tanzanite earrings

I have a pair of Tanzanite studs with 2 appraisals from different sources. The 1st is $1750 replacement value and the 2nd is $3600 retail which is $1800 to replace.

2.10 ctw 14k w/g studs blue violet, moderate to strong vvs clarity stored safely and never worn

I'm wondering what these might be worth today as the appraisals are 4 years old.

I found a pair on ebay, 1.3 ctw for $839. it says aaa with moderate inclusions.That seems high to me after what I've read on here.

'I need to sell due to health reasons but not sure what to ask for quick sale, if there is such a thing.

John - unfortunately the re-sale market is low. Tanzanite is graded by colour and the price can vary considerably just because of the colour alone. My suggestion is that you look on various jewellery selling websites (where members of the public can list their items for sale - not Ebay) which should give you an indication of the sort of price you can command. Unfortunately you need to totally forget the replacement valuations as these bear no relation to the worth they are on the second hand market (which is much lower).

Also, please bear in mind that people may shy away from second hand earrings (for health reasons). As they are Tanzanites you can't put them in a sonic cleaner which again may be off-putting to some.

When it comes to coloured gemstones, colour is what sets the price. Clarity has little bearing as long as it is eye clean. The size you listed is easy to procure. At this point, I'd toss out the appraisals since these are generally inflated and the secondhand market is quite poor. I am sorry to not be able to share more encouraging news. I suggest following LD's suggestion of seeing what the current pricing is online for tanzanites similar to yours and go from there, with a discount.

Hi John, I'm sorry to hear about your health problems. Selling Tanzanite, as with all gemstones is really a function of where and how you sell and this will dictate the price. Appraisals are usually at retail replacement value so may not be of much help to you especially if you are looking to sell to the trade as they are going to want to pay wholesale prices which are much lower obviously. You might try some of the online auction sites to try and get closer to your retail price.

Secondly, you may want to look around online and try and compare the quality of your stones to ones you see for sale in the market currently to get an idea of where you should be positioning. A Google search for "Tanzanite" will give you alot to choose from. Are your stones very deep colors? Color is the most important value factor in Tanzanite, as with all colored stones so will play a large part in your valuation. You might want to try this site to learn more about Tanzanite grading : http://www.lapigems.com/tanzanite.asp It has a whole section on Tanzanite education in the left hand column which may be of help to you. They also sell stones of deep colors so may be useful in gauging prices. Also the Tanzanite Foundation has a Quality scale which shows colors and clarities.
