Thinking about trading in my EC for a cushion halo....

I normally stay out of RockyTalky since I have pretty much zero knowledge about diamonds and shouldn't be giving anyone advice, but I always open the cushion halo threads anyway to see what people are saying. Anyway, how wonderfully surprising to have my ring listed as one you like! Call me childish, but there may have been squealing...

Anyway, let me know if I can show you any other pictures of the Mark Patterson setting to help you make a decision. :naughty:

Oh, and luv2sparkle - a wedding band will fit easily since there isn't a basket (I think that's the word) holding the diamond.

Thanks sillyberry!!! Yeah, Im totally in love with your ring.  I tried it on with my FSIL on Friday at Michael C Fina, and I must say, its *stunning*. I just adore it. My FSIL preferred the ERD setting because she likes the gallery on that one better rather than a cathedral-type setting.

And just a side question- was the store you purchased your setting from willing to budge on the price of the Mark Patterson? There was no room for negotiation at Michael C Fina:(, which I found disappointing.

And please, I would love to see more pics- as many as possible!!!

And thanks again for your advice, LGK!!! I totally agree with what you're saying!!! ;))

Where is a blushing emotie when you need one?!? The embarrassed one gets red faced, but looks too sad. Anyway.

For me, I found the cathedral-style setting to be what I really loved about the ring. Settings with a pave basket were a bit too much for me when I tried them on (which is kind of comical, given that we're already dealing with a 3-sided pave band...). This one is blingy but still kind of simple, which I didn't really think was possible.

We paid significantly less through Marshall Pierce in Chicago for the setting than the Michael C Fina website list price. You can DEFINITELY find it for less than their price!

If I can figure out where I put my camera, I'll use this as an excuse to go play around with pictures tomorrow!

Thanks sillberry!!! Did you get your stone from MP as well? Does MP set stones from outside vendors? MCF would, but they quoted me 5K for the setting:( I was really surprised when they basically said there was no room for negotiation.

Ohhh, cant wait for pics!!

I'm sorry that upgrade didn't scratch the right itch for you! I do believe its possible to LOVE a cut/stone but not feel like its the *one* for you. Maybe that's you & ECs. You appreciate them in theory ...but are a cushion girl at heart.

Also wanna clarify that I don't think there's anything WRONG with choosing something trendy. But because its such a polar opposite switcheroo from what you already have (and presumably loved once) -- it demands a lot of due diligence before acting. Its a vulnerable time seeing someone else close to you get your "dream ring". Still think it would be best to let those emotions settle down a bit before making any moves *yourself*. Like others have said -- what's the rush? Diamond prices aren't soaring or crashing right now.

Could you pick up a *trial* version somewhere and test something similar out on your own hand for a bit just for fun? You might only be so laser focused on this right now because of the other engagement going on right now. Good luck!!

I was just coming back in to add that MP did source my stone. I didn't ask about using an outside vendor, because I had won an engagement ring from them at an auction that I ended up returning in place of a gift certificate (it's a really long story...), so buying both from them ended up being the best bang for my buck overall since the setting price was less than the GC was worth and I could apply the extra to the stone. So I don't know the answer to your question, but Ken Lewin is who I worked with and he was great.

BUT! Overall I do not want to be an enabler, since enabling is bad, so make sure you really want to make the change before you go forth and get wild and then regret it. There, I feel better now.

Yes, I know. I am really going to take some time to think about this. Its not a decision that can be made overnight, that's for sure. In my mind Im totally hoping that if I do this I will then be 110 % satisfied for a really long time, but what if Im not and I make the wrong decision? I dont know what's going to help me decide in the end.

I guess time will tell?

I think you should follow your heart and if this is what you want to do you should do it. Only you know what's going to make you happy. I think you'll know if you listen to yourself and follow your judgment.

Edited to add, this was my 3,000th post, so I'm going to dedicate it to you, Dani. Best wishes! :))

AWWWW, thank you so much Danny!!!! I do believe in following your heart!! The only thing is that sometimes you listen to your head and not your heart (it can be confusing to know which one is feeding your desires). I think I just have to wait a while and see.
Congrats on 3k posts!!!

