This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but thoughts?

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Woah...it just might work!

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Can you believe it? :appl: How do you think it looks?

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Oh my gosh! You should go for it. AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, before someone sees this thread and gets it. You can always return it... or have it set in something else.

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

I think it'll be great - a tint of purple and with it having almost no base colour, it'll allow the lustre to come through. If the cut is right, you'll see lovely flashes of rainbow colours, not as much as a diamond, of course, but beautiful nonetheless.

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Grab it! For that price, you can figure out what to do with it later. If it isn't as good as it looks, send it back, but if it were me, I wouldn't wait to knock that puppy right off!

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Gee, I hope you got it, because somebody did.

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

 I have learned at the feet of the masters! It was me! :appl:
Now I just hope its going to be a goodie. I don't think I've ever seen a "colorless" spinel before. So I don't know what to expect. If nothing else - I'm hoping it will be a fun "filler" for my pear until something else comes along. But I have a feeling that maybe that won't be the case. Since starting this search, I have acquired a taste for other gemstones and have purchased a few to satiate my color craving.
I know for sure this one won't end up being too brown for me

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Quick hands! Hope it's a good fit for the setting.

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

I'm glad you got it! I went to the listing before I read the rest of the posts, and I saw that it was sold.

*whew* Can't wait to see pics!!

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Oh yeah JBK!!! that's great - i'm glad you got it and not a lurker, swooping it out from under you! That will be very interesting in your setting - I hope this is "the one"! I love the very faint hint of lavender in there - that will make it stand out from the diamond melee, but still look just as sparkly as the diamonds! Awesome!!!

Can't wait to see what it looks like and how you like it in your setting

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

I like that wayyyyyyy more than recutting that brownish pink Tourmaline...just my opinion...

I was looking for a white spinel at one point, because the spectral flash is so nice in them...they are hard to find....and the ones I found were priced like they were Diamonds which they are not! lol.

Awesome!

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Thanks Chris! I can't wait to get it and see what it looks like IRL!

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Im confused though.

Are you recutting the brownish-pink oval into a pear if you keep it for that setting, or is it for something else or just to have? If you aren't recutting it for the pear, why are you recutting it? Just to improve its looks? If its going to get a complete recut, that is going to be like 4-5 hours of cutting, just keep that in mind when you are putting costs together. LOVE that stone if you recut it...

The Spinel is so interesting and different...

IF I get the oval tourmaline recut I will NOT be doing it for my pear halo. My plan is to play it by ear and see what Jerry's thoughts are once he has it in hand. I was originally considering it for the halo but now that I have it and have seen it - I do not want it for the halo.
So if I have Jerry recut it it will just be in the hopes of improving the looks. But I'm not sure if that will be possible. Please share - what (if anything) do you like about it?

Can't WAIT to get the spinel!!

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

My opinion...

I like the size...its a big one. It also looks clean, and its not a bad native cut for the size of the stone. If YOU like the color, what I would do, is see if Jerry is able to have the pavillion re-cut, to close the window and increase brilliance/sparkle in the gemstone. I would not, however, invest in a full recut of the stone (meaning, into a different shape, a different size, that sort of thing). If he does just a pavillion modification, and leaves the crown/table/girdle untouched, that will give you the most 'bang for the buck' as the stone will look a lot better, but it wont cost what a full recut would cost.

That is just my opinion though. I try to weigh how much I like the gem, what its 'value' is if I decide I want to sell it (again, this is me we are talking about), and then decide if I want to have a quick fix done to the stone, a full recut, or leave it untouched.

The thing you have with the gem is size and clarity. What you don't have with the gem is a particularly strong color. Brownish Pink isn't really 'valuable' per sae, so I'd keep investment low. What you also have going for you is the low cost of the stone, which would help offset whatever you do put into the stone as far as cutting it.

But, I realize I rationalize things differently than you do, or most do, because I always have in my head "what if I decide to sell it..." because I don't want to spend $$, end up unhappy, and not able to get my money back or most of it back via resale.

I hope this helps!!

I want first dibs on the Spinel pear if you decide you don't want it! That would go in my collection in a heartbeat!

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

I think it is going to be a lovely, fiery stone. I especially appreciate that the video or pics did not show the stone against a black background. Can't wait for pics!

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

Can't believe you found this!! Good work on grabbing it as well :))

We now wait with fingers crossed and bated breath till it's in your hot little hands. Very interested to know what you think when you get it.

Actually you don't rationalize one bit differently than I do  That is exactly what I am (almost) always thinking. In case I either end up not liking it. Or, over time, just want to sell it to move on to something else. Once in awhile I am so wooed by a piece of jewelry I purchase it knowing I'm crazy overpaying but I try and keep those times to ONLY when I'm positive I already love it.

This tourmaline is a fatty. 13 x 10 x 9 deep! I'm not sure what I'll do with it when Jerry is finished (if anything) but I can't wait to see the result!

Thanks for your thoughts and honesty on the tourmaline, I do appreciate it (as always) I love knowing that if I pose a question here - I will get real honest opinions - it makes the learning so much more fun!

I check all of Tan's stores like every day :naughty: Just in case - ya know?
Any pear he posts - I check the size on. When I saw this one I kinda liked the stone too. Looked like it would fit and thought "hmmmm.."

I don't see the "purple" in the pictures at all. But I'm assuming once I drop it into the mounting I'll be able to see it better.

After I purchased it I went looking for other examples - but I'm not really finding much. Is this an unpopular color? I don't care about its popularity (I like it!) I'm just wondering why there's not much to be found? Everyone wants blue or red spinel?

Chris - you are first in line!

I REALLY hope this will be the ONE. I'm sure you're all pretty tired of me and my pear by now too! Thank you all for your help and patience with me. You've really made the process so much more fun for me! I will post pics the minute I open the package!!! Anybody in the Northeast purchase from Tan? How long does it usually take for you to get your stones?

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

I do not think a colorless (for the most part) Spinel is popular at all in the 'market'. It is something that would only be wanted by a group like us...either collectors that appreciate its relative rarity (its not rare but compared to, say greyish-pink, etc it is), or gemstone enthusiasts that appreciate Spinel's optical properties that would be evident in a colorless or nearly colorless stone, etc. It is also nice because if you want a larger colorless stone, what are your options really for a jewelry setting lets say? You either get brilliance and dispersion (sheelite or Zircon) or you get durability-but not brilliance or dispersion with Danburite, Goshenite, Topaz. I think Sapphire can be considered brilliant but not really dispersive (correct me if I am wrong). So, the colorless Spinel presents a stone that is durable, brilliant and dispersive.

Re: This isn't the sort of pear I was looking for but though

I agree with Chris' rational on whether to recut a stone; if after cutting fees, smaller size and all, is it worth at least that much? If not, don't keep that tourmaline.

As for the spinel, I see hints of a lavender tint. It's definitely there but I like it.

LOL on this post  but yeah, it's true. Most of the time, when you post something/link to a good find goodies, it gets snatched so quickly.

Anyway, that's a cool & pretty pear spinel. RL pics please ::)

JBK did you get the pear? How did it look in hand?
