Thinking about upgrading

Hi all,

I am a big time lurker who needs some advice. A little over two years ago my now husband bought me a RB with the following specs:

GIA Graded
1.42ct, I color, VS2
Measurements: 7.24*7.26*4.46
Depth %: 61.5
Table %: 56
Crown angle: 34.5
Pavil angle: 41
Cutlet: very small
Girdle: thin-medium faceted (3.0%)
Cut grade: Excellent
Policy/Symm: Ex/Ex
Fluorescence: Faint

HCA Score: 1.8

It's set in a platinum setting w/ a pave band. (See attached pic.)

While I love it, I am realizing that I want something bigger with more finger coverage. I plan to take a trip into NYC to see Adam at OWD at some point to see if a warmer, antique diamond might suit my tastes. I am loving them on PS, but want to make sure I love them in real life before I start a search.

I am also considering simply getting a wider band to wear on days I am craving more finger coverage. I'd love something like this: http://www.dimendscaasi.com/english/ring/pages/engR738-DD.asp

So my questions for you guys are:

1) To fund a bigger diamond, I would have to sell my current one. Any idea on what I should expect to get for my diamond and possibly the setting? Ideally, I'd prefer to sell them together, but I know that's not always possible or practical. I ran a PS search and found a couple 1.4ish I/SI1's for around $9-10k. Is it it naive of me to think that I could get around $8k for my 1.42 I/VS2? If so, then I'll probably have to wait a bit longer before I can save the funds for a bigger diamond. I also have a great upgrade policy, but unfortunately, it's not very helpful since prices have gone up since we bought.

2) If I decide to keep my diamond, and just get a thicker band to hold me over for a while (one day I hope to have both a big band AND a big diamond :naughty: ) have you seen things similar to the Dimend Scaasi one above? I haven't had much luck finding anything else I love as much as that one in the $4-5k range.

Thanks in advance!

I have to say that I love your ring, I'm a bit biased because it looks almost identical to mine! ;) I think that a basic rule of thumb on the second hand market is 30-50% less than what it would cost new. There are others here that will be able to give you a much better idea than I can. It's a great size stone and a very nice quality, so I don't think that you would have a difficult time selling it if it was priced correctly. =)

ETA I just wanted to say that I love the band that you posted. It looks like a great size to wear as a stand alone ring as well. Do you think that it may take away from your center stone though, and actually make it look smaller instead of larger?

Thanks, Christina! I really do love my current ring. I guess I'm just suffering from DSS already. I know I shouldn't be- I haven't had it for that long!

And yes, I agree. I definitely think the bigger band would take away from my current ring. I think I would wear it alone in lieu of my current wedding set on days where I want something a little thicker/more blingy.

I currently have a smaller 2mm eternity band from Whiteflash that I think compliments my ring, but it's not as big as I'd like to stand alone. This one: http://www.whiteflash.com/wedding-bands/lotus-diamond-wedding-band-by-leon-mege-1245.htm

ETA: I also think the picture of my e-ring makes my center stone look bigger than the way I see it everyday. It's funny how that works. In my mind I think my center stone looks small, but when I see it in pictures, it looks like a nice size. It probably has something to do with all the beautiful rings I drool over on here everyday! :twirl:
