Hey guys,

First post on this forum. Been a silent reader for quite sometime researching about stuff.

Hopefully, you guys can help me decide on this diamond: AGS0010137203
The diamond was graded back in 2008, and the report doesn't have any ASET or any other light performance report images. Ran an HCA on it, and it comes out to be 0.8

Its a 'pre owned' diamond, and the seller does have the original certificate. It does state 'Performance based' on the report. Following are the specs:

The caveat is, it's a few hours of drive for me to go and check out the stone In person. Wanted to get an opinion of if it is worth the drive. It's currently set in a platinum ring, and the person is asking 9k CAD for it.

Thanks in advance.

Hard to comment since you don't know if the stone is damaged (chipped) or not.

That's true. I have not had the chance to see it in person. I guess i could ask the seller to get it evaluated from a local jeweler for any damages etc?

Actually, you need to pay to get it evaluated so you don't get a biased report. I would have the seller agree to an appraisal.
(you'd have to work out the logistics).

Who is selling this ring? My initial thought is its not selling at a big enough discount. Pre-loved settings don't sell for much above
their metal value unless they are branded or created by a master. Plus, I'm assuming this setting is 13 years old so it may not
be in style (or the style that you or your GF would like). Do you have any pictures you can post? Have you seen any pictures of
the ring?

You can get a recently graded AGS Super Ideals stone for slightly more than what they are asking (with the exception of the setting).
Do you think they are willing to come down on the price? What would make it worth your while (If the stone checks out to be in
good shape)?

I would want to see and inspect the diamond in person prior to purchase. If I weren't able to see it in person, I would expect that they'd get it re-assessed

This estimator is for new diamond pricing:

Since 1 carat and lower are the most common "bread and butter" size that is sold, then I would recommend that you start haggling like mad at the 40-50% off realm and go from there.

Even at the highest price point in 2008, a 1ct diamond would have been around at least 20% less than what it costs today, which seems to average around $9,000 today for a 1ct G VS1 GIA Triple Excellent or AGS Triple Zero.

I would say take the low range of around $7,000 and subtract 20% to find the fair private party value of it:

$7,000 - $1,400 = $5,600, then give a 15% plus or minus buffer in there = $4,760 to $6,440. Maybe apply some rounding, so $4,800 to $6,500 fair purchase range.

Given that the report is so old and would need an update, a dealer would likely be offering 25-50% value, or $2,250 to $4,500.

My mindset of approach may be a bit flawed (especially with rising demand and the recent price jump), so anyone with direct market knowledge can feel free to call out and correct me. I'm here to learn, too!

You don't need to use a theoretical pricing tool here. There are 4 fairly direct comps in the PS database, right now. These are retail new offers. These are retail-new offers that come with things like trade-in programs, credit cards, and guarantees. How much all of that is worth is up to you but that's what the private-party discount is about.

You definitely are going to want to get it back to the lab before you reset this in something new. AGS doesn't accept work from the public but they work with pretty much every jeweler or appraiser out there. Budget yourself about $400 for that. You definitely should have it inspected by a pro who is working for YOU, not them. Damage is a huge deal and a very important hurdle to clear before you buy it. A lot can happen in 13 years. Bid accordingly.

You absolutely SHOULD ask the damage question, and ask them how they came by their answer. That should be in writing before you start your drive. I wouldn't 100% believe them, but if they won't make the claim and have at least someone look at it, bid low. By the way, use a credit card.

9K CAD is only $7,200 US, so maybe not so over priced, particularly if you can negotiate the price down further.

A new setting is likely to cost you at least $1,000 so If you like the existing setting the ring is probably worth pursuing.

@prs I took into account the conversion factor when I said it wasnt selling at a big enough discount.

You can get a 1.03 G/SI1 (eye clean) Super Ideal stone with all the bells and whistles for $7200.

Exactly, which is why I agree it's overpriced. 2nd hand settings arent worth much at all. I wouldn't consider this worth looking at.
