Parents= male clothes should be in separate washes to females.
partner= no shoes on tables

there are others that i know of but i dont adopt- like dont walk on cracks, dont wash hair/ cut nails in the 2week chinese new year celebrations.
walking under ladder was supposedly bad luck- to me it is a hazard so i dont do it, now. i did it once as a kid and mum told me off. that day i failed a test! hmmmm... some truth????? hehehehe

any others out there?

Of I cannot remember them now and I know so many. ::)
Don't wear someone else's shoes.
Don't say something bad health wise as in " I think I might have fill in the blank" or you might get it.

Ugh I cannot think of any others but I know a lot more!! I will post them if I remember.

ETA: just called my mom and all she could think of was don't put your hat on the bed...but she cannot remember why lol

My Grandmother always said not to put your purse on the floor because it'll make you go broke. This is one thing I absolutely DO NOT do and if someone moves my bag to the floor, I tend to freak a bit lol...more for the fact that it is dirty, than the broke business, but I'm not trying to jinx anything!

Growing up my brothers and I always raised our feet when in a car and driving over railroad tracks.

I don't know if this qualifies but it's definitely a quirk passed down. In my family we save boxes because you never know when you'll need a box. Packing cartons, shoe boxes, jewelry boxes...someday you might absolutely have to use one. My mother did it; my sister does it & I have a small closet full of them. Naturally when I do need a box, I don't have the right size.

Its bad luck to put your shoes on the table.
If you see a white horse, you must cross your fingers until you see a black horse.
Ears burn when people are talking about you - left for love, right for spite.
If you spill salt, throw some over your left shoulder to ward off bad luck.
Knock on wood when you say something you hope will not come true.
Cut your nails or play cards on a Sunday and 'the devil will get you!'.

My paternal grandparents are from Ireland, and Scotland - both very superstitious! Gosh forbid we tried to play cards on Sunday!

Old Wives' Tales have been a sore subject for me ever since I went blind.

Ha! I never heard that one, but I never EVER put my bag on the floor because it's gross, and when I see other people do it, I freak out inside! :?

My mom always says never open an umbrella indoors because it means someone will die, and also don't walk under a ladder but I can't remember what she thinks that means. My dad isn't superstitious, but he did warn me once when I was in college to steer clear of ouija boards. He was right about that one.

Oh, man. It's such a long, strange story. Briefly: I lived in a dorm my freshman year of college, and some of the girls thought it'd be fun to play with a ouija board someone had. It turned into a bunch of young women becoming somewhat obsessed, trying to call friends of theirs who died, or loved ones, and it went on for a week straight. Then one night one of the girls was playing with it by herself and "allegedly" became possessed. I didn't witness that. But after Christmas break that semester, 9 girls from our floor did not return to school, and almost all of them were in good academic standing. It seriously was some freaky sh!t. I'm still in contact with two girls from that floor who were part of the whole thing. We still talk sometimes about what went down. I have always been very skeptical of paranormal activity/supernatural things, but this ordeal still weirds me out when I think about it. I'm leaving out details because I don't want to be known as the crazy lady of PS. I have never, and will never mess with a ouija board again, though. My dad didn't warn me until after I told him about my experience. Knowing he believed me is enough.

Re: superstitions/ old wives tales you inherit from your ...

Cool.
What the human mind is capable of is so amazing!!!

The inventors of the ouija board knew that some humans will always be superstitious, and cashed in on that. :appl:

Re: superstitions/ old wives tales you inherit from your ...

My grandmother used to make fun of her mother, who believed that eating cauliflower gave you brain tumors.

I guess cause it looks like brains?

I dunno, the taste was enough to keep away from that stuff. . .

QUESTION! :wavey: :wavey:

gregchange35, is this only for inherited old wives' tales, or it is also for crazy stuff we picked up on our own ?
