It looks like it will be a fun piece to wear, and the ring was not all that expensive, as you have noted. I like the star, and I bet it is fun to play with in various lighting.

It comes down to how appealing you find the color of the sapphire. You will pay quite a bit more for a bluer star sapphire than for one that has a lot of grey.

The listing also doesn't mention if the sapphire is natural or man-made. Lab created star sapphires have been around for decades.

Enjoy! :wavey:

Well, you didn't pay a lot for it so don't expect too much out of it. Looking at the last picture, the cabochon is opaque and very gray which is what you will see most of the time. When you point a single strong light source on it, then it will lighten up a bit and the star will come out and play.

i wonder how opaque it will be in person the photos are very hard to judge opaqueness
I also wonder how easily the star pops because it was mentioned the star pops with little light

its a calculated gamble considering the scrap gold value and is a win
times are hard and people are selling good pieces , when the economy turns around will sell for well above scrap prices.
Its a buyers market ladies and gentlemen!

If you paid scrap value then you've got a great deal!

The legs of the star aren't poker straight so (hopefully) it's not a diffused star. As noted above the colour is grey and I suspect it'll look that way for most of the time. It does have a hint of violet (which I personally like). Star sapphires unfortunately (despite what sellers may say and if you look at the photo you can see a strong light has been pointed at the stone) don't perform as easily as you may think and so the majority of the time you won't see the star. In some ways I like that because it has hidden talents!

In terms of opaqueness (not sure that's a word) - star sapphires are by their very nature opaque. They are very rarely transluscent. Expect it to look like a grey/dense stone and then anything other than that will be a nice suprise!

Don't forget to let us know what it's like.

To get a strong star coupled with fine colour and translucency is rare and super expensive. Usually, for mere mortals like you and I, we tend for something translucent with a good star and sacrifice the colour a bit. In your case, I think it will be more opaque than translucent and it will take strong lighting for the star to show, as evidenced by how dark the shadow is from the light shining onto the cabochon to show the star phenomenon.

this star is much more translucent than the auction pictures i posted before,
The star comes out so easily and is inside the stone instead of sitting ontop.

The ring is much much nicer than the pictures i will post pictures soon.

The sapphire is like 10x crazier and more insane in person, you can see into it from the bottom but you cant read anything.
The stone is more blue lavender than pictured, when no light is present it looks like a crystal ball the silk is milky almost but
about 50% translucent .

its the most elegant men's ring i have ever procured its not perfect but its much better than it looks in the photos
and i will post some updates soon as i am very busy at the moment. thanks everybody for your support !!!

i am on cloud 9

So, so cool when you get a real "find" on ebay! Can't wait to see the pics and awesome that you love it so!

still waiting on my camera, in the meantime

what is the best way to capture how translucent the stone is?
i want to take the best pictures to show the stones properties

i will give you my opinion on it so far,

The stone is very milky and has a very high dome, the dome points a bit which i find neat,
the stone has a heavy bottom, the star almost shines through the bottom , you can see into the stone but its a very fine haze
there are a few inclusions other than the fine mist. the star comes out with no light just ambient daylight sun shining opposite side of the building. the stone glows in any lighting condition from its fine mist. there are a few spots on the stone where the milk is absent and the stone is totally transparent but the areas are hard to pinpoint with a quick view.
in the sun the star is incredibly crisp, the star always looks like its coming from inside the stone but not as deep as mtg's
it is not as transparent as MTG's star, it glows the exact same as hers from side views and has a similar profile

stone measures approx 9.5 mm by 9.5 mm depth approx 6-8mm

That sounds really cool, I can't wait for more pictures!

Ummm....perhaps you might have worded it inaccurately but it concerns me that if the star comes out easily without a direct light source, it may not be a natural sapphire. The star should also hover over the gemstone, not look as though it is from the inside. But no matter what, you paid a very low price, you like it and you understood and accepted the risks.

chrono its been tested and is natural sapphire, its just nicer than most
:lickout:

Thanks for the update. What did your jeweller use to verify it? Actually, I've been told that the best star sapphires should have the star hovering on the surface, not look as though it comes from deep within. How do you know this one is nicer than most? Just curious. :))

kimberly jewelry appraisal she is g.i.a. graduate gemologist i got her to check it out before leaving a positive feedback on the bay.
she positively identified my sapphire for 10 dollars , i use her for all of my stone id's

its 400$ a carat sapphire quality

what did she use? refratometer and something else that escapes me at the moment

when i get my camera at the end of the month i want your opinion chrono on the new pictures i take
sorry its all words and no images

Synthetic and natural sapphire share the same refractive index, only that one is man made, the other is Mother Nature made.

the refractometer coupled with the rough back unpolished rough sapphire and the inclusions she noted when she viewed it under her
microscope. a g.i.a. gemologist assured me it was a natural genuine and what appeared to be unheated sapphire what more can you ask for ?

I have no idea. 100 posts? 1000 posts? Just noticed the ring has 2 small white sidestones. What are those?

.10 each .20ctw of diamond total , just standard round brilliants, i was hoping for a fancy shape for the accent stones
but these round brilliants do a decent job on the side.

Though we cannot ID from pictures I would have guessed that this is indeed a natural star in a natural Sapphire with translucence and the star is is of medium high brightness, well centered plus the stone is a sought after color. Looks like you stole it for that price. Congrats. Best regards, Lee
