Went to 2 nearby jewellers - i thought might as well take a look what they have since they have been advertising lately about 30-40% off for valentines.

i asked them for a platinum setting with sidestones...this is what they told me!

1st Jeweller:
Platinum is soft and not good for sidestone setting.... it is good only for solid band with just one solitaire diamond. i would not advise platinum with side stones.

2nd Jeweller:
I advise platinum with side stones... it is strong..better than gold for setting with side stones

what is the right thing...whom should i listen to? i like a setting & can get it in both gold & platinum...but i personally like platinum. Attaching picture of my setting again.

Platinum is great for settings with side diamonds. Not sure what the first jeweler was going on about. The craftsmanship and skill setting the side diamonds matter much more than the metal used.

thanks! i guess i would stick with platinum then. The first jeweler didn''t have anything in platinum and maybe that was the reason why she wanted me to go for gold setting. She said my daughter hates platinum...it looks so bad!

Bingo.

Platinum is fine for side stones. It''s more about workmanship than metal used. The jeweller was probably just hoping that you''d buy something from her and she didn''t have platinum in stock. It''s a bit of a stock that she didn''t either, white metals have been very popular for awhile.

Many of today''s cost conscious styles made with platinum are too delicate and too soft to really be durable. The exact same, thin ring made in a stiff white gold has a chance to hold up better. HOWEVER, if a ring is made properly and the right balance of metal is used to create a durable structure, then platinum becomes an extremely durable metal to use. You may not like the large price differential from gold, but there is no fault with platinum other than meeting certain price points by using too little metal in the ring.

Some modern designs made for gold do not translate well into platinum due to the lightness issue mentioned above. If you really want platinum, the ring needs to have enough content of metal to be stiff and strong when you are wearing it. A really good jeweler will not tell you to avoid it, but will educate you in the benefits and problems so that you can make an informed decsion.

the ring setting above is : 950 Platinum, width 4mm, Approximate weight: 5.8 grams, my ring size is 7...do u think the weight of metal used for above setting is o.k.
