suggestions for a center stone

I have this gorgeous ring and I think I'm going to be replacing the center stone, but I have NO idea what direction I want to go in. I figured I'd post here for suggestions-many of you have an incredible eye and come up with such winning combinations I figured it couldn't hurt!

So it's an 18k pink gold halo with a platinum bezel. The center stone now is roughly 6x6x3 and it's a really pink ruby. It's okay, but my avatar shows my ruby halo which is gorgeous and this stone just doesn't hold a candle to it. I would like a different look. I'm toying with a sapphire, but don't know how it would look in this setting. I'd also like to entertain the idea of a tsavorite garnet. I also love spessartites but I'm wondering if that would be enough of a deviation from the ruby if they were both worn at once (on different hands!)

What I love about this ring is the richness. I love how royal it looks (to me) and want to take that in to consideration. I'd think about a diamond too but I kind of wonder if the ring would have the same impact.

So, I'd love thoughts! Please share. Right now it's less about what would appeal to me as it is what other people with good eyes feel would make it pop. Thanks for playing!

How about a brighter looking pink/red spinel? I love that setting but the stone is a bit dark, almost garnet like and I can see why you're not all that enthused about it when you have that gorgeous ruby ring too :)

I actually really love mint green with rose gold. It seems like a strange combo but it works. Or maybe a light blue? The contrasting colors would make both the setting and the stone stand out.

Yes! Minty green looks gorgeous with Rose gold! That would be my choice actually!

+1

thank you! so a tourmaline in minty green? I'm not sure of other stones that have that color. I was also liking the idea of a london blue topaz perhaps...

The whole picking a center thing is HARD.

I would put in a Welo opal.

Maybe because I was recently viewing a Colombian emerald, how about an emerald? It had enough bluish-mint glow to it, and with a proper stone, the ring should look stunning. I also think that a sapphire will look good in it.

I'd LOVE to do a sapphire-I'm just worried it won't look right somehow. I don't know why.

You know what I think? Someone has mentioned Welo opal. But I just imagined how it may look with a pinkish pear pearl in it... Now, I do not know much about pearl, how easy it is to get one of appropriate measurements, or whether it is easy to set a pearl in such a setting... sorry. They come in different shapes, so there might be a solution. But in general, a pinkish pearl in a rose gold setting would look stunning to me. Sorry if my advice is impractical - I am just approaching pearls...

Whatever colour you end up deciding on, do not pick a stone that is darker in tone than a medium light or it might end up almost blacking out in the setting which looks to be totally enclosed allowing only light to come in from the top. Also, look for stones that have little or no extinction to begin with.

that's helpful, thank you. it doesn't get a ton of light-here's a shot from behind.

Have you talked with anyone, professional jeweler, about taking out the ruby and replacing the center stone in that ring? It's my understanding that bezels don't have much room for error. I'd be afraid something would go wrong and a stone could be broken in the process of setting or removing. There are a very limited number of people that I'd trust to do that. :?:

I'd definitely stick with a light to medium light shade. Rose and green are almost always a good combo. :lickout:

the only person who will touch this ring is David at DBL! No worries there. He may well have to source the stone as well so that it fits, but I don't know what to tell him at this point. I'm still fairly certain I want colored, but a diamond is in the mix. It will come down to finances too!

Here's a photo with it holding a diamond.

I've just come across a tsavorite garnet that I think would fit....that would be a lovely sparkly stone to have in there.

I really wish I knew more about stuff like this. It's so hard to know if things are a good price or not when you don't have a great frame of reference.
