TL''s recent posting raised my interest. But most of the stones I see on ebay are either green-yellow or yellow-green...sort of unattractive. What is considered the best color for chrysoberyl?

The problem with chrysoberyl isn't so much that is shows green or yellow-green, but the modifiers that take over, such as grey (in yellow-green stones) and brown (in golden stones). It's more of a challenge to find a saturated stone without strong modifiers, but when you do, they are very special gems. I prefer the greenish yellow ones, as I am not a fan of golden yellow as the modifier tends to be brown. My chrysoberyl cushion is a very saturated neon greenish yellow stone very reminiscent of the color of this car. I know this color isn't for everyone, but it is a very difficult color to find in nature, and IMO very beautiful. IRL the green isn't so strong, and the yellow is the primary color, like this car. If you don't like greenish yellow, try to go for a more golden yellow stone, but be leary of ones that are too brownish.

Agree with TL... if you don''t like greenish yellow, look for a pure yellow, which are fairly easy to find it seems, or try to find a green without much yellow, like this one from Tan. These seem more rare and priced accordingly, but I''m no expert.

Kapuzi,
I respectfully disagree, pure yellow is not easy to find. Yellow in gemstones always seems to have a orange, brown, green, and/or grey component. Pure yellow means it''s highly saturated yellow, and that, to me anyways, seems elusive.

I agree, I agree, I cannot say this more... I agree. If you are cursed with "color correctness" you are in deep trouble for vivid yellows, oranges, reds, greens lol! Oh and blue, purple too! Getting my eyes to see pure yellow is... well.... VERY hard! There is almost always a modifier. TL maybe we should have our eyes checked LOL!

LOL Soberguy!!

For the record, this is as yellow as my chrysoberyl gets. The photo was taken in natural diffused sunlight. It goes a bit more greenish in incandescent light. This chrysoberyl is a very saturated stone with hardly any unwanted modifiers. It is so bright, that it appears to glow in some of my shots.

I was talking to someone offline about chrysoberyls and they were interested in the incandescent color, but my photos can't get the incandescent color to come out perfectly because it sparkles too much under incandescent lighting (they always come out fuzzy). I printed a photo of neon chartreuse gymshoes and placed the chrysoberyl face down so you could see the body color better. This is the incandescent color. I find this color pretty electric.

They''re good for night driving since they glow in the dark!

No no, I concede. :) By "pure yellow" I think I meant yellow without much if any green, and I misspoke.

It seems that pure yellow can only be found in most artificial colors. I wonder why it''s so difficult to see pure yellow and why it can''t be captured in nature. The wavelength must have something to do with it. I''ve seen pure green, orange and blue, but I''ve rarely seen pure yellow.

Now, this is vivid yellow. I don''t see any brownish, or greenish, or orangy tone.

I think it looks slightly golden, but even canaries look slightly golden to me. So much for canary yellow!! It is a very nice yellow diamond though.

. . . and look at the spectrum of color, look how tiny the pure yellow is. All the other colors leave a broad swatch, except for the one tiny line of pure yellow.

Fellows, this is hilarious! I am now offered a yellow-green car, a canary diamond, a canary, a pair of sneakers, and a green chrysoberyl from Tan. And a color palette for comparison!
I am just joking - thank you all very much. TL, I love the color of your stone! I shall be using the palette, because the car is a little bit out of budget...
And oh, yes - if someone sees a nice stone which he/she is not intending to buy - can you, please, page me?

Jessi, you should totally get one! When I look at mine, I have moments where I wish I''d had it as my ering stone, I adore it so much! Hopefully I love my yellowish green as much as I love my greenish yellow!

Best of luck with your chrysobery search, crasru. I too have that bug, but purchased so many stones during the month of May, that I''m banned from any further purchases until July

Hehehe.... I think I really lucked out on Gene''s chyso. I really need to get on the ball and get into taking pictures of the stones again. LOL...

I''m still missing it on chrysoberyl, isn''t this the same color as yellow sapphire? I am to understand there is a fluorescent element to it?

Somebody tell it to me slowly . . .

iLander,
That''s just it, yellow sapphire is typically diffused, and when it isn''t, it can be very expensive, even for small stones. A chrysoberyl has hardness, luster, polish, durability, it''s never treated (that I know of), and it has so much going for it, and it''s less expensive per carat (all things being equal). It only lacks exposure of the marketing that sapphire has.

However, that being said, I''ve never seen a neon chartreuse sapphire, but I have seen some chrysoberyls that look a golden or canary yellow like most yellow sapphires.

Oh!!!!

That''s awesome! A chartreuse stone. Cool!

TL: You have the coolest stuff.

Thanks for pointing this thread out, TL. I'm bumping it because it seems to have lots of good color info.

No problem Uppy, I'm glad you thought it would be of some value. If you look at the spectrum I placed above, I would imagine highly saturated pure yellow to be extremely rare. That photo represents a high degree of saturation of all the colors of the rainbow. You could take that same spectrum and add more brown to the warmer colors and more grey to the cooler colors, and then you begin to realize how incredibly rare pure saturated yellow (that thin swatch) truly is.

When I see my gem in certain lighting, it does go very yellow and very saturated, and it's quite amazing to see something like that in nature, whether it's a flower or a butterfly wing, but in a transparent gem, it's just amazing. Most of the time there is a secondary greenish component in my chrysoberyl though, especially in incandescent lighting, but again, even with secondary colors in the hue, you want to avoid brown or grey modifiers. I hope that helps. The secondary greenish component does not make the gem bad at all, I love it in there, but for those looking for a very pure yellow, extremely highly saturated gem, it can be a challenge, unless you get something enhanced.

However, it's the color in combination with the amazing luster and sparkle that really makes me love fine chrysoberyl.

I've gone through some ebay listings and pulled a couple of stones that I think have the colors (without brown) and saturation that is desirable. Would you mind commenting on them? BTW- I'm just gathering info, so not worried about anyone poaching these.

1) This one seems to have the purest yellow, and the level of saturation looks pretty high.

2) This one is more chartruese. But it could have the neon look.

3) Nice apple green color, but lower saturation.

4) :lickout:

I think the first one is brownish. Or my monitor shows it brownish.
