Stupid Me

Getting ready to post some stones for sale over in DB. Did all the hard work over the last few days of taking pics and getting them sized and ready. First thing I do today? In the process of louping the Mahenge so I could describe its unique characteristics (isn't that nicer than "flaws?"), I dropped it on the tile floor and cracked it. One less to list now

It cracked just about all the way through one third of the stone. You know, it comes with the territory. By no means do I mean to be cavalier, but it was my typical foolish rushing that caused it. No one to blame but me.

I totally feel your pain and your anger, because I was exactly in the same situation. Hopefully, you will still be able to recut it into a pair of earrings! Good luck, Minous! (these bad, bad floors...)

I sometimes see stones with surface-reaching cracks, otherwise perfect, color and everything else. Is there any oil/resin to heal these cracks, like they use for emeralds?

Oh Minous, I'm sorry! What a bummer. Know how that feels -- I drop everything because I always hurry too fast. Once opened the pkg. w/a stone I had ordered & let it bang straight onto the floor, which luckily was wood so it didn't crack -- pure luck, not because I was smart. I feel for you!

That is really a bummer and quite rare too. Between myself and my kids, we drop so many stones that when I bend down to find one I always find others as well yet it generally does not crack them. Running over them with office chair wheels is quite the test though. My studio has a soft wood floor which no doubt helps. One might think that I knew what I was doing when I selected the cheap jungle wood for my flooring instead of the expensive hardwood but it was just dumb luck. Best regards, Lee

cheap jungle wood sounds pretty good right about now...

I know it is rare to crack it so viciously, but it had some kind of healed fracture or feather, and it just hit at the right stress point I guess when it landed. It dropped from full height, so probably 5+ feet as I think I was trying to loupe it at the time. Its all a blur except for the slo mo "Nooooooooo" and the loud, special effects sickly cracking sound as it hit the ground.

For those who know me, they know I'm dealing with something big with one of my kids and in some ways it couldn't have happened at a better time (of course I was hoping to use the $$ from the sale of the stone to help my son). It just puts it all in perspective. I just can't sweat the small stuff. I bought it from Tan originally and it wasn't perfect to begin with so oh well. It is what it is.

But thanks for all your well wishes! Will I learn from this instance? Time will tell...how about you all? Have you learned from your mistakes? Ark? Chris? and all the others who've suffered horror stories?

Well I can say that I am the proud owner of Chris's "mistake" - luckily it survived its fall and trek under the porch unscathed
I like your attitude Minous and I hope I remember it when something similar happens to me. No matter how careful I am - I'm sure its going to happen. I just hope I don't sweat it too much when it does!

I think I have learned as you have that all those pretty gems are just things. Yes we love them but anything can happen. They can be chipped, cracked, stolen, lost or a puppy can eat them. lol

One Adalusite- scratched- I don't know how.
One color shift chrysoberyl in gold setting- puppy chewed it up and swallowed the stone.
Large amethyst ring- scatched on face- who knows how?
1.25 carat pear alexandrite(beautiful medium light blue /green to purple) lost. And I tore up the house looking for that stone.
Then there are the stones and jewelry we sold at a fraction of the cost when we needed to raise funds.

Minous....Im so sorry! I definately feel your pain...I was lucky that all I lost when I dropped my Tanz was a Father's Day afternoon....as JBK says, the stone survived without incident, as it landed on soft wood and into the dirt/leaves under my porch. I never thought I would get it back but I did....I can only imagine the pain of losing a stone like that completely. What can you do...

I've learned that I will never take a gemstone outside or out into the porch unless it is in a container with a lid. LOL. looking back at how I was carrying the Tanzanite in the porch, I cant believe that is the only time one went boing. Just have to be more careful.

I guess accidents happen, but grrr when they are expensive rare gems...again, Im sorry

No that wasn't me. I did "look" for the 4 carat chrysoberyl but it was never found. I count us lucky as puppy later ate a decorative stone which caused him a lot of pain, x-rays and almost his life. So I am glad he passed the gem even though I never found it.

The alexandrite was soooooo beautiful. It had a blue/mint green color that was gorgeous in natural light and changed to the nicest purple. I really loved that stone because it is hard to find a color change stone that looks really good in all lights. I hope to get a vanadium chrysoberyl one day as that is the color I loved most in that stone. That cool minty blue........almost surreal.

Wasn't it Herekittykitty who was babysitting someone's dog, left her Mahenge ring on the Bible and could not find it in the morning? I remember the story because it was so strange. The dog was not hers, and had an idiotic habit of swallowing whatever she fancied. And yes, they found this ring in the ...er...refuse on day 3. They were not even sure it was the dog, it was
their opinion of the dog that made them check her wastes for three days in a row.

My spinel was not from Tan, and very pretty. It was smashed by my older son, who decided to loupe it and I allowed him to use the tweezers for the first time in his life. I guess he was trying to hold them "elegantly". I do not know what it taught me, I remember thinking, "here goes your fiancee's ering" (which is not true, I'll give him anything, I was just upset). So...never trust kids with stones. I guess. And usually I lose stones. Isn't there a show about closet declutterers? I need one for my jewelry box.
Minous, my mother used to say, "let all your problems, all frustration, go away with this... (damaged thing)". Minous, I wish that all your current problems go away with that cracked spinel!

Ugh, now it's my turn to be say "stupid me" I thought you were someone (also with "bijoux" in her name) that I knew from the purse forum. She kindly pointed out that I was a dork (she's also on PS, so I wasn't being a total loon), and now I'm back here.
