Hi Everyone-
New poster here but long time lurker. My time has finally come and my boyfriend and I are looking to design an engagement ring. Thanks to some of you lovely people I have my heart set on a big chunky OEC. We're still picking out the stone and I have decided somewhere around 3 carats as I am anti-upgrade (nothing against it at all!) and I fear shrinkage after what I see on here. ;)
Long story short, I want a nice simple solitaire and I am thinking a low set six prong Tiffany-esque crown setting. My initial thoughts were that I prefer the shank width to be 1.8-2mm and the prongs clawed. After speaking with a jeweler I admire, they suggested that due to the height of the ring, I would likely catch it often and potentially loosen the setting and maybe even lose the stone. Secondly, they recommended that I widen the shank to 2.5mm and potentially taper it to help with support.
I was just hoping for some expert opinions on their suggestions and if there is anything else I should think about as a first time setting purchaser. Are there any huge pitfalls to a solitaire like this, if anyone has had it and regretted it or chose a reset I would love to know more. Also any additional settings you think would be nice, I am happy to see! :naughty: Thanks everyone!

LJL has an OEC she got this past November just shy of 2 carats and her pave shank is 1.2mm. The thinner look would definitely make the stone look larger (not that you would need help with that at 3cts) ;))

Also, you should join LIW while you're here, since it sounds like you may be working on saving for the stone for a while ;)) ::)

My original setting was a 6 prong solitaire set fairly high. While I didn't have any issues with my shank width (I think it was around 2mm?), I caught my prongs ALL THE TIME. On my clothes, in my hair, I mean you just would not believe it. I eventually got so tired of it that I got a new setting. I don't know if that's the norm, because I have other friends who have solitaires who have no problems with "catching" at all, but it drove me crazy. It could have been low quality (it was pre PS), but that's my experience.

My 5 carat antique cushion is set in a 1.9 shank I believe. I personally don't like anything over 2mm for a shank. I have thick knuckles so it is just uncomfortable for me. Plus i just don't like the look- to me it makes rings look bulky.

My 2ct RB has claw prongs that I wear all the time I have no issues with it catching- ever on anything. I think your jewelry isn't either understanding your vision or isn't compent enough to create the ring with the quality that is needed to avoid this issues. Personally I would look around at someplace else.

Have you called Adam at OWD? He specializes in OEC/ OMC/ Antique diamonds. Another option would be Jewels by Erica Grace. Both places could source you a diamond and make the setting you are describing.

Goodluck!

EDIT: Sorry i didn't mean to come off as rude saying the jeweler you admire is incompent. I was just tryting to post in a rush :loopy:
I would check out the thread for 3 carats and over. There are many solitare settings on there that meet your exact requirements.

My OEC is 3.78ct, set in a 6 prong solitaire. It is set all the way into the prongs, but the distance between the top of my finger and the top of the table is still 10mm!! Due to the height, it does knock into things quite frequently. I'm looking to re-set it into something with an open basket so the diamond sets lower on my finger.

The shank seems to be a different matter and shouldn't have anything to do with the diamond knocking on things. My shank is 2mm and completely round. I do wish it was slightly wider on the bottom because when it gets cold, it spins. Extra weight on the bottom might help with that. If they do a taper towards the diamond (not away from, because that would defeat the purpose), it might give the illusion of a thinner band, and still provide the balance it needs.

A three carat stone is going to sit high because it is a large stone. So yes, it should be set as low as possible. But a 6 prong setting is very nice. Beverley K would be good to look at. But I would not consider a shank much less than 2mm. I'd be aiming for close to 2mm (1.8 at minimum). Just be sure you insure the ring. And if you buy an old stone with a very thin girdle, you either need to set it in a bezel or send it to have the girdle polished to be a little less thin.
