Spinel vs ruby

Do you like the colour? If you do and were looking for a ruby then this would be a good alternative BUT I have to say that it's very brown/red. I suspect that in real life the brown will be more prominent than the photo and it might look quite dark. Spinel often black out in certain lighting conditions as well so it may be worth asking the Vendor how the stone looks in daylight/incandescent lighting. If it's the colour you're after then why not get it for a look.

Isn't it also a hint windowed? Looks a tad dark as well.

Since they have a return policy maybe if you really like the color you can see it under different lights.

Spinels are a great alternative to rubies. Unfortunately, this particular spinel is very brown and is likely to look more unattractive indoors.

Spinel is rated lower on the mohs scale but considered a sturdy stone for rings. I think it usually has more of a purple undertone and most red spinel have an orange or brown secondary color. I think pink secondary would be preferable if you're looking for an alternative to ruby. Have you looked at Jeff Davis/Ebay? Then there are also some pink sapphires which can be close to ruby or spinel. Happy hunting.
