Oh, those are amazing - Mike, thank you, both for the great examples, and for going to the trouble of hunting them down and putting them up!

Just a drive-by post from me (baby's had his first cold these last few days, and I'm back at work tomorrow, eep), but thanks to all of you for the advice and support - progress is being made, more substantive post tomorrow!

No problem Circe, I hope they help.

Circe!! Any updates?

Re: Tattoo aficionados - tips on making a tattoo "jewel-like

Yes Circe, how's it going? I'm following this with interest. I have a smallish black and grey (thanks for the terminology Mike :) and for the sterling advice and illustrations )between the shoulder blades and I'm tempted by the idea of another monochrome on the foot. So the foot talk is useful to know.
I didn't find the back one too painful but it is not that big and the lines not too thick so perhaps that's why. The lovely Lalique is a different proposition and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this evolves :)

Re: Tattoo aficionados - tips on making a tattoo "jewel-like

i, too, would like an update!
have put off the foot tattoo i was considering but have researched tattoo artists. been stopping women on the street/in the store when i see one with well done tattoo even if its not the "style" i want.

Re: Tattoo aficionados - tips on making a tattoo "jewel-like

The last artist I posted is currently the front-runner: I ran into a woman with an amazing chest-piece, and coincidentally enough, when I asked her about it (great minds, MoZo!), she sang her praises long and loud. I figure that while you have to trust an artist a lot for ANY tattoo, you have to REALLY trust them for a chestpiece that comes up to the collarbone, KWIM? I don't know if I would have trusted Lalique himself for that. :cheeky:

Of course, that said, have I found the time to go out to her studio in Brooklyn? NO. I am hoping that once things calm down a little (my term is over, but I have a couple of journal pieces due), I can make the schlep. I will keep you all unpdated if there's any movement, promise - I'm flattered you remembered! It just felt sort of embarrassing to be updating, all "Still not king," y'know? :rodent:

Re: Tattoo aficionados - tips on making a tattoo "jewel-like

part of my educations is "lingo".....i have recently learned that a lower back tattoo is refered to as a "tramp stamp". why? because if it is to be seen by the public at large more revealing clothing is worn in public and hence the label of tramp.

sigh.

personally, if i wanted one in that area i'd get it. the only time i'm going to see it is in the mirror but if it makes me happy to do that, it would make me happy to do that. i certainly wouldn't be worried about the labels others feel necessary to put on such a work of art as you're contemplating, Circe. [i do not have the body that would be wearing revealing clothing!!!]

Re: Tattoo aficionados - tips on making a tattoo "jewel-like

Heh - I have heard that phrase before, and it's always gotten my feminist hackles up. I had my tattoo there for perfectly logical reasons - like the fact that it COULD NOT be seen in my normal business clothing, the fact that it would be one of the portions of my anatomy least affected by time, and, given that I was kind of woo-woo at the time, the fact that it's the location of my third chakra (I know, I know!). The idea that any and every decision I make is based on the male gaze - pffft. Self-important much, fellas?

Bring on the Man Repeller, I say. :D

Re: Tattoo aficionados - tips on making a tattoo "jewel-like

agree completely with you , Circe!
i heard the phrase from a 35 year old woman......who has tattoos but when she told her dad that she was getting one in the small of the back, he told it was a tramp stamp. now i gotta say: this young woman i cannot imagine wearing revealing clothing at all! and she let his labeling stop her! good grief: this 2012, not 1812!

Re: Tattoo aficionados - tips on making a tattoo "jewel-like

Heh - when I was 19 and wanted my tattoo, my folks (who are from Russia) told me only ex-cons and prostitutes had tattoos, and is that what I wanted people to think of me?!?

Needles to say, I didn't listen to them ... but the concealable location of the tat did make my life easier! They didn't find out about it until the day I graduated from my MA program, when I leaned over a little too far and my shirt rode up. Happily, they were so overjoyed by the occasion that they let the discovery go. :)

At the end of the day, people need to own their bodies and have the courage of their convictions. A tattoo is a little thing to pin it on, but ... me, I reject the idea that women's sexuality is icky or demeaning or that mine in particular is dictated by anybody else. So I rock my non-trampy lower back tat, and look forward to expanding it.

i think it will be gorgeous! and i do wish you'd get that appointment made, get it done and healed, so you can let us see what it looks like!

my parents were aghast that i had two toe rings on one toe! the horror! my mother then asked if i had any other body ornamentation i cared to share.....other than my pierced ears there was nothing to share at that point. imagine her horror when i show up with that foot tattoo! she'll be 88 in september and i do hope the shock won't be too much....however, i would have to get my act into gear and make a final decision re design and artists, wouldn't i?!

i've actually toyed with a more "jewel" like design because yours is so lovely.

Awesome that you've narrowed it down to a promising designer - please do update us when you go down!

Mine are high enough on my hip that you can only see them if I'm in a swimsuit. My family (and probably DH's) would have quite a bit to say if they knew, so... I just wear shorts over bikini bottoms.

I'm thinking of getting one covered too - the drama masks that I felt were so cleverly poignant at 18 aren't nearly so evocative (or provocative) several years later. The other - the one I thought about and spent months drawing on myself - I'm still very happy with. Funny how that works

Circe - What did you end up doing?
I had my tattoo removed that was in the same spot...well its nearly gone anyway.
More painful to remove then to get...which is why when I thought about getting another tattoo, I ended up with a piercing instead. Another excuse for jewelry I guess. :)

The interesting thing about this particular design is that I've found two pics of it that are sufficiently different in coloration that I wonder if it was made twice and enameled with slight variations ... and the more vibrant image that I'm using as a reference does look more "flattened." I'm figuring the finished product will split the difference since the human back is more curved than flat ... but I definitely want to track down as many iterations as possible before I commit to anything. Attaching pics below ....

Im thinking that the photos are of the same piece but under different lighting conditions and background. The one on the black background looks White light lit against a solid black background, the other photo is without a solid background and is front and rear lit with warmer tone lighting.
