i know this isn''t new to the seasoned people here, but i thought i would throw some information out there just the same.

i ran accross this image while selecting lights for a project and thought i would pass it along with a little FYI. when in stores shopping, be aware of what type of lighting you are looking at things under. the little round lights like pictured below are much brighter and WHITER than standard lights. they are great for looking at artwork, but make shopping for things that sparkle a little harder

p.s. for those of your who have pictures of your rings in EVERY possible light (you know who you are..) ... you may want to try some of these small halogens.

good point lost on 5th, also the recessed round bulbs (which I can''t see if that is what the picture shows or not) like in many kitchens and restaurants are just dynamite for diamonds, BUT that does not make it easy while shopping.

case in point, a month ago we were in an old cathedral in SF for a concert greg was playing and i noticed the church lights were just setting off my diamonds...this was the best light i had ever seen them, my hand looked like a flaming fireball of sparkle due to all the melee etc. funny thing was that my 10 stone rhr from eBay with the SI/I1 J/K stones that normally sparkles very sedately in regular lighting due to the mediocre cut...was going off with TONS of sparkles and fire as well. so if those had been jewelry store lights and i was shopping, i would have been fooled into thinking that 10stone would be filled with well-cut stones!

with any in-store purchase, if possible, ask to see it in natural lighting or take it outside the store into the sunlight or diffused sunlight (aka under an awning etc)...this will be harder in a maul but wait...what are you doing in a maul jewelry store anyway?!?!

I''ve noticed that for some reason, church lighting is AWESOME lighting for jewelry...lol! Sometimes I feel almost sinful in church, because instead of paying attention to the service, I''m constantly tempted to look at my diamonds sparkle.

I love the lighting in my bathrooms, too. They are those recessed halogen lamps, and they light up my diamonds like they have electricity in them. When I take pics of my rings, I am always doing it in the bathroom because of the lighting and they way they dazzle.

Metal Hallide is even better than halogen. It is a whiter light which makes your diamonds look fabulous. They use metal hallide lighting at Costco.

Saw an ad for them in InStore Magazine - here is the link

The lights in the MUNI ( municipal transit) underground train station sets my e-ring off. I have no idea what type of lighting it is though.

you are right on track. the metal hallides are more white. incandescent ~ 2700K halogen ~ 3200k MH ~5000k

numbers aside....i find it interesting what light makes diamonds jump to life. and the church is one of them for sure! it must be because of the dimmer light overall... and catching a direct return from the many lights in the cieling... probably the same logic for the MUNI...

i notice it (or get distracted the most) in our office conference rooms. the presentation surface has multiple halogen lights trained on it from about 3'' away! some of the women in the office try and point out important things with their sparkley hand... and blind everyone in the room!

Coffee shops are great for diamonds too. FH and I met with a travel agent at one, and the guy could not stop staring at my ring! He was wearing some bling too, but mine was just on fire. Recessed halogen lights are a wonderful thing.

Another vote for bathrooms. particularly hotel and restaurant bathrooms. I don''t know exactly why. Recessed lighting I guess, but I''ve no idea what type of bulbs.

those metal halides only work well when there is a very high ceiling and the lights are far enough away to beccome a ''point'' source

hahaha... i hope not too many of your are planning on taking pictures in the bathroom now!!!

i will start looking for wall tile in the background

and garry- as far as i know MH lights are mostly for high bay spaces (mounting height of over 25'') they are a bit hot to be any lower... just wondering.... what sort of light is used when grading color???

I was taking some pictures one night to post on here, and using my wonderful bathroom lighting. I didn''t realize until I looked at the pictures (thanfully before I posted them) that I was caught in the reflection of the sink to ceiling mirror over my vanity wearing my NIGHTIE!

I almost didn''t notice that little detail, I was so focused on looking at the ring to make sure I had it in focus and everything that I almost didn''t see my nightie clad refection in the background. Boy, you all dodged a bullit on THAT one...
