I already posted this link in a “somebody’s gotta buy this” thread but want some expert Rocky advice. What do you guys think of this stone? I’m posting partly bc I’m hoping someone swoops in and buys it so that I don’t go bezerk and get it. I had other bling plans; this would cost even more than those but man it’s tempting me. So maybe you can point out why it’s terrible lol. Because it seems an amazing price for a big and pretty antique stone and I know peruzzis are rare. Talk me out of it! Or into it! Help!

I know. I love it too!

It's so freaking pretty IMHO. I think it's not quite what I would consider a peruzzi bc of the elongated shape, but maybe some combo between peruzzi + ACC. But I don't think the labels matter much here. It's a really lovely stone regardless of label. I would personally want to pay for a GIA cert (and make the sale contingent on some agreed upon level of color and clarity, just to make sure the price was fair). But it's something the buyer should pay for (assuming the results come back favorable.

Very good advice!

Yes the length seems unusual I’m used to seeing more square shapes. I wonder if it’s spready so maybe less fire (trying to find something to dislike :wall:)
Like this one, which sold, seems to have more facet pattern: https://www.instagram.com/p/CLVWRZehWQn/?igshid=1wp7lgl3n0svb

What do you think @missy ?

It's a pretty stone. I would not call it a Peruzzi exactly, either.

However, my thought is that this may be a stone that is cut to look old. I don't think this is an antique stone. I could be wrong, but I think it's just cut in that style.

I don't see the wear and tear on the stone that should exist for any antique piece, especially a Peruzzi, which are generally pretty scarce.

Interesting. I shall ask bc I’ve already asked to see additional pics which he said would be sent tomorrow. The caption says antique cushion but that’s also the label of the cut so good idea to ask for clarification.

I had the same thought as @elizat - either it’s newly cut to look old or it’s had a lil’ work done, and not just the “polishing the nicks out” sort of touch-up.

These aren’t Peruzzis either, but they’re adorable genuine vintage stones, and there are two of them - who doesn’t need (more) earrings?

Not trying to be a wet blanket at all, but unless it was plucked out of something that was basically never worn or has already been touched up, the girdle looks much too clean to me. The faceting is also more of a modern style antique look, that you really did not see with antique items for the most part. It's too uniform. Granted, I could be wrong, but those are just my thoughts.

Those suckers have been on my watch list forever! I’m just all about rings because I can see them.

Not at all a wet blanket. Like I said I want critique so I can be talked out of it haha. I’m getting a diamond reset and just finished and paid for a recent project and was also contemplating a colored stone so I welcome the critique. I just thought that the price seemed really good for the size of the stone and so the bargain hunter in me is tempted. Not that dropping 6K on something is always a bargain but you know that I mean.

Here's an example of what they honestly kind of should look like, unless somebody has cleaned the heck out of them. The girdle should not be pristine.

Whenever I have come across peruzzi's before, they usually are pretty rustic. unless it got plucked out of an antique piece that was rarely worn and highly protected like the center of a brooch, but even then, the uniformity is rarely there.

Another link above.

Also just for reference points regarding the faceting pattern.

This might make me an outlier, but would it be a dealbreaker if the diamond weren't antique, but instead was newly cut in an antique style? IMHO it doesn't take away from the beauty, although certainly can understand the charm of true antique stones :)

I don't think it is, as long as the person knows what they are getting! It would be unfortunate to buy on the premise that it is antique and it not be though, at least for me.

I remember quite a while back (like almost 9 years) I purchased what was sold to me by a well-known vendor as an art deco target enamel ring with an old mine cut. It definitely had an old mine cut, but the setting was a reproduction with an old stone. It had really tiny marks that were hard to decipher but they ended up tracing back to Poland in the 1980s, not France in the twenties, as I was told when I bought it. I wasn't as good with buying then and knowing what to look for on items. I was pretty upset when I learned that.

There are so many vendors that are cutting antique style stones and there are even weird random ones that pop up on James Allen or Blue Nile.

So, I think as long as something is described accurately, no big deal!

Not an outlier. I agree. Vendor did say “antique.” I’m interested to find out what vendor says about its provenance. But either way it’s a really pretty stone.

I love the old world charm but to answer your question @lovedogs it's not a deal breaker! Haha.

