So, I've decided to move forward with VC for my EC. So excited! :appl: He quoted it with standard French cuts but there is an option to go with high dome French cuts instead. It's not a big difference price wise but I don't know what the difference is.

Can anyone help me? :wink2:

Thanks!

Interesting... my eye is pretty trained for french cuts, but I found it hard to decipher the vids. I'm still dizzy from looking very closely at those rotating rings. I think you are right though, the high domed are pic 2 in Circe's thread, and the "regular" are pic 1. I personally love the "high domed" (in quotes because I thought these are "standard" french cuts) stones, that's the kind I'd been searching high and low for a long time (and finally found). I wonder what the other kind of frenchie looks IRL.

How are you going to decide which one you want? Seems pretty hard to do from just the pics...

It seems to me like the high dome might have more facets but that might just be the picture. It's so hard to tell...For the minimal price difference though, (hundreds of $) I'll probably go for the high dome.

I'll give Victor a call later to discuss but I thought maybe this was something that most people understood - just not me. :)

I appreciate your input...

I love that second example! French cuts + mil grain = I want.

Came back to puzzle over this and noticed that I misread your post last time regarding which pic corresponded with which type of french cut. Sorry about that. I hope Victor can give you some insight on the visual differences between the two kinds of stones (and you can pass the info on to us :read: ).

Huh, those pics don't make it very clear, do they ....

I think it's actually a little different from the types I was asking about in the thread, where I was asking about vintage pieces. I haven't seen any modern cutters making stones like, say, these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ART-DECO-PL...000?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d3118000

What I am seeing is stones that look like this: http://www.betteridge.com/betteridge-french-cut-diamond-eternity-band-10-ct-tw/p/2663/ as opposed to this; http://www.langantiques.com/products/item/110-3-3992, where the ones in the first link look to have somewhat more crown height. I really don't know what accounts for the difference. I've heard that a lot of modern frenchies are recut princesses ... I'd guess since little princeses don't tend to be calibrated for table size and/or pavilion depth, they get the most they can from the material and then when they sort them, factor it in? Hopefully a cutter will chime in to resolve the mystery.

One of the points that Friday's Child was trying to make was that VC's stones, because they are cut from princess cuts, have a very different look than the stones that LM uses, which are cut to have high crowns.

I have a ring with VC's "high crown" french cuts in it! It's beautiful :lickout: When I placed my order for this ring I asked specifically for high crown stones. From memory I think he said no-one had ever asked for them before, and that his "normal" french cut stones were just as beautiful. I'm sure that's true ... but I specifically wanted the high crowns.

With an EC, I'd probably just go for the normal ones ... but I think the high crowns are best with OMC/OEC's which have high crowns also.

CaratLover -- thanks for that link. Great read. Interesting to note that all the french cuts in that thread are not like the french cuts we've been seeing in the eternity and half-eternity bands that have been in SMTB lately.
