sooner, eh?

Although, if I am reading everything correctly, it hasn't been as crazy in the world of sub-1ct diamonds, so I have been comparatively lucky (having only been in the market for studs and sidestones).

I feel terrible for young people just starting out- everything seems so much harder than it was for me and my dh when we got married in '93. Although buying a larger diamond was out of the question for us then, and I guess it still is! I have an inherited 5.8mm FVS2 center stone, not ideal cut, but nice. I think I'll just hang on to that for now and be very glad I have it. :)

I bought a .82 ct in Dec 2007. In 5 years, prices on diamonds with the same specs have gone up 42-45%, $3,000 to ~$4,300ish. The 18k white gold setting I got has gone from $650 to $875.

If you're interested, it's possible to get a less-than-stellar performer recut. It's typically in the $300-500 range to do so. Brian Gavin does recuts.

In 2007 you have paid for your setting more than what the current shopper will pay for it:
2007 gold was:877$ by Dec 2007, your setting was 650, so you could of got for it : 650/877=0.7 ounces of 24 carat pure gold.
2013 gold is as we speak:1663$ so the shopper now for the setting price of 875 can get :875/1663=0.5 ounces of pure gold.
in reverse:
You paid in 2007 0.7 ounces of pure gold for your setting.
Current shopper will pay only half an ounce for it.

The only problem is for some one who's income is not adjusted to inflation, yes then it is true to say it is more expensive to that person since the inflation is eating up his/her purchasing power.

It seems to me the prices were sky rocketing at one point almost every couple of months. Now, the prices seem to have dropped & leveled off. I could be wrong, but looking at some inventory, I kind of wish I had waited until now to buy my stone (especially since I'm still not engaged). I rushed to buy fearing that the prices would climb out of our reach some day. Oh well....

Thanks for the tip. I am indeed considering having BGD do this because they are the ones who'll be setting the stone, too. :)
