Stone Weight?

I'm still trying to get the courage to order some colored stones to have some earrings made from (I say courage b/c I still don't know what to look for in many of the CSs). Most of the listings I've seen have the carat weight and the dimensions of the stone, but don't list the weight. How do I determine how heavy the stones will be once they're in my ear? I'm planning on doing some french hook style of some sort that dangle beneath my lobe, but I don't want something so heavy that it rips my ear hole or is uncomfortable.

Carat is a measure of weight... it's 1/5 of a gram.
