so you are telling me that it's okay to call any stone that has been used in the "trade" by a certain unaccepted trade name like(see below)... the newest trade name and fake is azezulite..it's what the meta folks are using for plain ordinary quartz...because of the name folks are being duped into buying something that is so common..this is all over the min. world right now...I googled it and had 10,000 hits...you had 700,000 thousand... this is a new thing only been out a few months..does that make it right...well heck I don't have any azezulite in my collection maybe I should get some but come to find out it's ordinary quartz...huh..I have topaz specimens from all over the world of almost every color(some I am lacking) but I see silver topaz..whats this never heard of it...heck new find..new variety..like I said before I had never heard of this so if i was to go out and purchase a "silver topaz" get it home and...well..dang all this is is clear or colorless topaz..i have tons of this..I figured it would have silver in it or flecks of silver or a silver color...you had some good examples with starlight, uralian emerald, flame spinel but the term "silver" it has no silver color in it and the term "silver denotes a silver color to the stone....very deceptive to the uninformed or novice

A little more...The true names for the gemstones are mostly derived either from Greek or Italian language. The original names are meaningful and carry some significance while the trade names are mere fanciful and created just to capture the minds of the ignorant buyers. The genuine names for all the gemstones are regulated through the International Association of Jewelry, International Colored Stone Association (ICA) and Federal Trade Commission. These organizations protect the consumers by providing the guides and related books consisting the details of the certified gemstone sellers and other necessary information about the gems like nature, quality, characteristics, strengths, weaknesses etc. From checking IAJ and ICA i see no reference to silver topaz whatsoever as an accepted trade name..none..I do however see rubellite and paraiba check website...I don't recall GIA using the term silver topaz but they sure did use rubellite, indicolite, etc.

Misleading trade names for topaz
Topaz is widely used in all the jewelry items. It is available in many colours. Sellers enhance quartz and sell the same as original topaz under the trade names Madeira Topaz, Palmeira Topaz, Rio Topaz, Hinjosa topaz, silver topaz, golden topaz, Spanish topaz, Smoky Topaz, Scottish topaz, Orange topaz, Topaz quartz and Topaz saffronite. Similary poor quality sapphire is treated and sold as Indian topaz, King topaz, Star topaz, Palmeira topaz and Topaz cat's eye. oh yea and Richard after page six of googling silver topaz which is like 60 hits there might be one "silver topaz" on the page per page and the rest are like "sterling silver topaz earrings" so 700,000 thousand is not really correct....maybe 100 hits for silver topaz(more or less I didn't go over page 16)

I had a bit of a spree lately - have a few inexpensive stones coming from Rick at artcutgems, one of which is another silver topaz! A peridot is coming - and I bought a cabochon stone, that I am making enquiries about getting re-polished...it''s a glowy stone in spite of being included.

My theory is this - these stones can be set any ol'' time - but they MUST be bought as soon as being spotted! I lost out on two beauties recently, one of which I so so wanted...both of them went to ladies on here - so it''s all good!

I had a bit of a spree lately - have a few inexpensive stones coming from Rick at artcutgems, one of which is another silver topaz! A peridot is coming - and I bought a cabochon stone, that I am making enquiries about getting re-polished...it''s a glowy stone in spite of being included.


My theory is this - these stones can be set any ol'' time - but they MUST be bought as soon as being spotted! I lost out on two beauties recently, one of which I so so wanted...both of them went to ladies on here - so it''s all good!

Another vote for getting its own thread!!

That is atypical of a gullible "fork-over-money-consumer" Oh it's a pretty name..If I was to call this sapphire a silver sapphire you would jump my case, if i was to call it that...it's a marketing gimmick to reel in folks like you who otherwise would not have bought a "colorless topaz" Doesn't sound good but since it's called silver topaz it's much better than a colorless topaz... it has more worth, more prestige...well..heck it's better because of the word silver(sarcasm

I doubt Pwendyp bought this stone because she''s a "gullible fork-over-money-consumer" who fell for the pretty name

It''s a beautiful stone in its own right regardless of what it''s called. Besides, aren''t there much more important (and serious) things to worry about than a slightly romanticized name?
