I have an antique art deco platinum ring (it was my grandmothers) with a shank that has gotten very thin. The shank cracked once and was repaired, but now it looks close to cracking again. Needless to say, I need a new half shank. I just got an estimate of $750.00 at a local jewlers for a platinum half shank. I thought that sounded expensive, although I know the price of platinum is very high right now. Does that price seem right, or is it too high? Should I go somewhere else for an estimate? I don't know if I can really afford to fix it right now, but I wear the ring every day and hate to have to put it away.

p.s. - I have spent several hundred dollars over the last year on this ring. I've have had it only for a year, but since it was so old, I had to have all the prongs retipped, then I had it resized and appraised. Then I had to fix a loose center stone. It's just been one thing after the next.

we must have the same ring :)

I''d say shop around. I have a ring from the 20''s as well, which needs a new shank and prongs reset. Orginally i was quoted at 1200 for a half shank, then 800 and now i have the whole ring being fixed for $700. I think you will need to shop around a bit more. I wound up going to a jeweler that has their repair/manafacture on site, which helps save money. Also, the more you are in city, the more (at least with some where i am) you are paying for their rent.

Also, try asking the appraiser who they suggest to get the ring fixed by?