Thank you. :))

Don't shoot me. Cushion halos are T.R.E.N.D.Y. I predict that they will be the Ballerina rings of the future. The I-can't-believe-I-did-that rings. I squidge that they became popular after appearing on "The Bachelor". (Which seems super ick to me.) Dunno. There's something so timelessly classic about emerald cut stones. They are the OPPOSITE of cushion halos. Seriously.

ps-- yeah. i know i know about the Princess Di ring being the hottest thing blah blah w/the new Princess engagement. Again: TREND. For the last twenty years they've been totally kitch! Like eye-rolling kitchy. QVC kitchy. Anyway. Its my opinion -- and a strong one. But I vote W.A.I.T. See how much you really envy that new ring after, say, a year. I'm betting you'd be super GLAD you waited.

I couldn't agree more. But if you love a cushion halo then trend be damned.

I would kill for a 4 ct emerald. I look back at the significant rings of 20/30/40 years ago and the emerald remains both timeless and stunning. I think of it as the most elegant shape and hope to own one one day!

Rosetta- Thanks for your reply. I agree EC's are gorgeous and timeless. But (and again, this is my opinion only) I feel like you miss their beauty when they are not really large (like 3-4 cts)....So if you were me would you rather have a 2 ct EC or a 2 ct cushion in a halo??

Dani, I think you have to consider what you are aiming for.

If it's more finger coverage, no matter how you get it, then cushion halo is the answer.

If it's because you love cushions in halos period, then ditto.

But if what you really, truly want is a 3-4 ct emerald solitaire, then a cushion halo won't really, truly make you happy IMO.

I feel it's better to wait for what you really want but of course the choice is yours.

I will add though, that it would be tactful and in good grace to give your relative her moment in the limelight. But I think you are planning to do that anyway! :))

Of course I will give my FSIL time in the limelight!!! I wouldnt want to steal her thunder!!!!

I am just going to have to check out some stones and see what happens. I am just so in love with the Mark Patterson halo. So I think no matter what happens our settings will be different. I ordered a fakey cushion halo which a pp recommended, so we'll see!!!

Speaking as someone who has constant halo cushion envy, if you can swing it, then go for the change. I wanted one originally and it wasn't feasible for us at the time (finding the exact shape/size I wanted in our price range). I do love my current round halo set, especially because I have those moments to myself where I look at it and say to myself, "this thing knocks me out!" but a teensy part of me will always lust after the cushion halo, trendy or not!

LOL I bought one too from a home shopping network to wear around for pretend play! It's fun to wear =)

Thanks for your advice September!! I really appreciate it!!! Your set is STUNNING!!!!

So you would trade in the EC? Do you just prefer cushions over EC's? I guess I am just curious as to what your reasoning is (Im trying to find every excuse to justify this change, LOL!!!! :Up_to_something:

Aww thanks! Yeah, I do actually prefer cushion shapes over emerald shapes--but that's just me personally! I did see a really pretty EC setting once where it was flanked by two tapered baguettes. But still, I prefer the cushion. And also too, everyone has given you great advice! Follow your gut and your heart--which one would you really be longing for over time?

Oh my gosh, I dont know, its so hard!!!! I think I just really have to see some cushions in person to see what I prefer. The EC has such a quiet elegance- so gorgeous, but not blingy at all...Plus I just have it in a plain solitaire setting, so its a bit boring IMO. I dont know what is going to really help me make my decision...I guess I just have to play it by ear!!

Bad pics of my w-set, but you get the idea....

Wow, that was big. Here is another.

Thanks Taylor!

That's so funny you posted that particular halo setting....I was considering resetting my EC in a halo at some point, and that was the setting I was seriously considering!! I like it online, but when I see EC halo's IRL I am not as in love with them. To me, I feel the halo takes away from the beauty and simplicity of the EC. Although that Bez Ambar ring is just stunning, I always loved it.
