Hi all,
I've been reading old posts on PS for a couple of weeks now and they've been so helpful. I am getting pretty close to pulling the trigger but I had several little questions that I hoped you guys could address. Some of them have been discussed before, but not exactly on point (or maybe I missed it), so here goes:
I have pretty much decided on the Tacori 2620 medium setting with a round stone (also sliiiightly considering 2639, and 262
. I am leaning toward the pave but plan on looking at both pave/non pave in person before making a final decision. Any thoughts on setting are welcome - I am particularly interested in the pave/non question once the band is factored in. That is, what combinations are people especially fond of? Non-pave ER + pave band? Vice versa?
My main questions, though, have to do with the stone. I live in New York City, and don't have access to a car. I have read a lot of great things about GOG on this forum, and am happy to make the day trip out there if the consensus is that it's worth it. But in old posts I've read conflicting things about their pricing of stones. Before I go any further, this is where I'm at: My budget is about $11,000 for both band and stone. There's a little wiggle room there, if I found the perfect stone or something, but not a lot. (I am already planning on shipping to my house in NJ to save on sales tax, and paying by wire.) Because the Tacori setting is relatively expensive (about $4500 for platinum/pave -- oof), I really want to maximize my dollar when purchasing the stone. As mentioned before, I want to get the medium Tacori setting, so my understanding is that the stone has to be at least 1.2 ct (for the 2620). I have been looking online at stones that were (in order of priority) Excellent or comparable cut, G color and better, & SI1 and better. I am aware that this is a tall order for the $6500-7000 range that I'm in. So my questions are:
1) Does it sounds like I have a right mix of priorities as far as the specs? For example, in terms of what is more visible to the naked eye, would the next logical step down be to H in color, or to, say, SI2 in clarity? I realize that this is best answered by looking at particular stones, I'm just trying to get general information because you guys have a lot more experience than I do;
2) This is my main question: Bearing in mind my price constraints and unwillingness to go below H in color, should I put myself in GOG's hands to find this stone, or will I get a little more bang for the buck someplace else? Names I've read about on here include IDJ and James Allen, and obviously there are online retailers as well although I do think I'd prefer to see different stones compared with each other. I could also go to Michael C. Fina, which would be more convenient for me, although I have a hunch that their margin is higher and so I'd get less for my money -- correct me if I'm wrong on that. Also, if I get the setting at GOG or Fina first, but then get the stone someplace else (say at IDJ), who would coordinate with Tacori as to putting them together? IDJ doesn't have a relationship with Tacori, right? If I decide to get the band and stone from two different places, then, should I really be getting the stone first? Ahhhh so complicated!
In a perfect world I'd be able to make several trips to GOG and maybe IDJ's office to really see as much as possible, but as I said it's tough to get out to LI as I work during the day and live with my girlfriend (who I am trying to surprise). So bearing in mind that I'd like to make as few trips as possible, I'd love everyone's input. Thanks so much for your patience -- sorry to have written a novel -- and for your insight.
