Tacori or Custom Setting

Hi Folks,

I have waited a long time to get an engagement ring (5 year anniversary gift) and I have purchased a 1.64ct Rd diamond (F, VS2,Ideal)-- it's my dream stone and it makes me happy every time I look at it. I want to do an engagement ring that is something that really highlights the stone but is also sentimental.

I am deciding between two options-- a Tacori ring that I absolutely love 2516Rd and a custom ring that combines a lot of elements that I like from a variety of rings and incorporates the diamonds from my original "engagement ring" (a thin eternity band.)

I am torn-- I really love the tacori and have tried it on multiple times. I feel like the finger view is absolutely incredible I know exactly what I am getting. . .and would be very pleased. However, the custom ring is one of a kind and would reflect my history with my hubby.

What are people's thoughts? I could really use some help here! Thanks guys!

They are both very pretty! Would the Tacori fit your stone as good? Is price a huge difference/factor? What is the significance with the custom one...what elements in it? I truly think it's a toss up!

If you go the custom route, do you have a vendor that you trust can complete the work to the standard you're expecting? That will be key...you don't want to end up with a setting that you're unhappy with because of poor execution. Having said that, I like the idea of going custom because it will be a one of a kind piece. I have a Tacori and I love it, I love looking at the cut outs along the side view and it does feel like a high quality piece. I can see why you're torn. Between the two designs, I prefer the Tacori a bit more because of the architecture of the cutouts and the design is a bit simpler. The custom piece has a lot going on with the split shank, side stones, double pave halo BUT you have a good sized centre stone which should be able to hold its own in that setting. And Tacori can be very expensive...I feel for you, it's a tough decision.

I feel similarly-- I think the Tacori is amazing--it's a great blend of vintage and modern. It also looks really nice with my wedding band-- which I plan to wear on my right hand.

I think it's the unknown that I am concerned with-- I know the Tacori will look great and will be (hopefully) well executed. I saw the exact ring with a similar size stone and it looked great on my hand. I bet the custom one will look great too- I just don't know for sure.

The vendor is local to me and I have heard good things. Price is about the same-- but I am using many of my own diamonds for the custom piece. If I don't go that route, then I would keep my engagement ring as a fun fashion ring or pass it down to my daughter as she gets older.

I would talk to your vendor, ask to see a portfolio of work and compare his/her style of work to what you want. Your custom job is requires some fine detail with the pave, if you want to add milgraining or filigree as well, make sure that you see example from the vendor. Also, do a pricescope search for pave work, there are some great threads with good and bad examples. I can't do a search for you right now but I'm sure someone will chime in with some previous threads.

You may want to move this thread to the rocky talky subforum which is where ppl post questions such as yours. This forum is more for showing finished pieces of work. Just hit the report concern button at the top of your thread. This should get more people to respond to your questions.

Ok....I'll say it...I really like the custom better!!! I love the halo and pave work and the marquies!!!!

+1 :D

I like the custom ring better, but I'd like it even better with just one halo instead of the double. In doing so, your diamond would be more of the focus, and a single row of diamonds around it would look so delicate and pretty.

I like the custom better too. It just seems to flow better. For some reason that type of halo pave head on the tacori doesn't
look like it goes with the shank. Just seems like a mismatch to me.

If you're going custom though you need to find someone who specializes in doing pave work.

I like the custom design, but I also very much prefer a single halo.

I find the tacori more delicate and beautiful because of the love architecture, The custom ring is a real bling fest so it depends on what you want. Are you a one ring type person? If you only wear one ring all the time, then maybe the custom route is for you as it incorporates your original e-ring and other styles you like. Me, I change up my rings all the time, so even my e-ring has to join the queue, and I realize I almost never wear my wedding band as its too plain
