heard any weird ones ?
im not superstitious :lol-2:
id love an opal but i kind of buy into the noncence it should be one's birthstone or it should be a gift
i know that's silly

Queen Alexandra (the present Queen's great grandmother). had the opals in Queen Victoria's oriental circlet (designed by Prince Albert) replaced with rubies because she thought they were bad luck

A lot of S Asians (I think it’s a concept mostly in Hinduism/Buddhism) believe that blue sapphire is unlucky because it’s a sign of Saturn, so unless you’re born under the sign of Saturn you shouldn’t wear blue sapphire. Saturn is the most controversial and capricious deity. The only exception to this is if you wear a piece of navratan jewelry, which contains the 9 most “important high stones” - stones signifying the sun, moon and planets (FYI, the stones are ruby, pearl, red coral, emerald, yellow sapphire, diamond, blue sapphire, hessonite and cat’s eye). Some extend this advice to cover all blue stones, others only have issues with blue sapphires specifically. This is why it can be harder to find blue sapphire jewelry around there compared to other stones (and even other colours of sapphire - yellow sapphire for example is still easy to find).

I guess the entire concept of navratan jewelry is also a belief or superstition, so I’ll elaborate on that as well. These aforementioned nine stones (navratan means nine gems in Sanskrit) are considered very powerful and auspicious when worn in combination, providing good luck to the wearer and ensuring that the planets will watch over them. The only cardinal rule for navratan jewelry is that the ruby should always be in the centre since it signifies the sun and all the planets revolve around the sun (ofc people do get jewelry as per personal taste but that’s supposed to be the traditional way). Each stone of the 9 has its own special meaning and purpose btw - emerald for better mental acuity, diamond for grace and artistic ability, ruby for vitality and leadership, pearl for mental strength etc.

I’m not superstitious inasmuch as it wouldn’t bother me to buy a preloved ring from a broken engagement. I don’t believe an inanimate object carries any kind of ‘bad karma’.

After I lost my mum's Imperial Jade centre stone from a ring that she loaned to me during one drunken work function, her immediate reaction was that, the jade probably averted something bad that was about to happen to me.

DK :))

For the ruby to be in the centre, then it has to be a pendant? Or a ring? Awww, and I just bought another blue-blue sapphire. Oops.

How interesting.

I have this jadeite bangle that is not the best looking green of all my bangles, but every time I wear it, very good things happen. Maybe it's the translucency of the bangle. It is so clear that the green bits look like mists floating through in certain lighting. And that clears up my mind and calms me down as I make decisions.

I tend to feel though, that the colours of my jewellery are so wonderful, they keep me from being distracted by many other things, so I work better and am more efficient at what I do. I stop and look at my rings, and then carry on working. That jadeite bangle, I wear for clarity of thought, even if I have many lovely bracelets and bangles to choose from. I don't really believe in the superstition but I do like the bangle for its comfort factor.

Interesting topic! My mum has always spoken of opals as being unlucky, indeed she went as far as replacing an opal in an inherited ring with a different stone! She also claims emeralds are not to be worn unless they are your birthstone. No idea where this all comes from. Personally, I don’t care.

I have a few superstitions (or as my dh refers to them as stupidstitions lol) but none of them involve jewelry.

Though I do think you can get positive energy from a piece. For example I’m so happy @Austina has Bella because that’s one positive energy piece imo.

But as for negative energy I don’t think that transfers. So if a piece has negative energy from one person and another takes it she/he can easily make that a positive because the energy comes from you. If that makes sense.

You can also have a line necklace where you have 4 stones on the left, then the ruby, then the other 4 stones, and if your piece is long, you can fill up the gaps in the middle with other gems or beads or gold (even accent versions of the gems already in the piece), or repeat the 9 gem pattern, as long as ruby is in the centre of the collection or 9. When it’s a circular piece (pendant or ring), it’s shaped like a flower almost (ruby as the centre and 8 stones surrounding it like a circle). I’m not particularly superstitious, but I do find all of this very interesting.

I do kinda believe though that jewelry pieces can have good or bad energy, sounds like your jadeite bangle brings you good things :)

Interesting topic! I didn‘t know about opals for example. I am not too superstitious but believe, that some stones just match better than others for a person. So I have lovely stones or pieces that I never really get too attached too for whatever reason and others that are my happy stones and it makes me feel good when wearing them.

Since I'm a child of the 60s, I remember the superstition about opals. I've worn an opal ring, and loved it. Since I always buy vintage everything, I really don't have superstitions about the provenance of any piece. There have been issues with furniture where I'd look at a piece and immediately feel like it wasn't "right" in an offputting way. Same with mirrors. Just my personal feelings. I wish I had a nice Jade piece, I've always wanted one and thought maybe if a certain stone is supposed to bring good luck, then I should probably try it.

Yes, there definitely was a superstition that Opals were bad luck. Not sure how or why that come about but in my view, excellent, more Opals for me to buy!
There is a whole industry in selling crystals for positive healing / positive energy. I don’t believe in that myself but I’m happy for others if they feel that certain crystals bring them better health or luck.
I do however associate positive energy with my jewellery. It certainly brings me joy to wear and admire its beauty. I find it soothing and distracting if stressed to admire rainbow sparkles or look at the changing colours and patterns in opal.
And as for bad ju ju with preowned pieces, nah, no such thing. If there was Im sure that such pieces just need a loving home, mine, to be beautiful and joyful again.

My mother’s birth stone is opal so I know about the opal superstitions. Not sure if I believe in them, but I haven’t ever wanted an opal enough to risk it

I tend to believe that jewelry (and anything really) has the meaning and power we give it. So if you believe that something is good luck, bad luck, or neither, you’re right!

im going to fish out Aunty Neeta's jade braclete and start wearing it !

i don't buy into the whole crystal thing but i quite love rose quartz and would love a pretty piece - but most of the pieces i see here are few and far bwtween, too pale in colour and in ugly cheap looking setting
i just love the whole idea of calming and healing and i read its good to ward off bad dreams
one day im going to make a mobile and hang it above the bed
and have a really lovelly ring made

i have some Whitby jet pieces but im a bit weird about it because it was historically mourning jewlery
i really love amethyst with pearls but feel the same way

its just stupid like Missy's Greg says but when i was a kid my best freind's mum was way superstitious
no lilac or wattle in the house
if you came in one door you had to sit down before going out the other door

This article mentions why:

That Spanish opal definitely sounds like bad luck to me. Was curious what the cursed opal looks like and I’ve tried searching for a pic in the past but apparently it’s lost.

Personally I wear a jadeite bangle as it makes me feel better. Ward off evil etc.
