speaking about chrysoberyl...

I've gone through some ebay listings and pulled a couple of stones that I think have the colors (without brown) and saturation that is desirable. Would you mind commenting on them? BTW- I'm just gathering info, so not worried about anyone poaching these.

1) This one seems to have the purest yellow, and the level of saturation looks pretty high.

2) This one is more chartruese. But it could have the neon look.

3) Nice apple green color, but lower saturation.

4) :lickout:

According to Tan, the fourth one you posted is the best he has in stock right now, and that's what he told me. I just have not recommended it because to me, I don't see the vivid saturation like I did with my listing/video and Chrono's (I spotted hers and it was on my watch list before she bought it).

I do not recommend the other three because again, I just see either too much grey or brown. Good chrysoberyl is really hard to find. Even at the Grainger museum that has a large selection, they were all very mundane.

Uppy, thanks for starting a topic on chrysoberyl - I'm also in the market for a good chrysoberyl after seeing TL & Chrono's gorgeous stones.
& TL, thanks for your comments and useful information. :halo:

I'm a bit disappointed to hear that there is little or no chryso of good quality available on ebay atm... :(sad
I'm doubly disappointed, as I bought a chryso from Tan a couple of days ago - Tan did tell me that it had strong saturation with no grey/brown and was neon greenish yellow (though with 'traces of slight window'...). It didn't cost much, so I really don't have high expectations that it would blow me away, however, I do want it to be pleasing to the eye. Oh well, I'll just have to wait & see how the stone looks in person...

You're welcome Vigoruby,
Please let us know how you like your chrysoberyl when you get it. Do you have a vendor picture to share with us in the meantime? :naughty:

I just wanna share with u gals that I saw this really bright and yellow oval Chrysoberyl in the jewel show. It is 5.21 carat. Well-cut. asking at sgd 600 (approx US450). I think that its really pretty, but its a little pricey to me. Hmm.. my handphone ran out of batt, so I didn't manage to get a snap of it. But I did get the contact from the seller:) Sorry for the threadjack I was wondering if it is ridiculous paying for US 450 for a quality 5.2 carat, native cut Chrysoberyl? I think I can get a untreated yellow sapphire (of a smaller carat weight) around the same price too.

Buy it, that's super cheap if that is the whole price of the stone. Chrysoberyl gets very expensive above 4 carats too. An unheated yellow sapphire the same color would cost at least that much PER CARAT. Just make sure it's not some other stone, but in fact, a real chrysoberyl. We need pics!

I was at a gem show recently, and did not see one single faceted yellow chrysoberyl. I saw some corpse colored vanadium ones, but that was it.

Hi Tl! I will try to request a pict from the seller, hopefully its still available. Shall keep u gals update!

Uppy,
Here's a screen capture of the pavillion views of my stone (to the right) and that stone (to the left). Do you see what I'm talking about? I see more grey in the stone on the left, although it might be nice in person. Of course I'm relying on a video, but that is what I see if the videos were made with equal settings.

Yes, of course. Here is a screen capture of the stone in question.
As you can see, it has a wonky cut & I'm sure it's got more than 'traces of slight window' as Tan put it; however, what do you think of the colour? Compared to your (TL's) neon chryso, it looks a bit 'muddy' - is that because of grey/brown modifier? I would love to hear your honest opinion. Thanks!

Vigor,
Since you asked for my honest opinion, I see brown in it. You might love it in person though. Let me know what you think when you get it.

Here's more of a table, crown view of my chrysoberyl with the one that Uppy is considering. I'm not loving that gem, but it's a pretty stone. Not every gem in the world can be top top vivid, who even knows if my chrysoberyl is since I've not had much experience with them.

Here is another screen capture of a 1 carat chrysoberyl I won on auction before I bought the 3 carat. It is also a neon stone, very bright, just in case people want to compare. After I got this gem, I immediately bought the 3 carat. The cutting is awful, and there's a window, but the color is just something else.

Thanks TL. :halo: It was modestly priced at USD65, so I'm not too devastated by your 'brown' comment  , though I hope it looks okay IRL. If I absolutely can't stand it, I guess I can return it..

And thanks for posting lots of pics to compare - they are a great way of studying colour/vendor pics.

Uppy - I can not comment on the last one because I shall not spend so much $$ on a chrysoberyl, but from my experience, "lemon" ones are lacking in saturation.

Thanks everyone. I'm excited to be learning about a new stone!

Get one Uppy! You will looove it!

I'm starting to think that the payment I sent to Michael might end up being diverted towards a new one.

ChicTomato,
If the chrysoberyl is truly bright yellow and well saturated, USD$450 is a very good price for an over 5 ct stone. I don’t think I’ve seen an untreated yellow sapphire with a pure yellow hue and strong saturation unless one is willing to spend a fortune.

Chryso1: Looks to be dispersive but there is definitely some brown in it. However, for the price, it might be worth it.
Chryso2: Reminds me of my own with the green modifier. Yes, it has minor cutting issues but also has the potential be to look nice IRL.
Chryso3: More on the green side and not eye popping in saturation though.
Chryso4: It has the size but the saturation could be better. I might forgive it though if it has a higher crown. With a lower crown, it may not play up the brilliance and luster chrysoberyl normally show.

I wanted to also add that it will be helpful if some of those stones included a side view to see the body colour and a video to see how it reacts as opposed to a static picture.

Tan's videos are another big plus in his business model. I know that I'm much more willing to take a chance on a stone when I can get a glimpse of its performance through the video clip.

I've decided to take a chance on the second stone. I hope that getting one in my hand can help me be discerning with further choices. :read:

Hi all, just wanna share the update, my above mentioned 5.2 carats Chrysoberyl is SOLD

Bummer, sorry to hear that Chictomato! :((

Maybe he can get another???

Hi TL! He said that the stocks were from his friend in Sri Lanka, the others in the parcel are rather 'windowed' Anyway, I have settled for Barry's Chysoberyl 1919, love his cut and the SALE :naughty: hopefully its bright with no brown IRL, I will certainly post some photos when it arrived. OK Uppy, enough of the threadjack  hope you'll find a Chrysoberyl that you like soon!
