Oooooo, YUM! The color of that spinel is simply gorgeous!!

Glad this stone is more appealing to the crowd. The vendor is working on a couple of other options for me that might be closer to the initial dimensions, but this stone will be a good fall back if we can''t strike the right budget vs price combination.

Still no help on the setting though

As an aside, I''m really enjoying this hunt more than the one for the engagement ring. The pressure is off in a way and it is fun to throw ideas around direct with the cutter. The ability to relay your thoughts and have someone look through their rough and stone collections is really great. Diamond buying feels very detached compared to this process.

Just my $0.02

Pie -- This new one is lovely. Great color!

Do you have any settings in mind that you like ... If you post pics, maybe this will help trigger us to think of other options for you.

Here''s one I like from the forum. I like the look of the first tapered baguette but I would probably go to a plain shank from there rather than the eternity style thing this one has going on.

This next one is probably the initial type of thing I had in mind, a definite three stone look but I don''t think the budget is necessarily going to go the distance to get the diamond sides I pictured of sufficient size to go down this avenue. I had envisaged step cut traps for this but this was the only pic I could find with an east-west stone.

here's the three stone pic. I am thinking just smooth lines on the setting though. Not with the decorative bits this one has on it

I like this idea. I REALLY like the idea of baguettes continuing all the way around. But also agree it would still look nice with must the first tapered baguette.

I also think that Sholdt designs has some very sleek looking east-west settings, for example, this one:

I also like some of the others with more pave' detail. Check it out, if you are open to other suggestions.

Oh, and I love the new stone!

Hi Missrocks

Thanks for the link. There are some good designs to consider there.

I know she doesn''t like the stones going all the way around the band from when we looked at wedding bands. I ended up with a simple band with 10 RB 0.35tcw channel set for her for that. She doesn''t see the point in paying for diamonds that will be out of sight the whole time. Plus she was concerned about damaging them over the course of time. She can be pretty hard on her jewellery

I also need to stick to a pretty strict budget. I spent a fair bit on the ER and WB because I bought at a "name" store. That means I''m a bit unsure about some of the more elaborate pave settings along with giving away the 3-stone concept. I guess the best thing would be to pick what I like and work backwards from there with the jeweler to make budget if necessary.

Well I kinda chickened out on the step cut and went for a modified cut in the end with a brilliant pavilion.

Stone is 1.58ct 5.7mm x 7mm Nigerian Sapphire.

I was a bit concerned about the stone being too dark after the first stone I had out so the vendor nicely took a picture. The picture shows the spinel from earlier in the thread on the top left, the sapphire I chose on the top right with an emerald cut with scissor cut facets on the bottom. I was really surprised at the effect of the scissor facets. I think this stone would look really nice as a drop pendant or similar. He took the photo in lower level light so I could get a better idea of how it came up. He has promised that the stone is quite brilliant in stronger lighting - he described as stunning so we shall see...

Getting a look at them like this was really handy as I could see the relationship between the different L:W ratios and got to see that I preferred a slightly squarer(sp?) stone.

WOW I''m loving that bottom stone-where is this that you''re getting it from and what are the stats on that baby?

Hopefully not breaking any rules...

It is a pretty cool stone but a bit long for a ring setting I feel. The scissor facets really show up the body colour. I think it''s 1.4ct approx. I''m sure the vendor would be happy to sell it to you

I think the sapphire is the best size and shape for a ring, particularly for a wedding gift. It has a lovely cut!

Got my hands on the stone this morning. I think it is very nice in person. I haven''t got to examine it in a range of lighting yet but there are plenty of nice blue body flashes in the crummy office lighting. It is a much more lively stone than the previous one I had. I will post up some pics in the next day or two.

Now for the ranting bit...

So I show it a work colleague, who promptly grabs it out of the container and puts his greasy mitts all over the stone
29.gif
No by your leave or anything just straight into it. Then he puts it back in the box and tells me it looks a little dirty!!

Well the stone is at the jewelers.

I just couldn''t get any good shots with the camera
29.gif
Having said that, trying to take them hidden away in a back room without arousing the suspicions of the GF didn''t really give me the best conditions. The jeweler seemed to like the stone well enough and thought it was a fair value/price proposition.

I''ve gone for a design that is inspired by Pandora''s tsav ring but no doubt no one will see the connection except me
39.gif
Well that is probably for the best as I doubt it will stand up to direct comparison with my budget - haha!

Of course the jeweler has taken off on holidays for a couple of weeks now but has promised me a finished product by the end of March. I need to have an idea for the engraving to go inside the ring for when he gets back. I can have about 10-13 characters. Any suggestions?

Engraving: My suggestion might be a little cheesy, but the sapphire symbolizes fidelity, and D.H. Lawrence has a poem called fidelity that I think really captures the symbolism of marriage and the sapphire (you can google to get the rest of the verses):

And when, throughout all the wild orgasms of love
slowly a gem forms, in the ancient, once-more molten
rocks
of two human hearts, two ancient rocks, a man’s heart
and a woman’s,
that is the crystal of peace, the slow hard jewel of trust,
the sapphire of fidelity.
The gem of mutual peace emerging from the wild chaos of love.

Perhaps a phrase from this? Or give her the poem in a the card and then engrave the word "fidelity" in the ring... that would make my heart melt!

I love this poem, and not just because it busts out the word "orgasm"! haha

Hey pieface! Do you happen to know what kind of stone that is? I couldn't find it on the website. I highly doubt I can afford it, but I think it'd be eye catching in a north south ring setting. Ooo....I want to see more pics...

Here is the link. It is very affordable.

Daschie thank you very much for your input! That is a nice stanza-thingy. I''d have to make sure there was no confusion with the jeweler...wouldn''t want the "O" word to end up on the ring

I know what you mean about the cheese factor, I have had things like "always" and "devotion" running through my head but it just sounds a bit daft when you say it out loud. I guess I''m not that much of a romantic, lol! I''m thinking having the wedding date on there might be nice too...plus I can always sneak a peek if I forget

Frekechild...just email Dan. You will most likely be pleasantly surprised and he can get you more pics if it is still available.

Threadjack-we used an adaptation of this poem in our wedding ceremony. The funny thing is, I never looked up the original poem, I just used an excerpt I''d found in a wedding readings site. It replaced "orgasm" with some other word I can''t remember right now!

I wonder how THAT would have gone over with our guests.

I think just engraving "Sapphire of fidelity" would be really cool!
