I recently just but diamond studs that are about .54 tw but when you look at them closely, one is slightly bigger than the other. My question is that is this common or did the jeweler make a mistake and give me two different sizes?

Most here would buy studs based on the diameter measurement more than the weight. Some people aren''t as picky as we are, though, and might not notice the size difference. It would drive me nuts! But of course, I wouldn''t buy studs in a local jewelry store, either.

that''s just sloppy pairing by whoever put them together, bludlum.

i''m with diamondseeker - that would send me nuts. i''d return and try to exchange for a better balanced pair.

Hey Blud,

You might not realize this as you are new, but only one thread per query is fine please, otherwise it gets confusing and we have replies all over the place!

diamondseeker, why wouldn''t you buy studs from a local jewelry store, is there something wrong with them?

Often they will be poorly quality and very overpriced. But even if they aren''t poor quality they are usually VERY overpriced.

So where is the best place to buy them??

i bought 2 pairs of the 1/2 ctw from WF for my daughters.

Or would you rather trust this jeweler that sold you this pair of studs?

I know it as a reputable dealer, stone-cold, obviously. did you think this is my first time going there?

jewelers are set up and official and some are members of the AGS. Anybody can open a website online and sell diamonds.

If you are concerned, get an independant appraiser to check each diamond and if they have grading reports that they match for weight, size, inclusions etc. For online vendors check out the link I posted above, these vendors are tried and tested with an excellent reputation. Also you can do a search using the tool above right to read up on others experiences with the vendors.

So? Then don't buy if you don't trust them, simple.

You are on the internet asking people to tell you how can you trust buying off the internet. How in the hell do you know we are not dupes or vendors themselves trying to lure in customers? HOW CAN YOU TRUST US? What is the logic you are trying to make here with that question?

I ask questions to get answers. It doesn''t mean I believe you. I''m trying to get the best explanations and decide for myself. Did you think this is my only means of doing research?

So? Then do some research on the companies we listed then. They have records with BBB, JVC, unless you don't trust those too. Buy with credit cards and get the diamonds independently appraised.

Maybe I will, maybe I won''t. I don''t see why you would be so concerned with that though.

Oh brother. I see this thread going downhill fast. To answer the original question -- I don't think its ideal or professional to pair up two different sized stones as a "set" of earrings. But I'm sure many people buy them & don't even notice because they are not discerning shoppers or have bad eyesight.

If you can return them, I would. When you choose another set elsewhere make sure you get the physical dimensions of the stones to judge for yourself if they are alike "enough". Or, if you get to look at them in person, all the better.

Times like this its just silly IMHO to try to advocate shopping online to someone who clearly is not interested in that path. Why waste your typing? Let the bargains be *our* little secret unless someone expresses a genuine, open-minded interest w/o slamming all online vendors out of the gate.

thanks. i like your responses much better than stone cold''s. i didnt go on here to argue with anybody but some people like to take things personally for no reason. I don''t know who i would decide to buy from for myself would bother anybody else. thank''s for everyone else''s help.

You have asked for opinions and help. Please don''t get snippy with people who have made suggestions or expressed their opinions.

The regular posters on this forum are, for the most part, either jewellery experts, collectors, gemologists and there are some vendors (who are bound by the forum to declare that in their posts). Over the years people have found who can be trusted when diamond buying and who can''t. That''s a generalisation but about covers the subject. There are threads of suggested online vendors to buy from and vendors are only added where forum members have experienced excellent customer service/value for money.

A "good" jeweller would not sell a mismatched pair of earrings. This may well be an error on their part but in general the size of the earrings should be the same with colour and clarity matching or within one grade of each other. If you''re concerned about the mismatching of your earrings perhaps it''s worth speaking with the jeweller, especially if you''ve bought from him/her in the past. You never know, the bigger one could be in your favour and the jeweller may give you the match to that one!

Yea i did that. it turned out the the size difference on the measuring device was 3.98 and 4.09 which is normal. For some reason I could tell the difference. They are going to give me two 4.09 for the same price. Thanks

Bludlum,

I think that what some of the commenters here were trying to say is that, if you shop online, you often get to *examine* a diamond far more thoroughly than at a store with fancy lighting, where all diamonds look good. The online vendors preferred by PSers generally offer ASET and Idealscope images, which are often the only means of determining whether a stone is cut to ensure high-quality light performance. This website offers a good explanation of what ASET and Idealscope do: here. Moreover, if you shop online, you will always have a period during which you can return a diamond after receiving it, just in case holding the stone in your hand causes you buyer''s remorse. Anyhow, best of luck with your earrings.

That sounds like a good resolution.

Just FYI: That isn''t really normal-especially for a pair that is small where the difference is more discernible.

Oh. Well that makes sense. I thought I had supervision or something. ha.
