Talk to me about earring weight

Someone mentioned in another post that a design she was trying to create was too heavy in the end. I fell in love with a 3 stone dangling earring, which sadly has sold. I tried it on at the time and don't recall feeling like it was overly heavy but now I am starting to wonder if I should pay more attention to this before embarking on a matching stone search.

The original design has a .75, .45, and .35 old mine cut stone per side. That said I am not beholden to those weights, I wish I had had the sizes in MM since OMCs vary so widely and the proportions of this pair were what drew me to them ( well that and they were just so wearable and beautiful.) Short of buying all the stones, which will be more of a quest than a shopping trip, is there anyway I figure out if these would be uncomfortable to wear?

And speaking of a quest, I am following the suggestions in the Old Mine necklace thread for vendors but maybe should try and find something pre-made to try on, if you have any ideas who carries this look I am all ears (no pun intended)

The proper backings can help with the weight

BlingDots!

You stick them on the back of the ear, then poke the earring post/hook through. They distribute the weight across the entire lobe (vs. pinpoint pressure at your piercing).

They're really easy to use and stick "right" - they stay nice and sticky through rain, but they come off in the shower. Still too much work for me for every day, but for occasional-use earrings they're wonderful ::)

Bending the earwire forward more than usual - see this www, may be enough even for heavy earrings [a few grams/ear]; the model drop seem to be made this way. Even this might not be necessary.

Everyone has a different tolerance for weight re the ears. I can tolerate a max of 2.5 grams per ear but definitely prefer 2 grams or less per ear if possible. I find no matter the backing I prefer lighter weight earrings for my sensitive earlobes. I also prefer more diamonds and less metal and that helps make it lighter. :)

My inspiration eye candy.

The combined weight or your diamonds would be just 0.3grams (with a carat weighing 0.2grams) so the weight will really come from the metal. I'd go for gold over platinum, or perhaps even palladium, and ask them to be made as delicate as possible.

Personally I don't like any weight in my ears at all so don't wear earrings. It's so personal. You could buy a few cheapies on Amazon, weigh them and try them out, to find your own weight tolerance.

Thank you all! @MillieLou genius, I was searching for weights online and getting myself to totally confused. I have some costume stuff I will weight (on the ktichen scale when the hubs isn't looking) and test it out.

@yssie thank you, seems like a doable solution

@AV_ I figure the hooks make a huge difference.

@missy I LOVE your collection.

I am hoping to go with as little metal as possible, gold is fine by me, just a wire wrap, since collecting 6 stones is surely going to mean some serious wonk, which I am 100% in favor of.

@CSpan If I had a balance capable to measure carats / fractions of a gram in the house, I'd know how heavy my studs can be (one pair of stone-less dome type, has reached the limit, but I could stand bigger ones - they have become my day in/day out habit, 'grown on me'.) Thinking! [OK, the farmacist has it, but will I dare? The village jeweler has not opened. ... but I do have a century old science balance somewhere .) Fun!]

My husband bought a fairly inexpensive scale for tea, yes we are those people who weigh not measure our tea. It has paid dividends lemme tell you. postage scale?
