Tale of the Solitaire to Three Stone Ring Journey, Featuring a 3 CT OEC

Back to the FCD…

I gravitate towards old cuts and old settings and platinum, although I can’t always find it. But I got very lucky and found a mounting that ticked all of my boxes and fit the .75 white diamond on eBay. 7F3FB72F-7E1D-43BA-8D6C-3768B47D78BE.png

Finally, I got to pick her up a week ago. I’m very pleased with the low profile and how wearable this ring is, not moving from side to side. I love the surprising flashes of color! It’s very overcast here today, but I didn’t want to make you wait for pictures.E7B8F5E0-4BA7-4DCE-89BA-2457AB8D4709.jpeg

I must have one or two…how lovely are these silky stones. Sapphires, spinels and diamonds, oh my! Happily searching away, I found a fancy white diamond with blue and orange flashes on Etsy with a GIA cert.

Wow this diamond is so interesting!

On the GIA cert it says I3 clarity but only shows a knot.

Forgive my ignorance, but do you know if it’s this knot that causes the milkiness or another factor? And is it graded I3 because of the knot itself or the silk?

You ask excellent questions! Here is the GIA definition of a knot:
Knot
A white or transparent diamond crystal that extends to the surface after fashioning.

Doesn’t sound like a good thing to have, does it? Hope some PSer more knowledgeable than I will chime in.

”I” clarity sometimes —> white when the clarity is based on clouds or, in this case, internal training.

Go to James Allen and search for “I1” diamonds and you will see some that have no visible inclusions but are overall milky.

The GIA report says that the clarity is based on “internal graining” so most likely it’s the internal graining that’s making the diamond opaque.

Hallo @Mrsz1ppy -

I had thought you were planning on returning your original diamond to TRR. What made you change your mind? It sounded by far the best deal.

Hi there! The stone was unmounted for GIA, and I had previously sized the platinum setting from a size 3 to an 8. I would have had to return it to original condition, and I couldn’t replace the stone for the price, due to the 2 years I had owned it and the way the market had changed. I certainly didn’t want TRR to profit from their ‘mistake’ either. So I decided to use it for a 3 stone ring instead of returning it.

I think I love her!

GIA stats on side stones—I was wrong. 1.13 recut/polished to 1.12, J VS2; 1.14 recut/polished to 1.13 J SI1image.jpg

Here she is. I only notice the color difference, M is center, J for side stones when I look at the ring from the side. Face up, the M goes with the Js. 35AA30D5-BB79-448E-ADEE-A49C875D8BFD.jpeg
