Which method do you guys prefer? Plan on getting it so the pictures look prettier.

I just want to warn you that my best friend had the zoom whitening done at the Dentist''s office and she was in agony for days. Still don''t know what went wrong, but boy was she in extreme pain.

I prefer the cheapo Crest strips method...I did them for the 2 weeks before the wedding, the strongest ones they had....the ones that were 1 weekers I think...

They did a great job and it was only like $50.00 for 2 boxes. Of course it's not as easy as doing the dentist 2 hour appt but I didn't want to spend $300 right before my wedding on TEETH!

One note is that I had done the 2 weeker ones in the past and they were fine, but the 1 week more concentrated ones seemed to make my teeth a bit more sensitive for an hour or two after I wore them....so it was definitely stronger stuff. Just an FYI!

I have veneers/bonding on my upper row and they are the whitest the guy could possibly get. I use Go Smile (the actual whitening kit, not the maintenance) to keep them as white as possible in the meantime and to brighten my bottom row. I drink too much sodie so I keep staining them but for what I need, it works great.

My sister used the whitestrips and shes got freakishly white ross gellar teeth and they glow and it freaks me out.

I used the crest white strips. I absolutely love them. I''m a big time coffee drinker and I could tell a major difference after the first week.

Ame- where do you get that Go Smile?

I used the Night White Excel 2 system. It cost about $300, and included the dental visits to get the mold, and then to have the trays shaped, and then for me to go back again because they weren''t cut quite right the first time. That was a bit obnoxious, going back three times. I had to use them for 14 days, and my teeth did hurt afterwards, and oddly, I became super sensitive to sound. That went away quickly. The results are incredible, my teeth are movie star white, and have stayed that way for three years. I''ve done one night of whitening maybe three times in the three years. The stuff tastes gross, and sleeping with the trays in can be irritating, but the results are great.

kaleigh...most likely, your friend was sensitive to the whitening process and getting totally "zapped" in one day was more than her teeth could handle!

I also use Crest White Strips (the 1 week type) and they work well...about by the 3rd day, my teeth start to get sensitive too and I have to drop to 1x/day (rather than 2x/day)...it extended the whitening process, but at least I''m not in agony....

My Dentist told me that there are no long term studies on the effects of laser whitening.
It could be safe. It could also not be safe.
During the process they use highly caustic chemicals, and a good deal of heat.
If you raise the temperature of the nerve of a tooth, even a few degrees, you can risk sending the nerve into a downward spiral - ending in the death of the nerve. That means root canals, and other horrors.

(That'w why it's so important to use water when drilling teeth. - To keep them cool.)

She also said that her patients have complained of pain - And like Kaleigh said pain for days. Many said if they knew how painful the process was they never would have gone through with it.

She suggested that I stick with whitening strips and the like. If I wanted something more serious, many dentists can make a custom bleaching tray for use with a special bleaching agent.

A bunch of my girlfriends and I had this same discussion the other day! Every single person we''ve talked to says that the Zoom just about killed them because it was so painful! Apparently, this is downplayed beforehand...and they don''t warn you that it''s going to be painful!

I did the excel with the molds. It worked well, and my teeth were sensitive by the end of the 2 weeks though! And, every 3-4 months, I put them in for a night and it touches them right up! Too much coffee I suppose! Darn starbucks addiciton...

Why dont you just paint TipEx onto your teeth... godda be cheaper? What is it? $1 a pot.

My sis is a dentist... but she''s currently on holiday in Florida... so will ask her what she recommends when she gets back.

I''ve also used the Excel gel and teeth molds. My teeth became too sensitive and painful half way through the treatment, so I stopped using it every night and went to 1-2 hours every other night. My teeth definitely look whiter, although they don''t look perfectly bright white (which is a good thing, I guess).

I forget what it''s called exactly but it''s Crest and instead of the clear strip that fits over your teeth it''s the paint brush and tube. Do Not Buy That.

You are supposed to dry your teeth after brushing and then the paste sticks to your teeth and it comes right off in the morning. The problem is once your teeth are dry the stuff adheres but as your mouth is wide open to apply to more teeth you start salivating. Then your teeth aren''t dry and the stuff never sticks. It''s very hard to apply correctly.

I got one kit at Sephora, and my sister took all the maintenance vials, I also got one through GoSmile.com

HI:

Glad someone asked this, as I''ve been curious. After using the White Strips for a week straight, my teeth were sensitive so I had to go to an alternative day schedule. But my result was not as good as my GF who had used the dental trays--her teeth were beautiful (I drink red wine+++, she doesn''t drink anything not even coffee). Had a student come to clinical once who''d fallen asleep with the WS on her teeth (after sh''ed been using them for two weeks), and she was quite uncomfortable the whole day...

