Thoughts on this Merelani Mint Garnet,please!!

Oh, I didn't equate the tin foil with white gold, actually. When I did it, I couldn't actually see much of the tin foil, it was more the encasing of the stone that made the colour of it pop. So, I thought this is what might happen if the stone was bezelled or haloed. Maybe I'm using the tin foil trick wrong? People have suggested it "to see what the stone might look like set". I think stones tend to deepen/darken when set? But I'm still a newbie in that area, since I've actually only set very few of my stones. Anyway, didn't know if it would do anything to the colour of yours that you liked or didn't like, to potentially help you with your decision.

I've been really interested to see the outcome ie whether you're keeping it or returning it.

For me I think the deciding factors would be (a) could I live with the yellow and, more importantly, (b) is it expensive and will eat up my budget and stop me being able to buy a blue/green one if I find it. If it would stop me being able to buy what I really wanted ie a blue/green stone, I would send it back.

I used to settle for second best but haven't done for a while because it's a false economy. There's always a better stone waiting for you that you'll love, you just have to have patience.

LD, I have talked with several custom cutters. This is what I have found out. Over 95% of what is sold as Merelani mints are more yellow green- much more so than the gem I have. The main mine that the Merelani Mints came from closed in 2010. It is difficult now to find any rough that is not small, yellow/green and that is clean- plus it's gotten expensive. Ones that are being cut now are probably from rough obtained in 2010 or 2011. So I am not sure that I would be able to find a more bluish green Mint. As one cutter said to me- all green will have an element of yellow-especially lighter greens. His feeling was they will ALL show some element of yellow- just varying amounts.

The gem from Peter is a beautiful cut, has a lovely glow, and many times looks just blue/green. I did find one other Mint I liked- but it was MUCH larger than I wanted and waaaaay over my budget. Sooooooo, based on my research I am going to keep the mint I have. If another comes available and it's "perfect" I will find the funds for it,too. I talked with enough cutters that it looks doubtful that many "clean" mints will be available in the bluish green tint unless another mine opens up with a new find.

Awwww, that's a shame about the fact that there's no more bluish green material showing up. I do think your stone is very pretty though, and it will look stunning in a rose gold mount. I think it would look great tipped on it's side like a baseball diamond shape. Enjoy your new gem.
