Thoughts on this sapphire?

Is the tone too dark? It has a bit of green in it, but I like that.

I really love the cut and the size is perfect for what I have in mind. But since this is my first foray into colored stones, I need opinions!

Yes, it is very dark. Yes, it is very gray. That said, if you like it, then it is the right stone for you.

I am ok with the color, but I'm worried about the stone going black when it's set. It's going in an antique repo with a bezel setting.

If the bezel is very open where only the girdle is covered and the entire pavilion is exposed, you might be fine otherwise I would shy away from this one. To be fair though, did the vendor provide any hand shots?

I'm going to be honest and say that most gemstones are shot in lighting to show their colour. I suspect this stone will be very dark and when set, darker again. If this is your first purchase and you're not sure, if you have space on your credit card why not get it for a look. It's difficult to decide whether you like something from a photo if you don't buy regularly. Also, bear in mind that gemstones will look different in various lighting conditions. This stone could look lighter in some but could also appear much darker.

I think it will look blackish in a lot of lighting. But it always helps to see stones in real life also to assess whether you like the cut or shade. There's nothing like bringing a stone into all different types of lighting

Learner stones are a key part of a beginner's journey. Speaking as one beginner to another.

If this is a vendor you'd like in the future, you can also reach out to him or her to see if they have any similarly cut stones that are closer to the tone you desire.

No, I haven't asked. He has a restocking fee that I'm not really interested in paying - so I'll probably just move on. I'm not in a huge rush....

I would buy that more for the luster, than the color. If you like a nice shiny hard surface, than that is the stone. It may look something similar to a black diamond once set. I don't mean that as an insult to the stone at all. It's just very dark. However, sapphire is a very hard gem, and it takes a great polish, especially by a precision cutter, so it may look nice in a halo of white diamonds. The luster will also be emphasized by all the table facets as well, which gives interest to the stone.
