Hello everyone,
1st post i did a search with no luck. I have been looking and learning about cushion cuts for about 2 months now. Well my jeweler called me today to come look at a new stone he got in today. He showed me a cushion that was step cut and I have to say it looked amazing sorry no pictures. The price is 5,195.00
Specs.
1.03 ct
g color
vs2 Clarity

The question is because it isn't a traditional cut for a cushion I have no idea if the price is right. So what do you think?

are you talking about an asscher cut?

example:

No it isn't an asscher cut. It is faceted like an asscher but has the shape of a cushion.

So ... like a Tiffany Legacy cut, somewhat?

see that's what an asscher to me is. A step cut stone, like an emerald but with a cushion shape...can you get a picture of it?

That is exactly what it looks like, He said he got it from an estate. Could it be a tiffany stone that was removed from the setting IDK. I guess if it is it is priced right.

They are not that common but I would not call them rare.
There are a couple dozen facet patterns for them.
Some are just rounded cornered asscher cuts while others add more facets on the crown and or pavilion to help prevent a wonky girdle or to change the shape of the table.
More common would be mixed cut with a step pavilion and a brilliant cut crown but I have seen the reverse also.
I would expect pricing would be in line with other cushions.

HI focusr3
Karl's answer is spot on- to add it.....
There's a few cushion cutting styles that "project" like step cuts- some of them even classified as "Cushion Brilliant" by GIA
it really depends on the pavilion ( the back of the diamond) - how it's faceted, and the angles at which it's cut.
But there are definitely times a cushion can look like a step cut.

Is the diamond in question described in a GIA report?

Marymm,
That is it, Maybe not exactly but that is how i would say it looked. It is GIA but was unable to get a copy of the report. The thing i really like about it is it shows really well from the top anyway do they typically price out the same as traditional cut cushions. I don't want to over pay.

Yes

whoaaaa.. what an interesting cut!

That looks really neat. I'll have to watch the JA video later to judge how it performs for myself!

I know cushions are hard to judge with online pictures but the one i saw was amazing

Wow, I know nothing about step cuts, but I LOVE the way that looks.