Do you think the vendor was also fooled?
ANd yes I've seen those pop up on BN and JA - I guess I just thought they were antiques that someone made it onto their site. So those are probably new cuts? The popularity of old cuts seems to be exploding right now, so I forsee this being more a problem going forward especially with vendors who might not be as familiar with antiques.

Gaaaaah! See? This is why IG stresses me out. Something isn't snapped up right away and I totally start to think, "Well...what's wrong with it?" Then of course, it'll sell soon enough and then I'm all, "Dammit! I should have jumped on that!"

Hahahaha I know. “Why is this still here?” Then “why didn’t I buy that?” Luckily this vendor’s stuff doesn’t go as fast as Alex or Diana’s so you usually have some time to think.

Eh, maybe, maybe not? Hard to say, so I won't speculate.

I will also come out and say I have purchased from him before and I think that he and his wife are nice people and supply a nice product at a good price point.

Really difficult to say what he knows or does not know, so I will not go there. I would just ask him what the provenance of the stone is and how he came across it.

As to stones that come up on The larger sites, it's possible that it's an antique that's been cleaned up, but more than likely most of those stones are newly cut to look old. They list so many thousands and thousands of diamonds that they end up on the website even though they are weird outliers. The way that I can tell (at least for myself) is by the condition of the stone, the girdle thickness, and the faceting. A nice point about the modern cut antique style stones is that they do not have the usually thin to very thin girdles, with all kinds of chips and nibbles that can cause headaches unless the stone is protected.

Totally makes sense! I read the listing as "antique cut" (e.g. this is cut in an antique style), but not necessarily to mean the stone itself was antique. But I might have assumed it bc the stone was so clean that it looks new haha

Hi @Mreader, OK so my first impressions. Very tinted...are you OK with that? The blue fluorescence will only "help" it appear less tinted when there is UV light present. So most of the time no effect on the color of the stone.

I love the chunkiness but the dark/off pattern on two of the facets bother me (in the video) and I would like to see how it performs IRL. If you are considering it maybe ask for additional videos to evaluate the on/off pattern more thoroughly.

Summing up my thoughts- I love the chunkiness of this stone and love the puffy crown (yummy) but would need to see it under more conditions/real life situations to better evaluate the faceting and on off pattern. Has potential. IDK if it is a Peruzzi or not. And I don't know if it is antique or not. He wrote "Absolutely amazing antique cushion cut diamond!" so if it isn't antique he should correct his wording IMO.

I see what you mean about the darkness almost like a bow tie effect that happens in ovals. The faceting on the sold one I posted seemed prettier. I’m not that color sensitive at all :) But I’ll see what the pics looks like that are supposed to be sent.

Update - confirmed as y’all said not an antique. I still think it’s a beauty but I just bought Chippy in Nov and can’t be spending $$$ on this right now (much as I’d like to). Here’s a pic on finger it’s a screenshot taken from a video so not as clear of a pic.

Aww what made you decide it was a no in the end? Instagram is dangerous like that lol.

Well like I said I splurged on my big OEC in Nov, and right now I'm working with DK to reset the diamond from my original e-ring. I would have to cancel that if I bought this. And I already feel like such a flake with him, because I told him I wanted to reset the stone in my e-ring, then I had a fit of sentimentality and got cold feet about it. Then I decided yes I do want to reset it. He's mailing me a mold now. And I was wanting a colored stone (emerald) in a simple bezel design so have been in touch with a vendor about that. I also just finished a project with Dan M (though that wasn't that expensive). I've been selling things to fund these projects and some of my items for sale are still sitting. If I got this stone, it would still be significantly more than those plans combined, and that's without even setting it. I think my husband would burn my credit cards. So for all of those reasons it kind of has to be a no. Also the middle of the stone is a bit "empty" looking (I'm probably not describing the terminology properly). I sometimes get excited about pricing alone; and 8mm stone for 6K seems good - that I become less picky about the stone itself. That was probably more than you were looking for in terms of an explanation!!!! I would love someone on the forum to get it and do something with it though so that I can see it :)

Hahaha oh no not at all. I think we all prioritise things differently. I'm not even allowed a credit card lol so that limits me a lot in what I can purchase and which vendors I can work with. It seems like you've got a fair few projects on the go, so totally understand it. And I guess there are doubts with this stone too, like its not 100% you. And it was smart getting others to critique it. :)

Now we just need to find someone to buy it, and show us lots of photos!
