man that regency ring is amazing!

Another symbolic aspect of emeralds is that each emerald is different and unique, just like each relationship is.

Hi, All..

When Velourial started this thread, I was literally pacing the floor awaiting delivery of THIS from Nelson Rarities...

It arrived, and needless to say, there was NO WAY it was going back! I''m SO SO SO THRILLED!

Here''s a close up: The ring is vintage 1920, plat. Emerald: 1.83cts, Dias: 2.7ctstw.
The emerald is pure green, not really bluish as the pic suggests. According to NR, it has had little or no oil treatment...

Can you imagine how BLOWN AWAY I was when I opened the box???

Here''s a profile shot...the stones are set low, and the concave curve makes it incredibly comfortable to wear...

These baguettes on the sides are lovely, too...too bad you can''t even see them when the ring is on!

. I''ll go flog myself and return in a better frame of mind.

P.S. Hand shots, pretty please, when you have time.

I really MUST come to the Colored Stones forum more regularly! Lucky for me the emerald is my birthstone. I have a couple of pieces of emerald jewlery but they were gifts and are not really my taste. I have been looking for a few months for a nice emerald ring to purchase. Now that I have seen the beauties in this thread, I am in even more exicted!

.....going to start researching now!

HI:

Oh for goodness sakes--I need a ring like this too! SOOO beautiful! Would match my emeralds...need ring....want ring....

cheers--Sharon

Whoop! It looks fabulous on you! What a find. Congratulations and happy St. Pat''s to you too.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!!!! That ring is amazing, look at that emerald it''s perfection to say the very least. You are one lucky lady. Love the setting, the baguettes down the sides. Are the side stones asschers?? If they are I''m just about to die!! Kidding

Hi, Kayleigh..

No, they''re described in the GIA rpts as: "Square Step-cut" which NR said were sort of rare. They seem to have fewer facets than a traditional EC, and have shallower crowns and look sort of "flat-topped". Plenty sparkly, though!

There is some confusion here...I have an asscher I inherited from my mother. It''s report calls it an "EC". I know another person (from the "other channel"
1.gif
) who has an asscher whose report calls it a "Square Step-cut". Go figure.. Maybe one of the diamond nuts can help straighten this out.

Here''s the GIA plot of one of the side stones:

Wow, Widget, that''s one incredible ring!!!!!!!!! It looks great! Yum!

Widget, it is so beautiful. I love the side profile, especially how low it sits and the swirly detail instead of a plain basket.

Most generic asschers are refered to as a "square emerald cut" on a GIA cert. I wonder if the "Square Step-cut" means it has more or less than the usual 58 facets?

Thanks widget!! Whatever they are they are just gorgeous!!! How long did it take you to find this ring? I know you love colored gemstones as do I. Just curious how long your hunt lasted? Enjoy your beautiful ring, it''s one of the nicest emerald rings I''ve ever seen!!

Widget - that ring is FANTASTIC! I am so very, very green with envy. It looks great on your hand too! What a beauty!

Widget that''s stunning.
Wow.

widget,
Why don''t you post this ring in the show me the ring thread so everyone will see it, just a thought!!

Oh.... my....

Widget, that ring is ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING! I don''t think I have seen a ring, online or otherwise, that has knocked my socks off like that one. You are so fortunate to have found such an exquisite piece. The emerald is perfect. The diamonds are gorgeous. The setting is incredible.

You are living my dream-- the padparadscha, the blue sapphire, the tsavorite, the tutti-frutti ring (that''s you, right?), now this emerald, and who knows what else you''ve for up your sleeve-- you are seriously the collector I aspire to be.

Anychance you''d give us a "collection shot" photo?

Wow, that is a very happy Saint Patrick''s Day!

Just wonderful Widget!!!! It looks stunning on your hand. Such a vibrant green...and I love the side squares!!!!

Color! Sparkle ! Style!

What a treasure you have in that ring!

I googled Nelson Rarities and they have some awesome stuff. I have them book marked now.

Widget...Wow!! That is really a beautiful ring! and from the 20s even...cool.

THANKS, EVERYONE! I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR NICE NICE COMMENTS!

Hest: I''m almost tempted (dare I?
1.gif
)to venture over to the Diamond Section and ask about this...I wonder if somewhere there is a list that "translates" GIA descriptions of various cuts in to more common terms...

Judging from the plot of the "S S-C", there are a lot FEWER facets than on a traditional EC. And to add to the confusion, some asschers described as ECs have notations underneath saying: "Extra additional facets not shown."

Congrats for the wonderful emerald. 'Bet you could not have found any better loose - the old ones are really better. Not to mention the rest of the ring.

About GIA"s name for the two diamonds... well, WF sold one of those lately. The generic asschers are "square emerald cut" and the "emerald cut" part means the corners are cut and there are exactly 58 facets (the eventual culet not counted). Various numbers of step facets get called "octangonal cut". I have not heard of "cut corner square" or any other combination, but who knows ? There are many odd things out there.
"Extra facets" are very small bits cut with the goal to remove inclusions or otherwise "repair" the stone after the normal facets of the shape are all in place. As a rule, these are not part of the cut model - just flukes.

I think the simple squares in your ring are thought to be a typical Deco cut. What difference could it make ? They are really wonderful anyway

Amazing emerald and stunning setting.....just BEAUTIFUL!

Widget,

Your ring is gorgeous! Congratulations on finding such a fabulous ring. I like the color of the emerald and I like the side diamonds too. Whatever they are called, they look great. The baguettes on the side are a great additional touch. The deco-style setting is nice too. I can see why there''s no way you would return this ring. I have browsed the Nelson Rarities web site before, and I missed this one. I am just curious. if you don''t mind me asking, can you bargain at web vendors, or are you expected to pay the listed price? I always try to bargain, but I have not bought from an e-vendor before. A couple of antique jewelry dealers have great stuff on their web sites, but the prices are outrageous - M S. Rau Antiques and S. J. Philiips.

Art Nouveau

Hi, Art Nouveau! THANK YOU!

I think whether or not prices are negotiable depends on the vendor. Nelson sells their pieces at 10% less than their quoted prices..and they wouldn't move from that. (Believe me, I tried!
1.gif
) The pictures on the Nelson website are really pretty bad. My ring is acturally listed in their current catalogue, and you'd never guess how fabulous it is from the picture. But they happily emailed me quite a few excellent pictures, taken from many angles, on my request.

I had a kind of weird experience with M.Rau. I called them once, regarding a piece they had listed which I was pretty sure I'd seen at an antique show, being offered by someone else for HALF of what Rau was asking.

The salesman (and that's exactly what he sounded like: a "salesman") could tell me nothing about the piece, didn't have it in front of him, and seemed only interested in sending it out to me for "inspection". I may be wrong, but I got two impressions of Rau: That they don't actually own many of the pieces they list, and that their prices are VERY negotiable..

Below is a picture of a turn-of-the-century emerald ring I was having serious palpitations over from JS Philips... I inquired about it BEFORE I'd noticed their "colored price code". Turns out they were asking over $50,000 for it!
23.gif

I lost interest in this one BEFORE I got to the negotiation stage...

PS: Regarding dealing with e-vendors...As a general rule, I think they take your interest more seriously if you TELEPHONE them with an inquiry about a piece, rather than just emailing them...

widget,
The turn of the century ring is very pretty, but I like the one you bought much better!!! I keep coming back to look at your ring, it''s just amazing!!