Hubby was offered a "2 for 1" at the Dentist the other day--Dentist has just bought the Zoom and is trialing it, hence the deal. I''ve heard of the pain, so I don''t think so. I want to try that Go-Smile. How much is that product?

cheers--Sharon

Done the ZOOM inoffice - the gel got onto my lip and I ended up doing only 15 mins instead of 45 mins cuz it burned a pea sized burn blister on my lip which swelled up to 3x the normal size. The whole prep process was so claustrophobic (your entire mouth is wrapped in gauze - even your tongue), I didn''t want to repeat it again. Teeth did get about 2 shades whiter. Tried the inhome trays which did little for me though. The whiteness lasted about 6 months.

I''ve been looking at getting something done again, been hearing mixed reviews for Go-smile when I stumbled upon this http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=135279 Don''t laugh, but I am actually considering trying this! It actually seems to make sense.

Hope you find something that works for you.

I think the ***GoSMILE Brilliant Kit*** is 110, that comes with a lot, JUST the whitening vials is $75 for a pack of 30. Sephora also sells it but no cheaper.

Just to add my friend''s teeth are very white and she is no longer in pain, but the pain lasted for days. I have to say her teeth are very white. She must have been extremely sensitive to the product. I had my top teeth bonded and after that my teeth became extremely sensitive.

It makes your teeth extremely sensitive for about a week. I had it done and I almost died. I couldn''t drive with the window open because of the air blowing by my teeth!!

Thanks for all the responses. Yeesh, I gotta really think about this.

I would try the crest stuff first and see how it goes. It hurts my teeth just thinking about it.

if you are unsure, i would do the crest 2 week strips at first (i agree with the other person who said that paintontheteeth stuff is gross, i HATED it and it all got stuck to my lips)....

see how those work, how sensitive your teeth are etc.

if you want more power, try the 1 week more concentrated strips, which is where i found my teeth getting sensitive after the 3rd day...and i started cutting back to 1ce a day also and then every other day...

in the end the results were still fantastic even though i didnt follow the directions to the T, due to the sensitivity..but i didn''t need freakish white teeth anyway...just wanted a bit of a touch up.

i also agree those dentist laser things freak me out! i prefer the at-home cheaper method ...

I had Zoom whitening and had trays made for the maintenance touch ups. Zoom didn''t bother me at all and I think it was due to my dentist using some solution before and after Zoom. She knew how sensitive my teeth are and I will have to ask to find out what they did. My teeth are extremely white and it has lasted with touch ups of Life Like 30% for the trays. I think the trays work just as well as zoom, they just take longer.

I did a teeth whitening with the dentist (not the laser one), but where they make a mold for your teeth, and then you have an overnight gel. I was supposed to wear it for a week but I only wore it for 4 nights, because my teeth ached SO MUCH! The results were incredible, eventhough I didn''t go through the whole treatment.

Whoa! I read that whole thread, and . . . wow! I think I''m going to try this!

My question is what if you don''t have sensitive teeth and only find out that you do once you get this treatment done in the dentists office??

I''ve been a dental hygenist for 19 years now so I hope ya''ll don''t mind a little extra info:

I just wanted to answer the sensitivity question: It is temporary and should go away. Usually in less than a week but sometimes up to four weeks.

The active ingredient in all of the methods described above (other than the veneers) is carbamide peroxide. It varies in concentration from 8% to 30% (as used in the Zoom and Bright Smile methods) My office doesn''t use the Zoom or Bright Smile methods as my boss has concerns about its long term safety. Preliminary studies have not shown any ill effects other than the temporary tooth sensitivity. I think Mara was quoting the price for in office bleaching trays when she estimated $300 for the Zoom (2 hour method). The last price quote I got from a rep for Zoom was about $700-800. That one shot whitening comes at a hefty price and none is covered by dental insurance. At my office we do the custom tray method. We use Colgate Platinum Overnight kits. We make impressions of the teeth and then fabricate custom flexible trays to but the bleach in. It can be worn anywhere from 2 hours to overnight daily for about 2 weeks. Our office charges $175 per arch or $300 if both arches are done at the same time. It is much more effective than the white strips and gives more even coverage. Most people need at least 2 boxes of the White Strips to get satisfactory results.

Here''s a tip for those who are about to begin bleaching: Use Sensodyne toothpaste for 2 weeks before, and during bleaching 3X a day to eliminate or cut down on tooth sensitivity.

Thanks Pearcrazy,
That''s very good advice!!!

Thanks pearcrazy for the info! Now it really seems to me that the Auro ear drops with 6.5% carbamide peroxide should work with less sensitivity - what do you think about that? The other ingredient in it is supposed to be an inert one that doesn''t have any effect on teeth.... Sounds crazy still but at $7 a bottle - it''s worth a try?

Or better yet-- invest 45 cents in a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide. It''s slow but it''ll work if you have lots of patience!!

I did Brite Smile and it worked...but you can see where the glue from my braces where in pictures, not in life mostly but in pictures when my buddies and e-mail stuff you can see the difference. Dont know if you have had them. Also since these things dont last more then about 6-12 think about if you really want to spend 600$ I was shocked when I found out how expensive it was. (It was a gift for me.)
