I have a nice oec diamond I need to sell. I'm attaching the paper which gives measurements. The only discrepancy I have with them, is the diamond appears warmer than J. I would estimate K/L.

It has a beautiful face up appearance with greatly desired symmetry oec faceting. I'm sorry the pictures I have aren't very good. I'll try to get some better ones today.

As for clarity, lengthy examination with my 30x loupe only allowed me to find a tiny natural at one point on the girdle. There is also one small inclusion seen only from the pavilion. Face up is perfectly eye clean!!

I'm asking $1600 with full money back guarantee. Please feel free to ask questions. I've bought and sold many times to PSers. If you need a reference to be comfortable, I'm sure one or two folks will speak up for me.

Re: .81 oec diamond

Hi,

Last night on Antiques Roadshow, the jewelry expert appraised a piece that looked like a pin. It had a finely made critter with a 1.50 ct old mine cut diamond that he said was very nice. The piece appraised for 2500. although I forget if it was an auction appraisal or retail. I did wonder at that time if folks on PS weren't overpaying for these old cuts. This was a carat and a half already set in a lovely piece.

I really don't mean to question your asking price but I wonder if there are any other coments.

Annette

Seems like popularity has caused prices to skyrocket. I found a gorgeous .29 K VS2 OEC on ebay and it went for $120. I was tempted to bid on it, but thought it would have gone over $200 so I didn't bother, then came home to find someone won it for that small amount of money. Now, the prices are A LOT higher and some of those diamonds have low clarity, with chips, etc., which surprises me!

Re: .81 oec diamond

I've been surprised at the price of old cuts lately myself. I'm still trying to complete a project and every time I turn around the price seems a bit higher still. Then I look at new cut stones and the price is always much higher. And even with the new old style cuts being done, you just don't get them like you used to! Old cuts are still a fantastic bargain for the most part. (but no one else buy any until I've finished my project, please 8) )

I want to attend this auction with this 1.5 carat in a nice setting. I'm sure I could find $2500 in cash and quickly!

Re: .81 oec diamond

Diamond prices have gone up. But, pricing doesn't have to do with carat weight alone. Cut, color, clarity, are all factored in. Some times old stones have girdle issues. Many times these girdle chips don't affect the integrity of the stone but some times it can and that would affect pricing/value. I just had a .97ct Transitional stone appraised and it appraised for $5400 so I'm guessing something has to give with the stone on the show.

If you look at comparable stones on OWD and JbEG I think the pricing on this stone is very fair. I have a .84ct listed right now for $2200 and think it's a fair price considering it's H/VS2.

Re: .81 oec diamond

Ditto Lindsay.

My local jeweler gets estate pieces and he always lets me know but most of the time they are priced out of my range. They recently had a N/O/P I1 with a fairly sizeable girdle chip that was 1.30c and around 7mm that was $4k. Also, they had a beautiful 7mm 1.3c'ish J VS that was $7500. Big range there.

I've seen stuff priced REALLY low and REALLY high and all sorts of things in-between. The other thing with some of these older stones is that well-cut stones can be harder to find, more and more jewelers (like my local one) will take anything that is decent and just recut it to modern because they can make way more $$ selling a modern than an OEC. So whenever I find a good one, I often snap it up and hope I can find a use for it. If not I know someone else will want it for a project!

If I could have found a 1.5c well-cut J/K/L/M OEC or OMC for $2500 I would have snapped that up in the shortest instant. That sounds like a dream! To me that stone had to be a light yellow or badly included or both of the above or maybe just not very symmetrical or bad patterning etc. It's hard to know from the description.

Re: .81 oec diamond

Is there any way you could get a clearer macro shot of the faceting? Looks promising, but I can't tell the patterning from your pics. Thanks!

It's a good question, but probably could use it's own thread and not be on this one. :wavey:

I have to admit, my first reaction to Annette was "Hey! I'm trying to sell something here!" But I really did chuckle, because I've ridden the highs and lows of the vintage stone market. I've always loved old stones, probably driven because I received a beautiful transitional cut family stone when my husband proposed way back in 1985. I always knew my stone sparkled more than my friends, but didn't know why until I joined PS. That kindled my passion for old cuts.

Since then, I, like Mara, have a tendency to to "adopt" many old cuts until I can find a new home for them. During the past five years I have seen (bargain) prices for <1.0 carat stones go from $10 per point to $30 per point. I had been holding this one for a pendant, but I have something more unique in the pipe for which I'd rather use these funds.

For those who actually asked for more info on this stone, I've seemed to misplace the SD card for my camera, so hubby will be picking up a new one on the way home. I'll post more tonight.

Thanks for ALL the responses!!

Re: .81 oec diamond

I think the pricing on this stone is very fair considering you took the time to hunt and find it, and it looks nice and bright in the distant shots Uppy!

If anyone wants to pay less and find a crazy deal, they are welcome to search ebay themselves I am sure ::) 8) :rodent:

Lovely! Of course! You have a great eye for these strays :))

Re: .81 oec diamond

THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL STONE....

Re: .81 oec diamond

See that is a great looking stone. Then new pics really show it well. I cant imagine trying to rate it against a stone I saw set on tv, on a show that is not a market standard for valuing things, but an entertainment. A J .81 ideal round vs1 is 2,700 on blue nile today, and that is a personality-less generic cut. When well executed ( as this one looks to be) antique cut stones can be far more lovely. I can't think why they should not be valued the same as modern automated machine cut stones.

Re: .81 oec diamond

Great stone, Uppy!! I am sure it will sell quickly!

Re: .81 oec diamond

He he he...I am still laughing at "critter." I think that was a good deal as well. Lucky buyer, pretty stone.
